Baylor University alumnus Truman Smith gave $65,000 to the Baptist college over a decade, returned to the campus every semester after graduation to lead economic case studies and raised $60,000 to endow a scholarship. The school rewarded the 1983 graduate by kicking him off of the advisory board to the business school when the dean learned he was gay.
"On one hand it doesn't surprise me, but on the other it disappoints me," said Smith."Because I'm not surprised does not make it right," he continued. "The university condoned slavery in the 1860s. That shouldn't surprise anybody, but it sure doesn't make it right either."
Very well said by Smith. He has done a lot of good for Baylor and the school ought to be ashamed of the way they treated him.

I never understand why people knowingly give money to support homophobic institutions.

This is not a surprise, that is what the Christian fundamentalists do. That is why we have to remember, give to LGBT charities rather than the fundies...

Typical "christian love" from these sanctimonious, hypocritical, hateful, ungrateful sacks of SHIT! Jesus would be the first one to read their fuckin beads too!

And I don't understand why any logical gay person would vote for and support a republican administration, knowing that it has no intention of granting equal rights to gay and lesbian citizens and by its silence, condoning right wing religious zealots for their hateful vitriol and incitement to commit acts of violence against us. It defies comprehension and common decency.

Careful! We don't want to be worse than they are and then sign it anonymous, although I understand the ingrained fear of being fully out. A couple of years or so ago, I complained that I did not like a particular attitude/action in regard to GBLT issues at the time I was reminded of my usual annual donation to the necessary funds. (I did not mind and, in fact, welcomed making such a donation as I got my education essentially free.) The man with whom I spoke limited his response to "I will mark you DO NOT SOLICIT." I'd rather he had asked me to defend the validity of my position. It is better, however. Nothing would have even been discussed in my days on campus. We have to stand up and be heard.

Oh com'on Wayne -- Yes I'm all for changing attitudes and working to get the collective religious community to soften its hard position on Gay Rights ... but I've followed this story and Truman as an alum had to know Baylor's position on Gays and Gay Rights. The Baptist, like the Roman Catholics are always abit slow to recognize change ... case in point it took the Southern Baptist Convention 150 years to appologize for its stance on Slavery ... and only 350 years for the Pope to acknowledge that the world is round.

Sorry Truman - you should've been marking your checks with Pink Triangles and Rainbows all of these years ... if they accepted your money knowing it was Pink -- then you'd have a case ... but don't act surprised ... they have always been bigots and made no bones about it. It'll be 2120 before the Southern Baptist Convention gets around to apologizing for their ill conceived notions of homosexuals and well into the 25th Century for the Roman Catholic church.

I wrote to the dean of Baylor-advising that they should give Mr. Smith his money back.

Not only is it a moral impossibility to accept money and benefit from someone you vilify, this treatment of Smith breaks the most covenant law of man:
to treat others as you'd want to be treated.

The lesson that the anti gay fail to learn is
this: there is no mistreatment or bigtory against gay people that will ever make their opinion or actions right.
All come out hypocritical, contradictory, misdirected and unsupportable by evidence.

And in the end, everyone loses.

I wrote to Mr. Smith a copy of the email to the dean and one of my support.

But the school still owes him his donation, and have to return it(and perhaps compensation for his time) he after all...gave it in good faith and they acted in bad faith.
