The governors, Republican and Democrat, are mad as hell at Bush. He has sent much of the National Guard overseas and had them return without crucial equipment. This has left the states understaffed and lacking arms.
Early this month, all 50 governors signed a letter opposing the new budget and calling on Defense Department officials to reequip returning units as quickly as possible. Much of the focus was on the gap between the Guard's authorized strength of 350,000 and the budget, which includes money for 333,000 Guard troops.
Once again, Bush speaks out of both sides of his mouth. He says he wants a strong Guard, but made cuts. But, he has now assured the governors that he will provide the funds - the problem is, no one trusts him to follow through. All one has to do is look at New Orleans to see that this administration is full of empty promises.

This is his usual modus operandi, he promises what people want to hear (like alternative fuel research in his state of the union address) and then he slashes the money for it out of the budget. He's a pathological liar from the word go. Gary (NJ)

Wow, when Bush was serving in the Air National Guard during the Vietnam War, his little candy ass was safe and sound. I'm sure he liked flying a fast, expensive government machine to impress his friends, but he was NEVER going to employ those skills in support and defense of his fellow soldiers in a real fight.
With ease, he sends the Guard to a foreign nation, while illegal alien invaders take full advantage of porous borders and lax immigration standards. Leaving us ever MORE vulnerable, not only to terrorist plots and attacks, but day to day risks by way of public health, congestion, overburdened public services and infrastructure and criminal law enforcement.
And all the while he tells US to be vigilant and sticks us with incompetent boobs from one end of government to the other. Starting at the top.
I hate people that entreat us to trust them, while all the while giving us no reason to. Indeed, to be very afraid.
