An Associated Press story says that Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers went on record favoring equal civil rights for gays when she ran for Dallas city council, and she said the city had a responsibility to pay for AIDS education and patient services.

However, she also was in favor of keeping a Texas sodomy law on the books that could have put gay people in prison for consensual sex in the privacy of their own bedrooms. She held this barbaric view in 1989 and it is possible that she has evolved, as did the Supreme Court when they overturned sodomy laws in 2003.

There are a lot of mix signals with Miers' limited record. Stay tuned....

I'm extremely troubled by Miers views on overturning Texas' sodomy law.

Had she been on the High Court when the case was heard leading to it being overturned, would the outcome been different?

Harriet Miers is a troubling choice for the SCOTUS and the wrong choice, in my view.

I am not sure if a candidate in Dallas could have publicly called for the repeal of the sodomy law in 1989 (and had a chance of still winning).

Was her motivation political, or did she really believe in the law at that time? The fact that she showed up for the forum is a very good thing. A Scalia would not have been within one-hundred miles of the place.

Quite frankly, she seems like another O'Connor to me. We shall see. But we can celebrate the fact that certain people who were on the Bush list were NOT chosen.

Plus, Democrat Harry Reid suggested Miers to Bush. This is very interesting. I am happy that she isn't a Scalia. I think that is something that we do know.
