BESEN TO LAUNCH ORGANIZATION TO COUNTER EX-GAY MYTH

'Truth Wins Out' to Take on Key Issue In Anti-Gay Campaigns

Washington, DC -- As President Bush and Congress prepare to debate gay marriage, a new organization will launch next Wednesday, June 7th to combat so-called "Ex-Gay" ministries and organizations.

"Truth Wins Out will confront a dangerous lie that has buttressed anti-gay campaigns from coast to coast," said founder and noted activist Wayne Besen. "From school boards to city councils to Congress, a lie is being advanced that sexual orientation is something that can be directed or 'cured. It's false, and Truth Wins Out will strike this pillar out from under anti-gay efforts."

Truth Wins Out will launch at the National Press Club with dramatic personal stories of victims of "ex-gay" programs, and insights into how ex-gay theories are woven into nearly all efforts opposed to equality for gay and lesbian Americans. The press conference will also expose the new Right-wing strategy to force "ex-gay" theories into classrooms.

I want to thank you as a mother who was told by a pastor our gay son, Jake, could and should change... that he would live a dark sad life if he didn't. He also told us the Bible says homosexuality is a sin.

These are messages many parents take to heart because they come from someone they have been taught to trust. Young lives are destroyed and families are broken when people listen to these untruths. It is so important to end the lies and untruths coming from the churches and groups like Dobson's Focus on the Family.

We know without a doubt our gay son is living the life he was meant to live. Jake is a most amazing young man who lives his life in honor and grace. We thank God each day we have been blessed to be his parents. We long for the day he can live in equality and truth.

TRUTH WINS OUT is the TERRIFIC name for your new campaign. Every two years, the Republicans trot out the same tired names of so-called "exgays," hiring billboards and placing newspaper ads in an effort to use their deceptive "ministries" against us.

Isn't it funny how Exodus always advertises THOUSANDS CHANGED but never seem to come up with more than the same few names they've been using for decades--and they're always people who are being paid to be "exgay." It's like a Pyramid scheme. You buy into it in order to get paid to get other people to buy into it.

How many of the wrecked souls who've been destroyed by these "ministries" do we continually have to help after they've been brainwashed by the dark forces of Dobson's Demonizing Crew into thinking they'll burn in hell for being gay?

We're approaching Father's Day.

A lot, and I mean a LOT, of people on the ex-gay/Focus on the family side of things say there's a real problem in our culture about masculinity...that boys aren't being taught what being a "man" means any more. In fact, a Little Rock minister whose brother was a gay man who died of AIDS (the brother also was a decorated Viet Nam vet who was a corporate attorney in Houston) is doing a week long series on an evangelical network about what it means to be a man.

Wayne, you respect your parents.

PS to Mrs. Reitan: what a wonderful story. I was lucky enough to have parents just like you, and the kindness and understanding that my parents gave me have helped me overcome many obstacles in my life. I am happy and proud of who I am, and owe much of that to my parents.
