Ex-Gay Watch has uncovered a newsletter from the "ex-gay" group Exodus International where it appears their leader, Alan Chambers, has gone nuts. He offers a paranoid vision of an imaginary world where he is persecuted by gay agents of Satan.
"Can you imagine a world where ministries like Exodus International were illegal? There is a move not only to silence the voices of the redeemed but to eliminate the redemption. At the core of it all, this isn't a battle about whether homosexuality is right or wrong, it is a battle between good and evil. One of the many evils this world has to offer is the sin of homosexuality. Satan, the enemy is using people to further his agenda to destroy the Kingdom of God and as many souls as he can. Our job is simple: wage war against the Kingdom of Darkness and save souls."
Would someone get Chambers a good shrink. He sounds increasingly desperate and grasping at supernatural straws. There once was a time where he was a reasonable guy who truly seemed compassionate. But now, he has abandoned tolerance and embraced the raw, unadulterated hatred of the religious right. His enemies are no longer human beings, but pawns of Satan and part of the Kingdom of Darkness (how Star Wars). While we are just going about our private lives, Chambers wants to wage war.
I'm sorry, but this clown has become a nutjob. He's about two newsletters away from a butterfly net and a time share in Belleview Mental Hospital.

Terrorists are roaming the entire world, blowing up weddings, marketplaces and children in school or while they receive sweets from our soldiers.
Tourism is in serious jeopardy in foreign lands and global economic co dependency is dangerous.
And here at home, gang members kill innocents randomly with at least the same casual regularity as the loss of our troops in combat elsewhere.
Yet, judges and legislatures, the vox populi and our President can rally the nation against gay men and women and their children effectively enough to ban them from LEGAL and SOCIALLY SUPPORTIVE activity taken for granted everywhere in the world.
Terrorists thrive, and gays and lesbians are treated worse than they are.
Sometimes....I really, really despair at the wasteful folly that is life.

I have a theory for an explanation. Or two theories.
First: Chambers is only reflecting the toughening language of religious right. After successful campaigns against gay marriages in several states they can now drop even the pretense of "protecting marriage" and "loving the sinner". After all James Dobson pays his bills...
Second: What if he is not talking about gays in general at all? What if he is actually talking to himself. That he personally has to win the "satan within" i.e. he is finally realizing that no change has never happened and most likely will never happen. That this is about him finally facing the fact that he is gay. And that must make him very anxious, after all his whole identity (not to talk about his livelihood) is based on a lie. How to come out as a gay man after all he's done.

Dehumanizing and demonizing people is always the first step to annilating them. Nov 9th was the anniversary of Kristalnacht, the opening salvo of the holocaust, how little the world and 'christians' in particular have learned since then. Gary (NJ)

Chambers' rant is an indication of exactly how crazy the religious right is.
They ignore scientific fact about the biological nature of sexual orientation. They demonize people for something that is none of their damn business.
I think religious fundamentalism often takes on the markings of mental illness.
It is 2005 - and we know much more about the scientific nature of things than was known thousands of years ago when the bible was written. If these fundamentalists continue to deny what we as a society have come to know then they are headed straight for the nut house.
