A senior at UMass Dartmouth was visited by federal agents two months ago, after he requested a copy of Mao Tse-Tung's tome on Communism called "The Little Red Book."
Two history professors at UMass Dartmouth, Brian Glyn Williams and Robert Pontbriand, said the student told them he requested the book through the UMass Dartmouth library's interlibrary loan program.
The student, who was completing a research paper on Communism for Professor Pontbriand's class on fascism and totalitarianism, filled out a form for the request, leaving his name, address, phone number and Social Security number. He was later visited at his parents' home in New Bedford by two agents of the Department of Homeland Security, the professors said.
Dr. Williams said he had been planning to offer a course on terrorism next semester, but is reconsidering, because it might put his students at risk.
"I shudder to think of all the students I've had monitoring al-Qaeda Web sites, what the government must think of that," he said. "Mao Tse-Tung is completely harmless."
Folks, the cold war may over, but there is a chill in the air. In our quest to defeat terrorism, we are becoming more like the oppressive societies we abhor. The Bush Administration simply can't be trusted to balance civil liberties with homeland security. Not only are they dishonest, they have little understanding of the freedom and liberty they talk so much about.

This story sent shivers down my spine!
If this is happening, and it seems to be happening with more frequency as reports are dribbling out here and there of similiar incidents ... we are in real trouble here folks.
As a librarian, I cant believe a university/college library wouldnt already have a copy of Mao's book in their collection. When we do interlibrary loans here (a public library) we only put the patron's name and phone number on the request (to call them when it comes in). I dont see why they would need to ask for the students SS number etc. It really is scary the way bush and the fascist right have turned this nation into a police state; no wonder we're having a brain-drain. The best and brightest from other countries no longer want to come here for obvious reasons. Bush's excuse for the illegal spying on citizens was that it was for "national security". What a dumb ass, using that logic why have the Bill of Rights at all if they arent going to be upheld. I'm sure the Gestapo used the same excuse. People who trade liberty for security deserve neither. (Benjamin Franklin) Gary (NJ)
