Should gay people refuse to file Federal Income Tax to protest discrimination? Kevin Boyle and Charles Merrill think so, and they have backed up their conviction by launching a new website,
Gay Tax.Org.
"According to the General Accounting Office, there are over 1,049 protections and incentives extended to straight married couples, none of which we get," Merrill told The New York Post. "I'm just doing the same thing that Mahatma Gandhi did in India and the colonists did during the War for Independence."
Merrill and Boyle announced that they would not pay Federal or North Carolina Income Tax on over two million dollars worth of stock sales and income for 2004, because of unfair discrimination in the Federal and State Income Tax Codes.
I think this couple makes a great point when they say this is "taxation without representation."

Way to go Kevin and Charles. This only makes the matter of marriage equality even more crucial and necessary. Our tax dollars go to support the fruit of hetero marriage, their children, yet the children of gays and lesbians are relegated to second class citizenshp because of their parents same-sex orientation, another compelling reason to enact marriage equality. Its abominable and inhumane. This society should be ashamed of itself, so much for being the champions of freedom of equality, NOT.

I always bring this up when debating with people about same-sex marriage. If we pay the same taxes as you (and often we pay MORE because most of us dont have children), we should be entitled to the same rights and responsibilities as everyone else.

More power to these guys!!!
I keep saying we should get single parents on our side. Single parents (really the children of single parents) are discriminated against by the tax code in the same way. If you can't claim married filing jointly, you pay more right there. Plus a whole bunch of deductions and credits are out of reach for you because a married couple can make twice as much money and still get them. A married couple with 2 children (family size 4) pays significantly less in taxes than a single parent with 3 children (same family size).
Wasn't it nice of the family values crowd to end the "marriage penalty"?

I love the idea...all I need to do now is get rich to participate. Unfortunately, I'm working at the Tacky Taco Bell.

well done. i have always used this argument when people are only for different sex marriage. if the taxes are discriminating of who is who then people should have the right to protest and gain civil equality.

I support their efforts.
Perhaps they would have a stronger position if they filed their taxes as though they were married and paid only that tax amount.
But whichever they do, they should put the unpaid tax into an escrow account until their issue is resolved. This takes away the argument that they are just tax evaders.

I strongly support this action - not only have they been paying taxes to help support heterosupremacist policies, but the state and the federal government have no problem visiting them with horrendous indignities over something as silly as riding in a damned ambulance.
As for childrearing, why should gay families be paying more to support the rest of the country? Since Republicans contend that gays should not be allowed to be foster parents or adopt children without providing a single benefit or break to gay couples with children, there is no reason to be paying the government.

Yep, this is why I argue that gay people's obligations don't go away just because some stubborn folks in this country want to pretend gay folks don't have any.
It's like the contemptable jokes they make regarding these quality of life issues.
'Don't like being gay? Change is possible.'
'Don't like the marriage bans, well you can marry the opposite sex!'
'Don't like being beaten, then why are you out where people can see you?'
'Don't like paying taxes, then why do you have a job?'
Don't like this country, then why are you here?'
Of course, a good retort would be,
'you don't like us gay people, then how come you like our money and votes?'
The fact remains, gay folks can't escape any obligations to their families, and country-they have all the responsibilities, without the privileges and rights that go with them.
This couple has put up, it's time their country and government put up too.

I agree with the premise of what they're doing, but after reading their website, was I the only one here that was a bit turned-off by the "we're so rich, beautiful, wonderful" tone of their biography? I mean, bragging about having slept with many of the most beautiful men and women in the world thing, and all their hob-nobbing with the elite of the world's upper crust, does not generally endear the masses to your cause. I think a little (ok, a lot) less of this would have made a much better statement on their behalf. Anyone else agree?

They did not write that they were so rich and beautiful, that was an article in the New York Post gossip Page Six. The valuable content of the site, www.gaytax.org is Govenor Howard Dean's support and the various articles on Taxation without Representation and Guerrila Tax Warfare.

Thanks Wayne for starting this blog. Hope some of the bloggers will call into Alan Colmes show tonight, Monday, June 19th at 11:00 pm and air their views.
About the rich and famous posting, yes that was a gossip sheet that got mainstream media attention. As a result I have had so many e-mails asking for donations. The beneficial side is that media is curious and has given publicity to the cause. Who makes bigger news, Paris Hilton or some poor migrant worker fighting for a cause??? Just the way things are today and what makes news. Unfortunate, but things are different, and gays and lesbians are not the economically underpriviledged class, like the blacks in Selma Alabama back in Civil Rights movement the 50's. Corporations search for gays to employ because they think out of the box, as outsiders in a dumbed down conservative society, they come up with new and innovative ideas.

心中一阵不安升降机，因为我忽然又想起了那道剑光升降平台，可怕的剑光升降台，美丽的剑光登车桥。为什么那一剑是那么的美丽货架，却又那么的可怕呢集装袋？在我倒下之前我说地磅，好美的剑塑料托盘，好恨的剑塑料托盘。我倒下了仓储笼。在我失去知觉之前仓储笼，我听到他说北京货架，这叫艺术超市货架，剑的艺术北京货架。
我并没有死广州货架，原来我的心是在右边仓储货架，而是不是左边货架厂。所以在那穿胸一剑之下我并没有死南京货架。
是一阵暴雨把我冲醒了货架公司。听说雨是上天的眼泪深圳货架，也许这天又有人死在那美丽的剑光之下吧服装货架！我张开嘴巴托盘，任雨水打进我的嘴托盘，直冲我的胃塑料托盘。我的伤口又开始流血塑料托盘，但已经不痛了木托盘。试问：仓储笼一个心已经死了的人仓储笼，肉体上的疼痛又算得了什么呢仓储笼？我知道我的刀再练一百年也无法那么美丽仓储笼，那么恨托盘，而且永远别想杀了他托盘。

他盯着我广告衫，握剑的手越来越紧钢坯，我知道那道美丽的剑光可能随时发出过滤网。在那美丽过后疏水阀，我的生命将画上句号胸章。
阳光照在了刀上发热管，反射到他的脸上手机耳机。他发现了那把刀螺杆，我的刀插销，宝刀蝴蝶，没有鞘的刀工具包。
刀已在我手中点钞机，刀还是那把刀配电箱，人却已不是那个人流苏，因为心不是那颗心沙滩巾。
他为了杀我竟找了我十年氯化镁，而为了和我比武竟帮我从屋顶拿下我的刀来双面胶带，并放在我的手中碳纤维。我忽然发现排线，他也变了汽车座垫，他在后悔十年前将所有高手都杀绝珍珠奶茶。
高手的悲哀太阳伞。
我握紧了刀桥架，我看着他的眼tpr，已经不再像十年前那样明亮了钢丝。
他的剑划出柴油发电机组，划出一道美丽的剑光护栏。我想围栏，这十年他大概在不停地使自己的剑光更美围栏。
我的刀也出了隔离网。简单的动作隔离网，一刀刺进了他的胸网片。那道美丽的光忽然停止网片，停在我的衣服上南京货架。
他说北京货架：这也是艺术北京货架，杀人的艺术北京货架，想不到你十年不动刀还懂这个艺术仓储货架。
我说仓储货架：因为我不想再让你痛苦了广州货架。
他说广州货架：谢谢货架厂。
我走了货架公司。我头也不回的走了塑料托盘。没有取回我的刀塑料托盘，因为我觉得它在我身边已经没用塑料托盘，我后悔我十年前为什么不扔了它塑料托盘？我听到了尸体倒下的声音塑料托盘。我流泪了塑料托盘，我真的不想杀他仓储笼，十年前不想仓储笼，十年后也不想仓储笼，因为我下山时答应过师父仓储笼，一切让着他仓储笼。
我叹了一口气仓储笼。远去仓储笼。
