The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention has released new information that shows 157,252 people were diagnosed with HIV between 2001-2004 in the 33 states that conduct name-based reporting. The report was also published in the CDC’s Morbidity & Mortality Weekly Report.
Gay and bisexual men continue to account for the largest number of new HIV diagnoses, making up 44 percent of the new infections reported in 33 reporting states.
Okay boys, it is time for me to preach. If you are having sex, how difficult is it to slap on a bag? We've known how HIV is transmitted for twenty years, so there really is no excuse. If you are having "bareback" sex (or is it suicide) with strangers you are a stupid idiot. If you are using crystal meth and having unprotected intercourse, you are doubly stupid.
Respect yourself. Respect your partner. No excuses. Period.

I work in HIV non-profit and I agree with Wayne's remarks: gentlemen, if you play, wear a condom!
The so-called "barebacking" school of behavior celebrated by people like rightwing columnist Andrew Sullivan, is an unacceptabled risk.
I just wants to add one more comment. We're seeing large numbers of black and Hispanic straight women newly diagnosed HIV-positive.
Long story short: the epidemic isn't over, and yes there are great drugs to control the virus, but there's still no cure. .

One of the reasons I stopped giving to Gay Men's Health Crisis center is because they preach "safe sex", then host WHITE parties. The gay community's hypocritical approach is not only fueling the stereotypes the Right broadcasts about us, it's also still KILLING us. As for Andrew Sullivan, he should be removed from the Web, the airwaves, etc., due to his irresponsible promotion of "barebacking". What's he get instead? Financial backing from TIME MAGAZINE for his blog. Why? Because Time Warner et al WANT US DEAD - and they LOVE the fact that we're killing each other.

You say that Andrew Sullivan "should be removed from the Web, the airwaves, etc.," because of his opinions? Ever hear of free speech? And who is going to do the removing? You? The government? Don't be so quick to think you have the right to quiet the voices of others with whom you disagree! I am disgusted.

The sudden increase in HIV transmission in the gay community only adds fuel to the fires of right wing nazis. The bottom line is, they still think HIV/AIDS is a gay disease. With this increase in transmission, it will only enforce the stereotyping. How can anyone be sympathetic to someone who deliberately engages in unprotected sex, let alone glorify it? We've become our own worst enemy. Until the few who ignore the warnings refrain from such suicidal behavior, it will make our demands for full civil rights that much harder to obtain. It plays right into the hands of conservatives and society as a whole.
Unfortunately the younger gay generation doesn't remember the horror of their friends dying en masse. For those of us that do the lesson is one learned the hard way.
Lets not have to repeat the horror for the lesson to stick!
