There is an
excellent article in today's Washington Post that discusses the horrifying deaths of two gay boyfriends in the barbaric state of Iran. It also touches on the sad fact that most of the mainstream media ignored this tragedy, as if two dead gay teens mean nothing. It is the same media silence I got when I informed the press in 2003 that Jerry Falwell's HIV+ "ex-gay" spokesman was engaged in unprotected orgies with men he met online. Again, the lives of gay men were considered not worthy of media coverage.

I think the importance of paying attention to this, is that, the religious conservatives in the west may be salivating to the idea of doing the same to Gays and Lesbians here.
The hanging is based on laws very similar to the ones found in the DEuteronomy, so I wouldn't be surprised if some fundamentalist evangelic or roman catholic, or orthodox jew try to push a legislation based on that... they do it with Gay marriage, just happened with steem cell research, abortion is not far...
What would be next?

This is one reason why I simply refuse to latch onto the religious scene now - it has been manipulated and abused with such impunity that there is no justification for hanging onto superstition that is merely meant to persecute others.
I'm sure we'll see outrage from the American Taliban. . .er. . .self-described "Christians" about this heinous execution - NOT.

Is there a bit of exagerated paranoia going on here. The pendulum always swings but never too far either way. I don't think Americans will stand for the hanging of gays. And wait for the next president and the stem cell issue to come up again. Bush is an idiot and we all know it.

Recently, the will of the American People hasn't been very important... just the ideology (religion) of some.
No long ago we have seen cases of lynching in the south, what about Mathew Shepard... and the court was on the side of the criminals in the case of Gwen Araujo... there are groups that are still trying to make homosexuality a crime, and the fight against same sex marriage is based on "religious principles"
What makes you think America is far from hangings?

When this story initially happened, I sat down and wrote letters to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Senator Elizabeth Dole. I asked that they simply condemn this action by Iran, as they are both all too willing to condemn that nation in other arenas.
One year later, I am still waiting on a reply.
These two are always going after Iran in various ways. Why did they ignore this plight? And while I know the answer, it just yet again shows the true colors of conservatives in this government.

Serious question.
What evangelical Christian group, apart from Fred Phelps (who has NO visible support and a lot of visible disdain from today's ecC community) is actually suggesting this in America?
And given the New Testament (I've heard ecC'ers say that if homosexuality is a sin, then every person in the world is an equal sinner who's done a different sin - "once you perpetrate one sin, you're guilty of them all"), how could they possibly justify doing this?
Seriously, it's not enough just to say they're "salivating" at the thought of doing this...what proof do you have?

Hate to even think of this, but I recall reading the words of (an apparently str8t) man, an American expat there on business, I believe, who witnessed a public beheading in Saudi Arabia of a man or men caught in however they defined a "homosexual act".
Perhaps witnessed isn't the right word...he was apparently semi-forcibly rounded up along with others (many ostensibly "natives") to watch what would happen to them should they try to act on their sexual feelings in such a manner.
This was years ago...and the Saudi government still stands.
How are you reasonably going to get people in Islamic areas to reject this type of punishment short of a full scale revolution?

Google "Dominionism" and "Biblical law" if you want to check it out. Most of the Religious Right wants to re-criminalize homosexual sodomy. Where do you think they would house such "felons?" Look at it this way: When there are groups that put their religious beliefs over the well being of people they don't even know, yes, there is an indication of hate.
I Fred Phelps has said many, many hateful things in moments of extrem sorrow. Jerry Falwall blamed 911 on inocent people...
When A denomination is torn apart because there is a wing that refuse to recognize a Bishop because of his sexual orientation, and when there are wings of the mormon church that still believe -and practice- polygami with certain level of impunity, then is when the questions comes to mind... how far would christian fanatics go is the few laws that protect gays and lesbians were not in place.
Poisoning people's minds by telling them that homosexuality is a sin, that "sodomites" will go to hell and that "God hate fags" is evil, these messages, have an impact on the so called middle America, and people - used to believe everything they hear on TV without thinking- later go, comit crimes against gays and invoke "gay fear" and other kind of "causes" for their behavior. Why the killers of Gwen Araujo received minor sentences? Why are the killers of Mattew Shepard trying to get out of their punishment? Why is so difficult to enhact laws that protect EVERYONE, regardless sexual orientation... come on! if this is not the works of religious right wingers... who else? Then, I stop and think... how far they would go to make stone gays to death if there were not protection against this barbarities? do you need more proof? have you been to church lately? Have you access to mainstream media?

I can't even begin to say how grossed out I was when I read this. Growing up in a Catholic family, I've heard my family members say how "wrong" it is to be gay, and it makes me sick, knowing that people are killing other people just because of their Sexual Orientation.
You can't help who you love. It's just the way it is.
