The John Roberts Court will hear its first high-profile arguments today, when the justices take up a case involving doctor-assisted suicide. Oregon law allows terminally ill people to take lethal drugs to end their lives. But the Bush administration has tried to override this law by threatening to prosecute doctors involved in such cases. The Supreme Court should make it clear that Oregon can allow doctor-assisted suicide. (The New York Times)

I have a question for the "strict contructionalists" and the constitutional "originalists". Where exactly in the constitution does it say that the federal government can prohibit people from dying with dignity? I am very curious to see what Judge Roberts says on this case.

The right only believes in states' rights and small government when it involves their interests (making money, power, control, plundering and polluting the environment). When it comes to people's personal lives and what they do with their own bodies, they're only too eager to interfere and push their twisted religious beliefs off on the rest of us. Gary (NJ)
