This story is hard to believe. Illinois Family Institute leader Peter LaBarbera suggested that hate preacher Fred Phelps is a gay plant.
"Politically and culturally speaking, Phelps and his protesters serve as a crude caricature of pro-family traditionalists who oppose the normalization of homosexuality. Fred makes an easy target for the media and secularists who are tempted (partly by their own prejudices) to paint any opposition to 'gay rights' as hateful. For this reason, I have sometimes wondered if Phelps and his lawyerly clan are 'gay plants.'"
Yeah, I admit it. There was this aging, out of work Broadway actor I knew. He was drunk in the Bowery and depressed because he couldn't find a job. So, I picked him up off his drunken behind and said, "why don't we move you to Kansas, dress you up like a hillbilly and have you picket the funerals of gay hate crime victims." I must say, it was pretty astute of LaBarbera to solve this riddle.
The truth is, LaBarbera doesn't like Phelps because they share the exact same beliefs. They are peas in a pod. The only difference is that Phelps didn't train in Washington like LaBarbera did, and so he missed out on The Family Research Council's slick PR 101 class. Instead of hiding the far right's goals, Phelps says what they truly believe. He is a mirror for LaBarbera and he does not like what he sees.

Isn't LaBarbera the jerk who hoards porn as research?
Phelps' history and that of his family is well known, thanks to a newspaper article which was never published but is an exhibit in a Kansas lawsuit.
Its interesting that the right would speculate that someone would be willing to throw their whole life away merely to advance a religious and political agenda by claiming they had beliefs and feelings that they really didn't.
On second thought, I guess that's not surprising since its what reparative therapy winds up producing more often than not.

LaBarbra is totally off his rocker, Phelps a gay plant? Has LaBarbra ever seen a Phelps protest in his pathetic life? Apparently not. LaBarbra spends far too much time obsessing about gay sex, he needs to start spending some quality time with the wife instead of trolling around pretending to be doing "research" for his busy body phoney christian outfit. See Pam's house blend for an excellent letter that a blender wrote to LaBarbra about his pre-occupation with gay males, funny, doesn't say much about gay females though. Tim W.

Yup, he's a plant alright, but then most of the religious right are living in a vegetative state from the neck up. By the way, as we know from psychology, people who are the most homophobic are usually fighting it within themselves. If that's the case, phelps must be a total bottom, screaming drag queen at heart. Have you ever seen a pic of him? He is a closeted fag trapped in a closeted fag body! Anyway, this is the descriprion of his so called "organization" :
Americans For Truth is a pro-family group dedicated to opposing the homosexual movement. Having been largely moribund since 2002, AFT is being re-launched as an online informational resource (www.americansfortruth.com). Its founder and president, LaBarbera, also serves as executive director of the Illinois Family Institute, based outside Chicago. As a former Washington Times reporter and publisher of the Lambda Report who has spent the last 15 years investigating and researching the homosexual movement, he is one of the world’s leading experts critical of homosexual activism.
Its interesting to see just how much these antigay organizations are so interested in homosexuality, period. Ditto organized religion. Makes one wonder if there's more to this than we think. Maybe if we dug just a little deeper into it we might find out more.
I don't know that I believe it though. I am really interested in his career path. He has been associated with several money losing organizations that are owned or funded by the Rev. Sun Myung Moon. He was first a reporter for the Washington Times in Nicaragua. His insight into Iran-Contra must be amazing. Rev. Moon helped fund Oliver North with the start up cash he needed to get the ball rolling. The Washington Times helped to frame stories about the freedom fighters. Eventually LaBarbera was the sole "journalist" to predict that the Sandinistas would lose the election. LaBarbera put his finger on the long shot winner. What a victory for the USA. Moon is a right-wing crazy millionaire willing to fund all kinds of ring-wing groups, just like Melon Scafe, Coors, etc. moon is also a cult leader with his own anti-America agenda. Some years ago, Moon sent followers back to their homes and churches, to resume their lives and integrate back into society. Many former members have become active in politics and some consider themselves to be born again Christians. Some people like LaBarbera may just have a career path that couldn't have happened without the generousity of Rev. Moon. I wonder what Rev. Moon gets out of the deal. I believe Rev. Moon to be a danger to America and we must put his actions through some scrutiny.
