With 35 percent of the precincts reporting, 57 percent had voted against the measure, with 43 percent in favor of it. Twice before, in 1998 and in 2000, voters rejected similar nondiscrimination laws by narrow margins. Maine is the 17th state to ban discrimination on the basis of sexualorientation and the 7th to protect transgender people fromdiscrimination.

"Today's win proves that dogged, grassroots organizing can overcome the lies and smears of anti-gay zealots and the profound unfairness of having minority rights put up for apopular vote," said Matt Foreman, executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.
Matt is correct. This is a much needed victory because it shows that if we keep fighting, we will ulitmately win. New England is now a discrimination-free zone and for this we should be very proud. Maine is also a very beautiful state. Reward the voters with a nice Maine vacation - when it gets warmer.

Its very disturbing to think that 18 states ban same sex marriage, let alone civil unions. With more than a quarter of the states against our rights, same-sex marriage rights at the federal level are all but dead in the water for any forseeable time. So our fellow gays in Massachusetts will continue to live in marital limbo. What a disgrace for our country. We've relinquished our leadership on civil rights for sure. A sad day.

I am probably not the first to make this observation, but for the immediate future, we should expect to see a 'free state/slave state' dichotomy.

Our victory will come much later and after much social upheaval, but there will be places that we will be able to live in relative freedon as well as places it will be hell.

I am a gay Jesuit priest and, while I generally discourage vitriolic statements towards gays, I do recognize, through years of intense therapy by the church, that it is a curable illness. It is not terminal. While the "Love In Action" people are wrong to say that gay men can be made "straight," I can tell you that there is a way, over time, to control these sinful urges. I will always be gay, but I now have more control over the disease and I no longer feel trapped by an inner demon. But I do agree with the decision in Maine, there generally should be no discrimination or violence against gays. But for those of you that seek help, or feel like you have lost control, trust me there is a way out. Just hold on.

I don't believe Fr. Etkin is who he says he is, do you? FYI Etkin: being gay is not a disease or an illness. I can't imagine any Jesuit, supposedly the intellectuals of the church would ever make such a judgmental statement. Nobody taught me to be gay and my upbringing was as heterosexual as any other, two loving parents, neither one more domineering than the other. Being gay is as natural as being heterosexual. Why don't you take care of your hetero parishioners for a change and admonish them that they too may be suffering from a disease or illness simply because they violate church teaching by having sex before marriage, or use condoms, both mortal sins in your church. What about your hetero clergy who philander and father children...a big problem in Latin America. Are they too suffering from a disease that the church can cure? BC...its obvious that low-lives such as Red D and Fred just can't handle the truth. If they are so comfortable with their assumed heterosexual orientation, they wouldn't be here venting their venom. We've touched a raw nerve with them and they know it. They have an overwhelming sense of inadequacy, hence their resolve to all the antigay vitriol. Its the classic manifestation of deeply rooted homosexual orientation in themselves. They can't deal with it so they lash out by coming here. They wouldn't do it on hetero websites. In a way they gain some validation by baiting us, so from now on, we should just ignore them and refrain from even responding. Its obvious they become enabled by our responses.
