Today, Lambda Legal will file its opening brief in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia in a lawsuit on behalf of a man who was denied employment as a Foreign Service Officer by the U.S. State Department because he is HIV positive
"Lorenzo Taylor is being denied the job of his dreams, after years of preparing for it, based on a 20-year-old policy that bans every person with HIV regardless of over-all health. Given his long history of excellent health, this makes no sense," said Jonathan Givner, HIV Project Director of Lambda Legal. "The federal government needs a reality check."
Good for Lambda. This absurd policy is keeping qualified Americans from doing their jobs and helping this country. And after watching Bush's parade of cronies screw things up, America needs all of the qualified people it can get.
The government's main argument is that Taylor and others with HIV might get sick and miss work. However, with new HIV medications, this is patently absurd. People living with HIV perform any number of jobs with little or no problems. The only "complications," it seems, are coming from Condi and the state department who want to discriminate for no valid reason.

I was diagnosed with SLE (systemic lupus) nearly eight years ago. I have struggled with various ailments that were complications of the disease-but I also had long periods of health and stamina, which I fight hard to continue.
Anyone can contract cancer, MS, ALS...and still be very productive because of medical breakthroughs in pharmacological therapy. It is also great incentive to take good care of yourself, when you have a career, important things to do and people to see.
The worst possible thing that could happen, is losing a career option because of prejudice, not your lack of ability to function in that job before missed days at work has even happened.
No one is barred from a job, or should be based on 'maybe' and 'might'.
