Four youths were charged with a hate crime assault on a gay singer who was attacked as he left a Manhattan gay bar, police said on Sunday. Kevin Aviance, 38, who scored No. 1 dance hits on the Billboard charts with "Da Da Din" and more recently "Alive" in 2003, was attacked late Saturday and kicked by four youths who called him "faggot."
Aviance told the New York Post from his hospital bed that he was especially distraught by the assault because he had been scheduled to perform at a host of gay pride events next week in advance of the city's Gay Pride march on June 25.
"I'm supposed to be doing all this stuff. With my jaw wired shut, what can I do?" he was quoted as saying.
There is the misperception that hate crimes only happen in rural, conservative areas. But even in liberal places, such as the East Village, hate crimes occur. The lies spewed by our opponents reach impressionable youths in all corners of this nation. Let us wish Kevin a speedy recovery.

This makes me so mad until I"m sick. I'm glad he'll recover. It's pathetic to think that at least he's not dead?!
OMG.... I went to the Pride parade here in Los Angeles and there was a knot of people screaming about hell and brimstone from speakers and bullhorns. What, it's not abuse if it's Scripture?
I walked up to three of these guys and asked them what did they think I was? Their contempt was intense...so one said...I don't know..what are you? I said, guess....they were looking at each other so I said go ahead, guess. So one said, I can't guess, I don't know.
And that's when I said...'exactly'.
People who use Scripture to bully, abuse and screech...think they can wrap themselves in piety and it's all good.
All things considered...none of the crowd at the parade got violent or abusive back. And that's exactly what these cowards count on. They are more certain that gay folks won't punch them, then they are about God's will and intentions.
And as someone who worked recently for the Los Angeles Police Dept. I'd have more respect for these people if their outreach was towards gang members. Because it's the gang members and drug dealers who are REALLY after the children...

My prayers are with Mr. Aviance. It's a sick world when a talented and harmless person gets treated like this.
Yes, I had read in a book a while back (sorry i cant remember the name now) about how non-violent gays *usually* are and that police like working security for gay events because it's such a piece of cake. I *think* the chapter in this particular book was called 'Our peaceable kingdom'. This is one of our strengths, but when dealing with these religious thugs, it can also be a weakness (unfortunately). Best wishes to Aviance for a full recovery.
