Any tourist who has traveled a few blocks from Jamaica's gaudy tourist traps, knows that the country is a notorious crime and poverty-ridden shitbox. Indeed, the island nation has the world's highest murder rate. Much of this wanton violence is fueled by Jamaica's dance hall music scene, where mostly untalented and stoned artists warble about death, murder and other anti-social behaviors. Gay bashing, however, is what this "music" is most notorious for promoting. It has led Jamaica down a psychotic path of mob violence against gay and lesbian people. According to Time Magazine:
In the past two years, two of the island's most prominent gay activists, Brian Williamson and Steve Harvey, have been murdered and a crowd even celebrated over Williamson's mutilated body. Perhaps most disturbing, many anti-gay assaults have been acts of mob violence. In 2004, a teen was almost killed when his father learned his son was gay and invited a group to lynch the boy at his school. Months later, witnesses say, police egged on another mob that stabbed and stoned a gay man to death in Montego Bay. And this year a Kingston man, Nokia Cowan, drowned after a crowd shouting "batty boy" (a Jamaican epithet for homosexual) chased him off a pier. "Jamaica is the worst any of us has ever seen," says Rebecca Schleifer of the U.S.-based Human Rights Watch and author of a scathing report on the island's anti-gay hostility.
Anyone who visits Jamaica or buys goods from this hellhole should be ashamed and is an accomplice to this ongoing bloody witchhunt against homosexuals. I call for a total boycott of the country and international protests wherever these thugs perform this hideous music.

I've met a few Jamaicans. They are mean, nasty people and true scum. The only virtue they have are big dicks. For a homophobic culture, I've sure blown a lot of them. Unfortunately, you have to put them in the shower first because they don't like to bathe.

Remember back in the day when some Jamaican music told stories like struggling, suffering, how bad violence is (especially in Kingston suburbs of Trench Town and the extremely partisan Tivoli Gardens), working for peace, and, well, legalizing pot?
Now it's suggesting the cleansing of gay people in Jamaica in the tune of shitty dancehall music. Bob Marley and Peter Tosh must be rolling in their graves right now.
Is it me, or is every Jamaican fascist remind me of the bad guys in that Steven Seagal movie, "Marked for Death"?

We're seeing more and more homophobia and attacks on GLBT in the Caribbean as a whole. Jamaica's reputation for blatant homophobia is nothing new.
Although boycotts historically do little to change policy ... I have a laundry list of products and services and vacation destinations that I refuse to give my *pink* dollars - as a matter of principle.
Many times it has served to educate those who are not in-the-know. Case-in-point: I was stocking my bar for a party and refused to include Red Stripe beer - much to the chagrin of some of my guests - gawd knows why their like it to begin with ... but I launched into one of my *not in my house* diatribes listing the crimes of Jamaica against GLBT people. It had the effect of my friends ceasing to purchase Red Stripe and from purchasing Jamaican Rum products as a result. So sometimes its takes just spreading the word one party, one group of friends at a time.
Come Bahahk to Jamaica!? Forget it mahahn! This 'batty boy' has never been, and definately never will go to that island latrine. Je prefere l'Europe! B. Queer

Not only do I have states like Alabama and Virginia on my "Do not visit, ever, under any circumstances" list, I now have to put the entire Caribbean on it. Jamaica is not the only nation in this region to display such disugsting, virulent, murderous homophobia. They must have it horrible in Jamaica, though: here we blame gays for society's problems and try to legislate them out of existence. There they actually go the extra mile and kill them.
It's the same old same old--miserable, poor and envious people need a scapegoat; defeated and demoralized Germany in the 20s and 30s had the Jews; modern day fundamentalists and shitbox island dwellers have GLBTs.

Fascinated that those who neither live here nor have any real idea of what life is like here behave as if they have studied the history of the islands and especialy Jamaica for years. Back off. You don't get to tell us that we MUST tolerate homosexuality here. You don't get to tell us that we MUST eliminate dancehall music in order to stop it. If your information comes from Time Magazine and others who stop in Negril and Ocho Rios to do their reporting then SHUT THE HELL UP!.
I love how the highest murder rate makes us a "shitbox". And then is somehow linked to our homophobia. We have respect for human life (most of us) just little for homosexuality here.
for the record, Jamaican 'gay activists' Steve Harvey and Brian Williamson were NOT killed in 'hate' crimes.
I knew them both personally and professionally.
Brian Williamson, in addition to being the JFLAG head honcho was widely known as a PAEDOPHILE who would lure young, impoverished teenaged street boys into his house and molest them. He was stabbed over 30 times and dismembered by HIS GAY LOVER who apparently caught him earlier in the week having sex with another man.
Steve Harvey was just an unfortunate one of the 1674 people that were murdered in Jamaica last year. He was killed by a gang who were routinely abducting robbing and killing people in Kingston, and given the fact that the same gang did the same thing to several other heterosexual people, its safe to say his murder had nothing to do with the fact that he was gay.
All you so-called activists bitchin about an issue that is not a real one of concern should get your facts straight because in Jamaica the reality of gay life is not what is presented by bleeding heart American pretend-journalists that dont bother to do their research.
And by the way, keep your pink dollars. For a set of people who have been disenfranchised and persecuted, you all are mighty fast to judge to sterotype and lump a very diverse set of people into one. The world can do without bigots like you all masquerading as people who give a shit about human and civil rights. You can kindly take your pink dollars and insert then one by one up your fucked out asses, because all Jamaicans want what all other people want, to be free, to life safe, happy lives and to live with dignity. We just dont plan to bow and genuflect to people with values not consistent with our own just because they have money.

hmmm.Although I have to admit we Jamaicans are a homophobic soceity, I will not argue with it on that one. However you cannot blame them. Having a gay roomate in college made me realize how normal gay people are . and its not a sickness either. Anyhoo let me just say this: The harsh christian/pagan influences have caused people to feel ashamed about their sexuality, not just having homosexual feelings but even plain sexual feelings`! Nakedness is frowned upon. Even though there is incest, "carnal abuse", sexual abuse, domestic violence and paedophiles running rampant in the streets. It is sad that this culture will not evolve and or society is plagued by dispassionate, ultra conservative and very right handed groups who think that a woman and a man should only have sex for procreation and nothin else! so sorry you dont like Jamaica, there is more to it than the homophobes!

Not all Jamaicans Are hostile to Homosexuals. I, for one, does not mind. Its true that most of them are hostile to the idea. Even i was accosted for not being vile to the act but i stood my grounds. It was very unfortunate for the people who lost their lives because of narrow minded Jamiacans. I send my condolences!

I have read all the aforementioned comments and I am feeling very angry. I dont hear those persons who are bashing us about not liking gays speaking about about our young boys who are being targeted. what they do not understand is that most Jamaicans dont business with them as long as they keep their nastyness to themselves. We have a culture and they should respect it. We dont go to the US or any other country and tell people how to live their lives why the hell should you shits tell us what to do. Before you all came and in infest our country we were better off and our children had one less crime being committed against them. As for the story about those shits who have died get your facts straight your own shit heads kills them. Jamaicans dont deny it, they are homophobic and some to the point where they commit murder. The government and police turn a blind eye when it comes to hate crimes making it much harder for justice to be served. But its safe to say that not only gays are killed. Heterosexuals are killed by others of their kind too. Sometimes its over food or a litle bit of money. When a man is hungry and has to feed his family, with no job and no help from the government, this leads him to violence.
I am a gay christian, born and raised in Jamaica. Jamaica has always been my home. Unfortunately some pick and choose what they want to believe from the bible and not live by its entirety. Jamaicans only think of sex and shit when they hear the word gay. Yes homophobia is deep rooted in the culture and will be that way until someone with balls take a stance. Jamaica wants the rest of the world to leave them alone, they want to be rid of all gays and their so called nastiness, because their shit doesnt stink. Give them what they want- end tourism to the island and prohibit jamaicans on entering Canada and the USA unless they sign a law abiding stipulation that requires them to leave their hatred and homophobic violence at home.
There is nothing christian about hating someone who is differnt from you. Just a side note, there also racism and classism discrimination. Though I born there, I was told by a walk foot to leave his country because i was not black enough.
Not only Jamaicans, but many others feel that homosexuals are pedophiles. This is ignorance due to lack of education. 95% of pedophiles identify as heterosexual men. " Keep them away from our children". I would give my life to save a childs. How baout keeping your children off the streets and educating them on safer sex practices, dont forget to include that being a baby mother for numerous men is not a requirement of Jamaican womanhood.
