(Weekly Column)
I have yet to visit Focus on the Family's massive "campus" in Colorado Springs - a place so large it has its own zip code. But each year, thousands of fundamentalists traipse through this tourist trap to bow to King James. The people I know who have visited say that pictures of the group's leader, James Dobson, hang ubiquitously while tour guides reverently refer to him as "Dr. Dobson."
"I felt like I was in North Korea and Dobson was playing the part of Kim Jong Il," a friend recently told me. "Call it what you will, but this was a form of idolatry."
While I'm sure the toady tour is mesmerizing, what I really want to do is slip past security and into the bowels of the building where a trap door must exist that leads to "The Fib Factory."
In this liar's lair, I picture a team of butch women and effete men - ex-gays in their Homosexuality and Gender Department - hooked up to polygraph machines. These "experts" are asked by Dobson to say whatever comes to mind about homosexuality. Whenever a red light flickers, signifying a bald faced lie, Dobson turns to his personal assistant and says -- "Write that down -- we have a new talking point."
This scenario is fiction, but so is this group's alarming propaganda. Dobson's maddening mendacity is only surpassed by his capacity for audacity. The hocus pocus from Focus is spreading like a plague of locusts, while their fallacies are finding their way into municipalities.
This week, my organization,
Truth Wins Out, caught the right wing's 800 pound gorilla in two white lies as large as New Hampshire's White Mountains. The group grossly distorted a study by a Canadian researcher that showed teenage lesbians had a higher rate of suicide attempts. Unconscionably, Melissa Fryrear, a spokesperson for Focus on the Family,
blamed gay activists for causing the deaths, saying that teaching self-acceptance caused the young women to be suicidal.
"Regrettably, they think they have to embrace homosexuality because pro-gay advocates told them that they were born gay," said Fryrear.
This interpretation of the data "baffled" Dr. Elizabeth Saewyc, the Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia, who conducted the study.
"Nothing in the brief results we presented or in our overall study could lead to such conclusions," she said after I contacted her and showed her how Focus on the Family portrayed her study results. "Population surveys cannot determine cause and effect, they can only suggest possible links. Even so, other researchers have not found these sorts of links, and neither have we."
The
Canadian Press, a wire service, interviewed Sawwyc and she expressed further alarm on how her scholarly work had suddenly ended up as culture war fodder for the Focus foxhole.
"The research has been hijacked for somebody's political purposes or ideological purposes and that's worrisome."
Realizing that she was caught in a calumny, Fryrear invoked the work of Dr. Robert Spitzer, a Columbia University researcher who had published a 2001 study on sexual orientation. The Focus spokeswoman said in the article that Spitzer's research linked contemplating suicide to unwanted attractions to the same sex.
I contacted Spitzer the next day and it turns out that his work had also
been distorted. He sent me a statement outlining his dismay over the way Focus on the Family misrepresented his study.
"Unfortunately, Focus on the Family has once again reported findings of my study out of context to support their fight against gay rights,"
said Spitzer. "Although a third of the subjects in my study reported having had serious thoughts of suicide related to their homosexuality, not one of them blamed the gay rights movement's advocating a 'born-gay' theory of homosexuality as the cause of their suicidal thinking."
Fryrear essentially tried to dig herself out of a hole caused by distorting the work of one researcher by twisting the work of another. Isn't there something in the Bible about not bearing false witness? Just another day at the
Fib Factory, I guess.
Focus on the Family has always been truth challenged and taken special delight in mocking science. Remember, this group also started The Family Research Council, a Washington lobby that ironically does virtually no original research.
In Focus on the Family's mammoth "campus" there are hundreds of employees. But is there a single person there who knows a centrifuge from a centerfold or a test tube from a boob tube? All they understand is the science of spin, which can lead to embarrassing sin, as James Dobson learned this week.
77 Comments:
What narcissism! that dobson would have more pictures of himself hanging up at Focus on the Family's Reichskanzlerei than of Jesus--not that the two of them have ANYTHING in common. Fib factory?! Let's be more blunt--mean spirited lying sacks of shit factory is more like it.

Sadly, millions of people ("the sheep") still fall for propaganda when it is couched in religion. They seem not to understand that people exist (like James Dobson) who are (1) liars and (2) religious at the very same time. A dichotomy, yes, but one that is most prevalent in our world.

Dr. Dobson may have made a small mistake, but like Jesus, none of us are perfect.
He is doing God's work and carrying out God's plan. You radical homosexual activists might think you are playing "gotcha" now - but Satan will play Gotcha with you people in the end.

No Rex, Dobson is carrying out Dobson's plan. Keep sending him your hard-earned cash to make him the rich powerful, lying bastard that he is while his sheep can barely put food on the table or gas in their cars. If being godly means being like Dobson (and you) I'll take Satan. Thanks for the offer though.

The vast, vast majority of those listening to the crap spewing from Focus will never do an ounce of research and form a conclusion that is of their own volition. The small percent that does do research will seek ONLY resources that will further back their agenda. Either way, they will then march like ants carrying "bounty" back to all the "others" who will gleefully consume the poison and shout "amen!" This is an absolute certainty that Focus knows - nothing else matters.

Rextum--you need to study more about the history of your arch-nemesis satan. In the Hebrew Bible (your old testament) he was the adversary of man, not God; more like a prosecuting attorney for God against man. After Christianity came into contact with religions of the east like Zoroastrianism with their gods of Light and Darkness, satan morphed into the archenemy of both God and man; a convenient bogeyman for the church to terrify the uneducated masses into belief and obedience.
The word satan means adversary and devil is related to the word divine. If I remember correctly it simply means little god. But i'm sure you're so indoctrinated and brainwashed that none of the above will get through your opaque vision.

Wow
I can't get my mind around anyone saying that Dobson is a good man who cures homosexuals....
James Dobson is a cult leader. I'm Episcopalian by the way -- Cures? There is no cure for something that isn't a disease, and homosexuality isn't a disease.
Imagine if you would living in a fundamentalist Muslim country where you could not be Christian. Where as a woman you were beaten down -- had to cover yourself from head to toe -- was property to your husband.
That is no different than Dobson wants to do to gays. The Ex-gay movement is a joke. It doesn't change anyone. It makes them go back in the closet. Marrying women, hiding their desires, having little, or no sex -- but not daring to come out again. It only causes pain. There is an ex-gay in the city where I live. I challenged him to public debate and he refused, saying that he would have to be a fool to debate me where people could see. He is married and pastoring a church, but someone from that church mentioned to a friend that she didn't think that the pastor and his wife were intimate very often.
I also have a friend, not from our area who is "ex-gay" and married who has told me (when I was visiting and while trying to seduce me, which didn't work -- I don't do married men and Ihave a monogamous relationship) that he managed to do it enough to get the two kids and that satisfied the church, but that his wife and he haven't had sex in 10 years now, and he's lucky she doesn't like it much.
I am not impressed by Dr.Dobson, and I am not impressed by literalism.
Lord Christ be with you.

If that means that you formerly felt sexual desire for the same sex, and now only feel sexual desire for the opposite sex, I wonder if you would be prepared to correspond with me? I would be interested to learn how this change in sexual desire was effected.

Phil, because there is such animosity for ex-gays and because there is such animosity for liberals I choose to remain anonymous. Unfortunately, some people do not believe that a person can be ex-gay and politically liberal. Changing does not mean re-adjusting myself to become a predjudice person. I have recieved vile e-mails from Christians accusing me of horrible things. As well, you can see the kinds of cemments that some gays make such as J.T. Why would I risk being anything but anonymous, now? The best I can do is to let gays know that I support same sex marriage and their rights and privileges as people and citizens of this country. And let Christians know that imposing their view onto others is inappropriate and un-Christ like. JMO

I think I would like to know from any who claims to be ex-gay, their definition of gay. It seems that when people talk of homosexuality their focus is on the act. Therefore, if a gay man stops having sex with men he is no longer gay? Please. My 80 something year old uncle rarely has sex these days yet he is no less gay than I am. Likewise, a person who has had sexual relations with a member of his/her own gender is not necessarily homosexual. So, if you were once completely attracted to members of your same gender and are now attracted to members of the opposite gender, you can call yourself ex-gay. Otherwise you are perpetrating the lie. Call yourselves what you are: a homosexual who is trying to be something else. You haven't suddenly become straight. I could pretend to be a tiger all I want but I'll never become one.
And to Carol in Nebraska: I pity you and I fear for you. Jim Jones' followers thought he was a good man too, right up until the minute they drank the punch.
And to Rex in Montana: If I end up in Satan's grasp simply for loving someone, I'll be sure to hold the door opened for you. The book says, Judge not...Hmmm

Jesus destroyed these sin cities, as he did New Orleans for homosexulaity in excess.
The Lord also built San Franciso on a fault line so he could destory it in good time, as he did Sodom.

just like when you hear of someone who has never had sex with ANYONE and they define themselves as gay - so too can you say the same about someone who is ex-gay. a person does not need to go out and "prove" through sexual acts that they are not gay or are gay. For me - it is just about preference. I now prefer men. So, I look at men as potential dates rather than looking at women. Everyone has a different definition. I guess that's up to the individual to define themselves?

I have to say that this is incredibly frustrating. The only people who seem to come forward with stories of change of desire are not credible. And those of whom you claim credible change of desire, won't come forward!
It is therefore impossible to access any evidence of change of sexual desire through therapy.
Well, in my view, medical treatments should be "evidence-based". I would never recommend anyone to undertake a course of medical treatment if there was no evidence of its efficacy and safety.
So if you guys and gals who constitute the evidence simply won't be published, even anonymously, we are stuck.

I am sorry if I sounded angry - that wasn't my intention ast all, and I'm not angry. I did mention frustration - the context was the frustration I felt that it seems impossible to get any ex-gay person (in this particular case, you!) to talk, even to the extent of defining what they mean by the term.
You mentioned that you are ex-gay. I guess, then, that you were unhappy about being gay, and something prompted you to want to change desire. I wasn't proposing, earlier, that you would go into all that on here, but I had wondered if you would be willing to describe the clinical process in private correspondence with me.
But I won't attempt to persecute you with persistent enquiries - you've said you don't want to write about it, and I respect that.

*Sigh!* There are always people on the margin between gay and straight who may end up straight. From here it is a natural (though completely false) step to say "Gee, if he can change; so can everybody else."
If someone decides they want to see if they can try to change their sexual orientation--well, it's still a free country (although our Godly President is rolling that up) and they have a right to try, just as Micheal Jackson has the right to undergo perpetual plastic surgery in a (futile) effort to look like a white woman.
I object when quacks use this as a reason to uphold ill-treatment of gays on the grounds that they might "change" if only Christians did their bit to makes their lives as hard as possible.

Anonymous, you say "people change - it is very simple."
But it ISN'T very simple! It's very complicated! And it's very costly! The Minimum time Dr. Nicolosi has cited using his clinical methodology is two years. He recommends two sessions a week, one individual and one group at $125 per session. This adds up to around $25,000. That is no small sum to invest in clinical treatment when there is no published evidence base of safety or efficacy.
OR, Anonymous, are you saying that your sexual desire changed WITHOUT any clinical process?
Incidentally, from your comment about finding more satisfaction in being with men after changing, I take it that you are female? That is in a sense an added complication, for evidence suggests that male and female homosexuality are not quite the same biologically. (See, for eample, "Born Gay, the Psychobiology of Sex Orientation" by Wilson & Rahman).

It never ceases to fascinate me when people such as Robert in Idaho invoke the story of Sodom and hold it like some kind of shield against the dreaded homos. It is most fascinating, since the tale of the destruction of Sodom actually contains no direct reference to same sex activity, except that the angels are male. However, since Lot offered up his Virgin daughters to the mob, one can presume that he knew they would be perfectly content raping someone of either gender. Of course Robert and others like him do not know this. They have never read the book. They are simply regeritating the information that their preachers are feeding them and spitting it up when they think it fits. It doen't fit in this case. My suggestion to Robert is that he actually read the Bible if he is going to attempt to use it to make a point. And he needs to read it in context, not just to pluck out verses that he needs to demonize a group about which he obviously knows nothing. And after he reads the Bible, he needs to break out the dictionary. Sodomy refers to both anal and oral copulation, which are activities heterosexual people engage in as well. And sodomy is misnamed by the fundamentalists of the past. Strangely enough, I never saw myself as having to give a friggin Bible lesson, but there it is. And if anyone wants to throw out Leviticus or Romans, I'll be happy to discuss those as well.
As for Anonymous-With all due respect, if you are straight now, you were always straight or perhaps bi. Either way, no actual change occurred. You simply discovered your true nature; a sort of coming out with a twist. Excellent for you. The only thing that matters in life afterall is how we feel about ourselves. B. Queer, re-reading through some of the posts I just noticed your comment:
"And Phil, read Wayne's book, if you think you can ever become "ex-gay" you're sadly deluding yourself."
B. Queer, I have read Wayne's book. It confirmed every impression I had formed from reading online and elsewhere about "reparative therapy" etc. And it did so with wit and style.
I have also read the recent book "Ex-Gay Research", a compilation of responses to the Spitzer study which it includes. Other books I've read are "Born Gay, the Psychobiology of Sex Orioentation" (Wilson & Rahman 2005); "The Battle For Normality" by Van Den Aardweg; "Homosexuality, A New Christian Ethic" by Elizabeth Moberly and numerous articles in newspapers and magazines and online.
The results of all that are: I think Moberly and Van Den Aardweg are piffle; I can find not one single convining example of a person who has genuinely changed sexual desire; I do not in fact believe that such change is possible; I believe that "reparative therapy" is snake oil.
That is my current position. I am of course ENTIRELY open to proper evidence that would change that position, as, I am sure, is Wayne.
