The passage of gay marriage measures last week by Spain's parliament and Canada's House of Commons carries groundbreaking implications. Although Belgium and the Netherlands previously legalized gay marriage, the populations and global influence of Canada and Spain are greater. The newer laws are also more progressive, giving gay marriage the same full legal protection and adoption rights as traditional marriage. The reasoning and demographics behind the two votes are just as significant. (L.A. Times)

Thank God the torch of freedom, justice and equality (and sanity) has been picked up by two major western nations after having been dropped by the USA in 2000. Hopefully after the 2008 elections, this dark nightmare will end and we can pick it up once again. Gary (NJ)

I read that article and sent a letter to the Times right away. They've been pretty regular on publishing them. It is a great article on the simple fact that Spain and Canada recognize that expanding this very human right isn't at the expense of anyone else. Which is THE most important point of all. Andrew Sullivan has had some great commentary and links on this subject this last week. He has an especially important point that old biases in heterosexual marriages were long ago abolished. So the oppponents are holding gay people to the OLD standards which can't apply to ANYONE. More the point, and what I said in my letter. The government can't protect individual marriages, nor can it prevent the failure of marriages and parental obligations. The least and most marginally moral among us has the option of making a choice. So how can any Constitution, state or federal be used to KEEP law abiding gay citizens from having the same for their significant others and their children when they are willing, able and fighting so hard to do so.
