Conservatives continue to attack President Bush over his choice of Harriet Miers for the Supreme Court. Presidential emissary Ed Gillespie made tensions soar when he offended a group of right wingers on Wednesday by saying that some criticism of Miers has "a whiff" of sexism and elitism.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., defended Miers and called opposition to her nomination by the extreme right a smear campaign and said Ms. Miers's critics should "just shut up for a few minutes" to let her make her case.

Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., appears to be hinting that he may not vote for Miers, even if Bush gets on his hands and knees and begs. Brownback wants to be president and his outspoken opposition is a shrewd move that will make him an early favorite with conservatives for the Republican nomination.

Although this Neo-Puritan strife ostensibly looks like a disaster for Bush, I believe it may actually help him. Bush is at his most popular and effective when he is viewed as a compassionate conservative. However, he has marched to the right for quite some time and lost the support of many mainstream Americans. By having his nutty right flank attack him, it positions Bush closer to the mainstream. In other words, these loons are accomplishing the almost impossible task of making Bush appear reasonable and in the center of the political spectrum.

If conservatives don't fall into line, there is a chance, albeit small, that her nomination could go down in flames.

This canabalization is the eventual outcome any group that has been totally corrupted by too much power. They're acting like a bunch of spoiled brats who havent had the word 'no' said to them since 2001.
