In Annapolis, (Capital of) Maryland, at a hearing on the proposed Constitutional Amendment to prohibit gay marriage, Jamie Raskin, professor of law at AU, was requested to testify and he did so.

At the conclusion of his testimony, a right-wing senator rose to say, "Mr. Raskin, my Bible says that marriage shall occur only between a man and a woman. What do you have to say about that?"

Raskin: "Senator, when you took your oath of office, you placed your hand on the Bible and swore to uphold the Constitution. You did not place your hand on the Constitution and swear to uphold the Bible."

The room erupted into applause.

Interesting, too, how the right wing so often begins such sentences with "MY Bible says...." thus giving away the fact that it's THEIR Bible and not THE Bible that says it.

It's a nice quip but it doesn't make sense to me. I mean, the people who think gay marriage should be legal - don't they have a problem with swearing on the bible? I get the part about upholding the bible and not the constitution but I guess it doesn't have that nice reversal without the swearing on business.

The ansewr is "Usually not at all." There are millions of Christian homosexuals. As such, they have no problem swearing on the bible. The only folks who would have a problem doing this are non-Christians (gay or straight).

I'm thinking that - straight or gay - the reason you swear on the Bible is that you consider it representative of a higher power. So you swear on a higher power to uphold something of lesser importance.

But then the quote is something to the effect of swearing on the constitution? I doubt, and I assume Raskin would agree, that the Senator in question holds the constitution to be a higher power.

The point is, that the senator in question *did* sear an aoth to uphold the U.S. Constitution as the law and ruling document of the nation. Thew christian Bible is neither an appendage to, referenced nor an incorporated basis in the U.S. Constitution.

If the Senator in question is choosing to claim that the Bible is a superior ruling document for civil law in the United States he is ion violation of his oath of office.
