(James Dobson Strikes Out)

Focus on the Family is feeling the repercussions from morphing into a narrow, special interest hate group. There used to be a time when they actually tried to help real families. These days, however, James Dobson is fixated on abortion and gay people, at the expense of many other important issues.

As a result,The Atlanta Braves told his group to take a hike during "Faith Day" at the ballpark. Focus was banned after sponsoring the first such event at Turner Field last month. Dobson's simplistic, wrathful, vigilante version of God is offensive and would have alienated many people at the game. This was a smart move by the Braves.

It is indeed time to separate the wheat from the chaff . . . time to separate true Christianity from the false teachings and rhetoric that have proliferated for so long. I pray that the Braves' decisive action will be just the beginning.

Where did America's religious left go to? Once upon a time ministers and preachers of all denominations were at the forefront of every socially progressive movement. Everyone thinks of the 60's, but they were probably the logical extension of movements that started in the 30's and earlier.

The religious left was radical. Jehovah's Witnesses went to prison for their pacifism during WW2. They had their children taken from them for not saluting the flag in classrooms. There were Catholic Worker Houses in the 30's (they're still around). Edward Bellamy's "Looking Backward" with it's Christian Socialist vision was popular. Religious Communism sprang up all over 19th century America. We can't even concieve of what the Oneidans did with marriage. These days Oneida would be attacked by ATF commandos.

Thanks Wayne for removing those (undoubtedly) hateful posts. My crack about his glasses was partially a joke because i knew the fundos, who have absolutely no sense of humor, would swallow the bait; and of course as usual they didnt disappoint. As Bugs Bunny says--'what a maroon'.

Pete,

The religious left is still alive and kicking, but the numbers have dwindled. I find it ironic that the fundies of today were down the throats of the "radical religious hippies" of the 60's. I grew up in a house that praised God and broke into animal testing labs. I was nearly born on the sidewalk in front of the White House (my mother's plan). My mom was a member of the group, "Nudists for Jesus." Have no fear. The backlash of the "Right" is bringing back the religious left in force. We were protesting on the day of the first gay marrage vote. There were about 20 of us. My dad made a sign that said, "God is love."
