On Tuesday afternoon, I debated "ex-gay" Richard Cohen on a New Jersey Cable station. For those who don't know, I have long exposed the unlicensed Cohen as a quack and revealed to the public this year that he was booted from the American Counseling Association for malpractice. I also dedicate an entire chapter in my book Anything But Straight to exposing his bizarre therapy.

Following our debate, Cohen sent out a hateful prayer request via e-mail that personally attacked me. If you read the e-mail below, it can only be described as a psychological meltdown, or maybe a nervous breakdown. My friends, take a good look for yourself at the kind of unbalanced and emotionally disturbed people that offer "ex-gay" therapy.

Firstly, thank you for your incredible prayers. I am eternally grateful.

Secondly, thanks to Nancy T for her expert media coaching last night. We practiced for several hours, how to effectively articulate the message while debating Wayne Besen on today's taping of "REAL LIFE" with Mary Amoroso.

The show will air on Comcast Channel 8 (in NY, NJ, Delaware, MD, VA, DC and part of Florida-Ft. Myers area) on Friday, Oct. 7, at 6:00pm and rebroadcast on Oct. 9th at 7pm. It's a 30 minute show.

The first two segments went fine with just the host and myself. The second two segments were with Wayne and the host. I have debated Wayne on radio before. This was the first time on TV. I must say, as much as I've prepared, it is far worse facing him. The main reason is this: He has not moral integrity. He spins lie after lie, twisting the truth, and continues to metamorphize with new lies right before your eyes. So, there is no "truth" or base to dialgoue with such an immoral person. He has no conscience. I have debated many "gay activists" and we agreed to disagree, there was a level of maturity and respect. With Wayne, there is no respect, only abuse, slander and lie after lie. He's an expert in deception.

MY SOS CALL RIGHT NOW IS THIS: WOULD YOU PLEASE PRAY FOR MY FAMILY AND MYSELF. I FEEL OVERWHELMED BY THE PRESENCE OF EVIL WITHIN AND AROUND ME. It's hard to ask you for this, I feel a bit selfish, but it's imperative, and this is war!

This kind of spiritual oppression has occured before, when confronting national leaders of the homosexual movement. I know they pray for my/our demise, anyone facing and confronting them with the truth in love. I know they want me/us out of the way. We threaten to dismantle the whole building by exposing their lies ("Born gay and cannot change." By-the-way, I kept repeating and repeating on the show today, "No one is born with SSA and change is possible." AH, HA, that's why Wayne got more and more nasty - the fraud was being exposed and he wouldn't hear of it).

Wayne used to work for the Human Rights Campaign, the PAC (Political Action Committee) of the homosexual movement. They have a 24 million dollar annual budget to influence federal, state and local legislation. Wayne's mission was to take down the Ex-Homosexual movement, hence his book, "Anything But Straight." Then he had a talk show on Sirius Satellite Radio, but was fired. Now, he travels the country, promoting his book and spreading slander and lies about the wonderful potential of healing homosexuality. HE HAS NO STATED JOB AT THIS TIME. So, someone or some organization is funding him to do this work - so he can spend full time on countering our healing homosexuality movement.

Right now, it feels like I can't breath. THEREFORE, WOULD YOU PLEASE PRAY FOR PROTECTION. There is great spiritual warfare happening, and I really need your loving prayers to surround myself and my family. I'm not saying this to be selfish. I'm asking this so I might continue to battle, stand up and crack this puppy wide open.

Coming back home on the train, I cried as I prayed and I promised God that I will not rest until I figure out how to deck this immoral, paper tiger. That is my commitment.

Nancy and I shared (she's a professional PR woman) that we will work until we find the code to break him down. This is war, and we shall win for God, and to help ANYONE and EVERYONE know the truth - There is no such thing as a "homosexual," only someone with SSA, and SSA can be healed! Amen and Amen.

And, as difficult as it was, I KNOW THAT THOSE WHO WATCH THE SHOW, WHO ARE SEEKING HELP, WILL SEE THE TRUTH AND FIND HOPE FOR HEALING HOMOSEXUALITY.

Howard Stern was silly puddy compared to this wounded soul. Pray for Wayne Besen to be broken and restored in God's image. He is lost, wounded, bitter, with such an ugly spirit. He needs our loving prayers...

I want to clarify a couple of key points. Yes, my show was cancelled on Sirius in 2003. Nearly everyone in the entertainment business deals with this at one time or another. Ever hear of Connie Chung and Phil Donahue? They also had shows cancelled. I have spent the summer working on a fiction novel. No group is funding my ongoing work exposing the "ex-gay" myth. Everything I do to make quacks like Cohen breakdown and weep on trains comes out of my own pocket. PLEASE CONSIDER MAKING A DONATION TODAY, so I can continue unmasking these charlatans.

Finally, this is not a "war", as Cohen suggests, between he and I. This isn't about Cohen's big and fragile ego. This is about defeating a hypocritical "ex-gay" movement steeped in anti-gay politics. Cohen and others of his ilk claim that they love gay people. Yet, out of the other side of their mouths, they say that we are bad, immoral and sick. Through persecution and guilt, they are destroying lives. If this is a war, it is about equal rights and freedom, not petty personalities on the far right fringe. Sometimes I think people like Cohen ask "What Would Jesus Do?", so they can turn around and do the exact opposite. His weird and venomous prayer alone, proves this.

After reading Cohen's born again banter on his abuse of the christian faith and prayer, it is becoming all the more important to shut down this scam for good. Tennessee is a good start, and hopefully Cohen's little charade is next. Cohen is so obviously brainwashed by false religion, there is no hope other than years of psychiatric care to undo the damage. Wayne, keep up the pressure on these con-artists, if I ever see an ex-gay wanting to debate in my area, I will say bring it on pal. Tim W.

You can almost feel sorry for this pathetic loser until you remember all the damage he does to other gullible gay people.
I also noticed that whenever these "christians" get angry or thwarted, the first thing they want their sheeple to do is pray for the *destruction* of their perceived enemy. Real spiritual enlightenment there!

Hey Wayne, you should be proud of yourself! What I can read in this guy's letter is a great deal of personal anger because is the truth the only one that hurts. Maybe he preffer to "agree to disagree" or to feel that other people (like Stern) are just clowns, but he really feels treatened by you, because he knows that you are not a clown and that you are seriously commited to the cause. Fired or not, I personally wish you were well financed by a grant called "take down the liars" but I am sure this is not the case.

You and your work are very valuable, this pseudo Christian clowns have to be unmasked, and you have taken upon you the work that many in the community should be doing. I keep you in my prayers, so you can find the strnght to continue defeting this evil doers.

After visiting you for a nice lunch and coffee prior to writing your article about Ellen on Monday, I had to chuckle when I read Cohen's words. I know that you work hard and that no group is providing you with this mass of money to keep "fighting ex-gays."

It sounds like maybe Cohen is getting close to the breakdown that I had while espousing "ex-gay" lies that finally helped pull me into reality. As a born again gay Christian I will pray that Cohen accepts God as God really made Cohen. As a Christian, I know that you(Wayne Besen) and I have a balanced, healthy, and respectful friendship even though our beliefs on some things are quite different. I respect you as a Jewish man and you respect the fact that I do not push my vibrant Christian faith upon you personally. You are very straightforward in your comments, and I think that is what threatens wounded people that often lead "ex-gay" programs.

If, as Mr. Cohen suggests, Wayne spun "lie after lie", that would have been a perfect opportunity for Cohen to score real points in the debate by rebutting those lies with facts. But, of course, Cohen could not expose Wayne's "lies" because they were not really lies. Most likely, they were facts that Cohen couldn't deal with. I eagerly await the opportunity to view this television program.

Cohen was clearly deeply threatened by Wayne on the show.

One only feels this level of threat and emotional turmoil when faced with a truth that they are not willing, able, or ready to face.

I'm nowhere in the viewing area for this show - I'm in the southwest. Will there be a transcript of the show that I could look at later?
Now - imo, if Cohen's sentiments in that letter are genuine, then he is having classic symptoms of a panic attack (crying, can't breathe, sense of surrounding evil). I would agree with the others that the panic is precipitated by his frantic avoidance of his inner reality. Yikes! For a man in his position, someone as outspoken and aggressive as Wayne would certainly be a scary opponent. Well, as a non-Christian, I will do the shocking thing this evening, and PRAY for this Cohen dude, and also for Wayne. How's that?
And someone please lemme know if there will be a transcript of the show, or if it might air out west!

Dear God,

Please allow Richard Cohen to come to terms with himself and face the demons that are hounding him. Please open his eyes and allow him to see who he is truly fighting.

Please show him if the path he is on is not Your will, and allow him to change his ways. Please protect him, his family and the people who buy his services from harm.

Thanks for all you do Wayne.

Cohen breaks my heart. I really feel for him. Some of the crap these people dish out is so vile it makes me want to respond with crushing, destructive force. But I really can't imagine interacting with Cohen and not having compassion for him.

I have to remember that he isn't the source of the unloving, idiotic hate... the source is the lack of truth. The lack of truth in interpreting what the Bible says. The lack of truth in "their" statements that what they are doing/believing is loving. The lack of truth being taught from our pulpits and being championed by our government.

Truth must begin to shine brighter. Only the light of truth will dispel the fear, the hatred & the hurt in these ugly, unloving, unchristian beliefs.

I just had a 2 hour conversation with my very conservative mother last night. She brought up Sodom & Gomorrah. I responded very clearly with information about a parallel story in Judges 19. I showed her how both stories have absolutely nothing to homosexuality, and that the cities were condemned for their barbaric lack of hospitality.

I could "hear" truth beginning to crack through the walls of her "this is just what I believe because I believe the Bible and God's word doesn't change" defense.

Listen, I just want you to know I'm praying for you. Not for your
destruction, but for your peace. Not for your downfall, but for your freedom. I know you're going through a hard time right now and while I do disagree with your message, my heart is heavy for you... I'm concerned for you.

Just remember "perfect love casts out fear." If you're getting a
message of fear and condemnation from the fundamentalist crowd, it isn't love and it isn't of God. I pray that you will begin to have compassion on those who would demonize you, instead of being afraid & being controlled by them. I pray that you will have compassion and mercy for yourself... that you will see yourself as God does... perfect, whole & complete... just as you were created.

Don't feel guilty for the mistakes you made and the people you have
hurt. Acknowledge what you've done... do whatever you can to make things right... and recommitt to be someone that walks in love & integrity. That's all you have to do. You have to trust God to mend their hearts... you can't do it.

Hi all. I'm doing similar activity as Mr. Cohen in Europe. Some opinion here was: Shot Cohen down. You can do so. Some of your community members already attacked my pro-family webpage. Anyway. I don't see Richard Cohen's letter as hateful at all. Yes, he does believe you don't tell the truth and since I don't know either of you I don't know who to believe. The fact that you refer to him as a quack is hardly a nice thing to say and could be seen as an attack as well.

Your response to him seemed reasonable to me until I got to the part where you asked for donations. You know the tricks of the trade don't you? Tell your constituency you are being attacked then ask for money to support the cause. It appears to have worked. The only thing Cohen asked for was prayer.

Cohen is only trying to give a person hope and a choice to leave the lifestyle if they want too, you on the other hand are telling them that there is no sense in trying because they are stuck in this lifestyle forever, there is no way out! To me you are the one that is being unreasonable, and for a Christian who believes in the Spiritual world his prayer and his weeping for your soul is very Biblical and commendable.

Jabez, I would like to make you aware of a factual error in your post: being a gay human being is not a lifestyle, nor is it something that is so trivial that one chooses it or can change it. It is an innate characteristic that is completely unchangeable, as are all other forms of sexual attraction. Persons like Cohen are delusional and have been brainwashed and brainwash others through an interpretation of religion and the bible that is factually incorrect and hypocritical. Many sections of the book are routinely ignored by people callng themselves christians .

jabez, No one is an ex-homosexual. Ex-gay therapy has NOT been proven to work. In fact the only thing that has been proven is that the people involved are more likely to get depressed and suicidal when inevitably it does fail. The fact that many here were once ex-gays, and are no longer proves that it doesn't work, no professional organization approves of its use. And they even warn of the potential dangers of that dangerous and deadly therapy. Whether or not someone has sex with the same sex as themselves or not will NEVER change the fact that they are still gay. Heck I am a virgin, that is right I have never had sex with guys or girls and I still consider myself gay. I know that I don't have to have sex with a guy to know that I'm into guys. Those are the real facts, not your psuedo-science of ex-gay therapy.

Adam, the christian right have developed an arrogance since becoming "mainstream" through the 2004 elections, that has increased the severity of their attacks on gays. When I read these "facts" produced by these blasphemous fools, one word comes to mind: slander. Maybe persons who visit this website, such as MC or various people going under anonymous, should acquaint themselves with the type of religion that is out there. It is certainly not the type of religion that their alleged god would approve of, it is entirely man-made with a political agenda attached to it. BC I am a virgin because I believe as a christian that god doesn't want me to have sex with a person unless I am in love with them. Probably for some gay guys that is unacceptable but that is o.k. I wouldn't want to date that kind of person anyway. Oh and by the way before I came out and did my investigating, I too believed what these fundamentalists who come on here do. That gays are evil, perverted, selfish, self-centered. But by investigating both sides of the matter, I discovered who is telling the truth and who is lying. And believe me about those quotes all you have to to is google anti-gay religious hate speech, and you will find an unbelievable amount of info.

I find this article post a little pathetic... this email was obviously private, and paints Wayne Besen in a negative light. Big deal. I love to read Wayne's private emails about ex-gays and see what parts of his unconscious he's projecting. As for a 'meltdown', WRITING IN CAPITALS DOES NOT EQUAL MELTDOWN. IT JUST MEANS HE'S BEING EMPHATIC. Believing in evil and sin? Well, considering that Richard's a follower of the Christian faith. this doesn't surprise me. So being a person of faith and writing in capitals equals meltdown? Give me a break.

The striking thing about all major figures in the current reparative tx movement is that they baldly repeat the skewed thinking that keeps their negative prejudices & stereotypes alive.

The underlying ideas are just the same old folks beliefs, such as you have to have been seduced/molested in childhood to feel same sex attractions, being gender-non-conforming in childhood is a defect which will eventually cause that other defect, a queer sexual orientation, and of course, almost anything troublesome could contribute to later being gay. The cure for all these deficits is equally compatible with folk psychology, in that you have healing experiences of just being a regular guy.

We have no careful study which suggests that any of these things are causes/effects in the simplistic ways that reparative tx models claim. All it takes to raise core questions about this model is when you find somebody who sustained one or more of the alleged causes, without it affecting their being straight. Or when you find an LGBTQ person who just happened to miss out on one of the lists of the alleged childhood causes, yet still feels like their rainbow selves anyway.

The key empirical issues here, besides the fact that reparative tx dresses up the same old negative prejudices in new (and old) vocabularies - involves sampling bias, and of course, the culture wars. Sampling bias distorts empirical knowledge by only permitting us to draw inferences from one particular group of people - in this case, ex-gay patients - which results are supposed to apply to larger, entire populations. Older studies of LGBTQ people, usually majoring in males who sought therapy for various problems, obtained data which fatally confounded the problems for which they sought tx and their sexual orientations. Reparative tx only continues this unfortunate trend.

If reparative tx were not involved in the culture wars, it actually would only affect the smaller number of people involved in it as healers and patients. Then it might still do damage, but at least it would not be enlisted to attack even larger populations of LGBTQ citizens.

Sadly, just as the so-called Intelligent Design/Creationism movements have to first misrepresent Darwin's Theory and evolution as empirical topics, so that they can propose a solution (which just happens to be consistent with a certain sort of modern conservative religion); so, too, the reparative tx movements have to first restate all the old mis-connected arguments so that the cure can be offered.

In their more florid versions, reparative tx claims that almost anything bad or troublesome can help cause a queer sexual orientation; and further, that once you have a queer sexual orientation, you are doomed to all manner of trouble and unhappiness. If or when that fails to work out that way, then culture war forces must be brought to bear. If this model is simply empirically true, who needs all the extra force to enforce it? Dig just a little bit beneath the neutral-sounding psych vocabularies of reparative tx and you will almost always find religion, not science. The more honest among these groups start out by admitting that theirs is mainly a religious tx, aimed at ensuring that people can conform to heterosexual religious ideals.
