At the Creating Change conference in Oakland, NGLTF Executive Director Matt Foreman delivered a strong speech and was on the mark with just about everything. It is worth reading.
"We need to stop seeing and talking about this wave of constitutional amendments that are anti-marriage, anti-any-form-of-relationship-whatsoever as political contests that we ought to be winning if only we did something better.
When you boil it all down, these amendments are about inviting the public to vote on whether they deem us as good as they are, whether our love and our families are worthy of respect; put simply, whether we are fully human."
He also makes a strong case that we need to hold the Democrats more accountable and that we should approach anti-marriage ballot measures as educational opportunities for the long-haul. This is a wise approach that will lead to successful and enduring results.

Accountability on the part of democrats and republicans alike evades the American political system, unlike their European counterparts. For one thing, we have no tradition of a vote of no confidence to boot the bastards out. I blame the electorate.
Forgive me for my ignorance of US law, but are these amendments reversible when they are one day deemed to be an inresponsible flagrant abuse of a minority, or is this "permanent"?

It depends on the state. Each state has a Constitutional process. Some are easy to overturn. Others are very difficult.

Quote from Matt Foreman: "we are not going to make many inroads unless we advance as a united secular and religious community"
I have been arguing this very same thing on another forum, but they just can't seem to get beyond their dislike of all religious groups, when a huge majority of them are on our side. If we can get this group of gays on the same page with the religious groups fighting for us we might be able to overcome a lot of the Religious Right tryanny. It doesn't matter if they're believers or not, and it's not a question of making them go to church, it's the volume of people we can assemble together for a common cause.
