(Weekly Column)A few years ago, I had the privilege of meeting a gay professional basketball player for the Utah Jazz. He desperately wanted to come out of the closet, but feared reprisals and career suicide. The man relayed to me the great difficulty of having an active social life in conservative Utah. As a gigantic, well-known black man in lilywhite Mormon Country, it wasn't as if could slip into a gay bar unnoticed.
There were teammates who were aware of his sexual orientation and accepted him. Still, he was forced to live a painful double life of secrecy that led to extraordinary loneliness. In essence, the Utah Jazz locker room became this man's Brokeback Mountain.
I mention this heart-wrenching story because Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller
has canceled plans to show Brokeback Mountain in his suburban Salt Lake City movie chain. Salt Lake Tribune columnist
Holly Mullen reported that Miller had told a local radio station that he had intended to show the movie.
"It's something that I have to let the market speak to some degree," Miller told the radio station KCPW-FM just hours before the theater nixed the film. "I don't think I'm qualified to be the community censor."
So, imagine the surprise of moviegoers when they reached the box office and found an offensive note taped to the ticket window: "There has been a change in booking and we will not be showing Brokeback Mountain. We apologize for any inconvenience."
It is abundantly clear that Miller pulled Brokeback as the result of a last minute right wing pressure campaign. Instead of treating viewers like adults and letting them decide whether to see the movie, he buckled to Utah's infamous neo-Puritan lobby.
"I just think (pulling the show) tells the young people, especially, that maybe there is something wrong with this show," said Gayle Ruzicka, president of the Utah Eagle Forum.
The right wing busybodies often claim that they speak for 'the people.' They position themselves as martyrs that heroically stand up to the liberal elites. However, Mullen points out that Brokeback Mountain is showing on two screens at the independent Broadway Centre Cinemas in Salt Lake City, and the theater's take for the week was 12th-highest nationwide.
It turns out the true elitists are the censors at Eagle Forum who believe they should decide what movies Utah citizens can see. Clearly, if people are allowed to make their own choices free from blue-nosed censors, they
flock to this award-winning movie.
What I find particularly disturbing is that the right wing does not give a damn about children, nor do they have even the slightest interest in upholding traditional values. They are simply anti-gay and want to see homosexuals disappear from the face of the earth.
How else do you explain the uproar over Brokeback Mountain, while the right remains silent on Miller showing at
his theatres, the grisly horror movie
Hostel? The Associated Press describes this movie as one "which follows a trio of twenty something guys on a European vacation that begins as an orgy of sex and drugs and descends into brutal, bloody sadism."
Sounds like wholesome fare.
It seems the Neo-Puritans believe that their children are threatened by a beautiful love story involving two men. Yet, they have no problem with a gory movie where an eyeball is pushed out of a woman's eye socket. It is clear that the far right offers nothing of value to real families and has a queer obsession with gay people.
If anything, these fanatical yahoos seem to glorify violence more than your average American. This helps explain why Mel Gibson's psychotic "The Passion of the Christ" was such a hit. Instead of focusing on Jesus' message of love, these pious vigilantes seem to get off on watching their savior get pureed.
Sadly, the people who most need to see Brokeback Mountain are the homophobes who often protest just a bit too much. For example, if the Reverend
Lonnie Latham had seen the gay western, it may have helped him come out and avoid an embarrassing scandal.
Last week, the Southern Baptist Convention leader was arrested in Oklahoma City for allegedly propositioning a plainclothes police officer posing as a male prostitute in a cheap motel parking lot.
During my book tour for "Anything But Straight," I had an event in Salt Lake City. I met some wonderful people and partied at a hopping nightclub overflowing with homosexuals. Indeed, it was one of the best looking crowds I had ever seen. I remember joking that it was almost an advantage for a person to be ugly, because one would be considered exotic. Even in the reddest of red states, there are out gay people and they have many allies.
The right wing can stop Brokeback Mountain in isolated theatres run by gutless owners like Larry Miller, but they can't censor reality. With the current momentum and social change fueled by such groundbreaking movies, it is only a matter of time before even a Utah Jazz basketball player can come out of the closet.
52 Comments:
As a strong Mormon, you must know that we do not accept homosexuality as natural or normal behavior. It is a Sin and we have a program, Evergreen, that can correct this disability.
I applaud the Eagle Forum for taking a strong stand against immorality and the Jazz owner should also be lauded for moral courage in the face of homosexual protests.

Wayne however is wrong in stating the conservative right is not for the rights of children. They may be inconsistent but they do support children.

Great piece, Wayne. I live in Salt Lake City and I can honestly tell you, it is one of the gayest cities in America. And filled to the brim with the very men Brokeback Mountain is about--gay men married to women. It is "our little secret" as they say, and THIS is the real reason this movie has caused such an uproar here. People don't always like a mirror being held up to them. In the theaters where Brokeback is playing here, it has ranked either 10th or 12th (depending on which account you read)in the entire nation. What does that tell you?

JD, homosexuality is abundant in the animal kingdom, therefore it IS natural and normal. Try reading a real science book instead of the mormon book of fairytales. I think it's interesting that you capitalized the word Sin! You sheisters would be out of business without it! AND, most of all, WHY are you reading this site? Methinks I smell another mormon closet case. Is your program called evergreen because of the money it generates from the poor fools dumb enough to fall for your quack bullshit!
To Wayne's column; the puritan censors will never learn that the fastest way to get people to want to see or read something is to tell them they cant! I watched the new TV show Book of Daniel only because the religious right was so pissed off about it (that and Aidan Quinn is a HUNK!). I have a friend who went to a catholic high school in the late 60s. He and a classmate would go to see EVERY movie that the church put on their 'do not see' list, just for spite. Way to go!

JD needs to go to www.fallwell.com and consult the biblical verses aimed at heterosexuals, verses that people like JD choose to omit from their belief system, yet find it advantageous to quote one or two scant verses purportedly condemning homosexuality, words not uttered by Jesus Christ I might add. I'd love to know why these self-proclaimed messengers of hate can't explain why they don't adhere to any of the quotes let alone live by them if they truly believe the bible is the word of God, but do however quote Leviticus with abandon when it comes to us. Their sole obsession with homosexuality makes one wonder.

JD, homosexuality is not one of the 7 deadly sins, however anger(violence) and gluttony are. We know from sociological research that people on the religious right have a higher preference for violent movies than the rest of us (hence the popularity of the Passion of the Christ movie) and also that they have a higher rate of obesity. Mormons dont seem to be so much a part of the pork brigade, but gluttony is rife with the southern baptist types. A SIZABLE percentage of them are fat fuckin pigs like their Fuehrer jerry falwell; his head looks like it's being squeezed out of a tube of Preparation H.

What? Now the mormons 'found' another book that say the does and dont's about homosexuality and movies? It is incredible that the mormons have not learned anything from their own history, they were treated like weirdos by fellow Christians and that is how they made it all the way to UTHA. And they have the capability to contradict and create their own moral standars and interpret the Bible the way they preffer. There are communities in that area that still condone girls having sexual relationships with all those pervs that claim that is morally right to have several wives, and the authorities don't do anything about it. You people (to J.D. and his sect) use the term morality so very loosely... and you will have to face the wrath of God for your lack of love and because of the many so called Christians, you are among the ones that have turned your back yo God, and continue preaching all that false doctrine.

Brokeback Mountain's revenue means NOTHING to Larry Miller. (yawn) It's the principle of him taking the movie off his marquee. I grant him the right to ban whatever movie he wants but he has to also understand we have the right to voice our opinions about his bigotry.
Larry is so rich this is just a piddly little smattering of $$$ for a man who can build an empire and donate $10,000,000 to cancer research and a whole campus of buildings to the local techincal college. He is not going to hurt from this...even if Brokeback Mountain turns into a major hit after its wide release and it wins an Oscar or two.
Larry would be prudent to watch out for ramifications for being a bigot. NBA officials and major sponsors of his basketball team will be hard pressed by many groups to be more "tolerant" or else.
More likely, though, this is a tempest in a teapot in the mindset of most Utahns and they will just shrug their shoulders and life goes on.
I STILL haven't seen the movie. But I will.

Unless of course those children are gay, or their parents are gay.
They only support a certain type of idealistic family that hardly ever exists. And it's true that they THINK they're doing it for the children, and they often use that as an excuse for their actions.
But that is not the same thing as actully supporting children. They do more harm than good.

The bottom line is: Homosexuality is biological.
It is determined in the hypothumulus region of the brain.
A small percentage of ALL mammals, including humans, are born gay.
It is 100% natural.
It has NOTHING to do with morality. It is the way people are born.
I think it is highly immoral to judge and stereotype and lie about someone because of an inborn characteristic.
J.D. from Utah is immoral. He has a choice as to whether or not to condemn someone for the way they are born and he has chosen to condemn. People who are gay do NOT chose to be gay.

Mormon is a nickname that was used to describe members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, based on "The Book of Mormon" an ancient record that was translated by Joseph Smith and contains a record of the people who lived in the Americas both before and after the birth of Jesus Christ. Moroni was the son of Mormon, he was the messenger who appeared to Joseph Smith and also one of the last prophets who wrote in "The Book of Mormon." Most members prefer to not be called "Mormons" because it doesn't reflect the true name of the church, which is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. LDS is an acceptable shortening that you hear as a reference, and I don't know many members who are offended by being called a "Mormon" so long as it is not used derisively or disrespectfully. Hopefully that answers Anonymous's question.

Wayne,
I'm a devout LDS white male, father of four living in Utah.
I'm not a gay basher. I believe homosexuality is a sin, but then again so is a lot of stuff a lot of people do, including me. Because I'm a sinner I shouldn't judge others. I accept gay people and attempt to love them unconditionally the same as I would any other of God's children.
I was enjoying your poke at conservative Mormon culture--we deserve it sometimes.
Until you said "Instead of focusing on Jesus' message of love, these pious vigilantes seem to get off on watching their savior get [b]pureed[b]."
You fashion yourself as an open-minded, loving gentlemen who calls for all to respect each other no matter their beliefs, and then you come out with that disgusting slur. I don't get offended that easily, but I shuttered at that. The first ammendment is a great thing, and you have the right to talk that way if you want. But you lost all respect from me on that; and I was on your side until then. You come across as an immature, angry, spiteful person who is even more intolerant than those you accuse of intolerance.

To the guy who is father of four in Utha:
No. It is unacceptable to keep silence in front of injustice. I am a openly gay man and a Christian and I simply don't go around claiming to know better than others what is sin and what is not.
We all have different sets of believes, and while we should respect other and keep quiet in front of what bother us, I think that condoning the historical treatment that we as people who love people of our same gender -and have sex with them- is morally wrong and it is unchristian to stay quiet in front of injustice... this is NOT what Jesus would do!
If you RESPECT men who love and have sex with other men, good for you! I invite you to continue doing it! but there has been an abuse of power in the name of Jesus for centuries that simply HAS TO END!
We are to fight we all we have, inside and outside of church to make sure that the interpretation of the Bible is man made. If the Bible is the word of God or not, that I don't know... but was the sabath made for men or men for the sabath? asked Jesus to his followers. I ask you the same, If the Bible is the truly the word of God, we can NOT simply make human interpretations that make some liders and other biggoted people comfortable; I was NOT created to be dominated and scorned, but to be free.
We HAVE to question the way Christianity has been kidnaped by conservaturism, before is too late.

BC Waterboy, I loved your comment and analogy. These right wing fundamentalists have no concept about equality, freedom or civil rights let alone respect them. How would they like it if we as a group pushed for an amendment to ban Mormonism, or any religion for that matter or deny them the right to marry anyone of their choice or limit the number of children they may want. They just don't get it. Ignorance is bliss for most of them, let them remain where they belong, in the darkness.

Of note, the love of my life passed away suddenly on Dec.26th without any warning of a health problem. Guess what Mormans, I feel pain and great loss just like some of you may in losing a mate.
