In an attempt to stop the political bleeding over his paltry response to Hurricane Katrina, President Bush said yesterday that he bore some responsibility for failures of the federal government.
"Katrina exposed serious problems in our response capability at all levels of government, and to the extent that the federal government didn't fully do its job right, I take responsibility," Mr. Bush said in an appearance in the East Room with President Jalal Talabani of Iraq. "I want to know what went right and what went wrong."
I think this is an important first step. But having seen his apology on television, I'm not sure Bush helped himself. First, it is pathetic that it is considered huge news that five years into his presidency he finally said he might have done something wrong. Second, I don't think I've ever seen someone more uncomfortable apologizing in my life. It didn't look sincere, and seemed as if Karl Rove had to leave his hospital bed (kidney stones) to shove Bush onto the podium with a cattle prod. If Bush was going to bother apologizing, at least he could have made it look a little less painful.

However disappointing his mea culpa, it was a good start, because this sorry president has a lot to be sorry for. If anything, it was good practice for his future apologies for huge deficits, Iraq and lying about weapons of mass destruction. Don't worry George, it will only get easier.

Yep, Bush looked like someone was pulling his teeth. What an embarrasing chimp.

Give the guy a break. You liberals have no appreciation of how hard the presidnecy is. What did you expect him to do, put on a wet suit and hand out water to those people who were too dumb to get out of New Orleans???

Wayne, it will get easier for him, he won't be in office any more.

Bart, what is so liberal about demanding responsibility? All politicians and presidents should be accountable to the people, I see nothing "liberal" in that, just common decency expected of our leaders. It took him a long time to take any responsibility if any and no doubt had to be prodded. Just for the hell of it, why do you come to this gay website or is there something you're not sharing with us? Ex-gay perhaps? Gay Republican? = oxymoron.

Bart,
Unless you have on-the-job experience in being President of the United States, how would you know how hard it is? Donning a wet suit to offer hurricane victims water would have proven that at least this guy has some sense of compassion. And as for the people who couldn't leave: Were you Johnny-on-the-spot with necessary transportation to help them evacuate? If you can't answer in the affirmative to any of the above questions, you are just another Republican clone programmed to regurgitate the current GOP talking points when somebody pushes your button.

Christopher's Partner: What I find mindblowing is that socalled gay republicans (log cabin voters) go on voting these clowns into office knowing that their leaders don't want them to enjoy full inclusion in civil rights to begin with. Something is very wrong with these people. Maybe after all they're not self-loathing or self absorbed in the preservation of their wealth, positions and jobs and the nice tax breaks that you and I never enjoy, but maybe instead they are indeed truly sick. It doesn't add up.

Bush taking responsibility?
Big whoo.
I want to see ACCOUNTABILITY!!!
He didn't FIRE Mike Brown, he let him resign.
He didn't fire George Tenet, he gave him a MEDAL!

Bush's loyal to his FRIENDS, NOT the COUNTRY!!
And it's the COUNTRY that matters!
Bush's continued policies, cronyism and lack of action with the bigger issues that concern all of us, has cost THOUSANDS of lives and TRILLIONS of dollars.
I want accoutability.
Like his butt impeached for this treason!

Right-on Regan. Bush is so thin-skinned and has such a weak ego that he is incapable of apologizing nor accepting any criticism, ever!
The fact that during the campaign ONLY his supporters were allowed at his rallies, and any press person who ever asked him a challenging question was forever marginalized, should have been a major red flag. His behavior is so unamerican, and his character so totally unfit to be president; yet half the people in this country were either blinded by fear or just too damn stupid enough to vote this shmuck back into office.
Have you all noticed that during the campaign, whenever Kerry got ahead in the polls, suddenly the terror alert color level always went up. After the election, we NEVER hear anymore about it!
As Bill Maher said, "the election was won on fears, smears and queers"!

Apology? What apology. That is called being shamed into speaking, and not really wanting to.

BArt, one thing is true, he is dumb no matter what. Period

Apology? he sounded like he was being fucked with jalapeno pepers!

Look, name one thing Clinton apologized for. I heard no "I'm sorry for ruining the reputation of the most prestigious position of power in the modern world." I heard no "I apologize for being unfaithful to my wife". It is called POLITICAL SUICIDE to say that you made a mistake. We, the people, have made it that way by jumping all over everything someone does wrong in office. So I say that instead of looking for someone to blame...and Bush is NOT that person...get the hell down to New Orleans yourself and lend a hand like I am doing. You people piss me off. Get your head out of your butt and stop following the crowd.
