Signorile: Gay Groups Suckered By Fundie Con Artist

How is it that officials at the Human Rights Campaign, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, the Empire State Pride Agenda, and other prominent gay groups got suckered by a 25-year-old heterosexual evangelical Christian, a man who promised to be their gay-friendly savior but who was simultaneously giving training sessions to antigay groups and calling homosexuality a "sin" on Christian radio? The simple answer is: They wanted to believe.

I just finished reading the "Advocate" article you linked to. What a creep! This one sounds like a sociopath who's playing both sides of the street, or it could be that peculiar mix of sincerity and skullduggery that swarms within a evangelical Christian's brain.

Maybe he does not see the anti-gay groups as anti gay and maybe he sees gays as friends who are also sinners??? Too bad he does not see the poweer hungry machine behind the anti-gay groups. He probably was sincere in the beginning.

Isn't this just business as usual?
The gay community has gotten stabbed in the back and betrayed in so many ways. In the name of religious or political expediency.
Ultimately, the treatment is cynical.
The Clintons continually portrays themselves as gay friendly. They get invited into the tent, they make their speeches and glad hand where they think they need to be.
Then they support the anti gay DADT military policy and respectively support and sign the DOMA and marriage being defined as between and man and a woman.
Hillary marches in the Pride parade every June in NYC.
Why doesn't the gay community just show her the same back of the hand she's showed us?
Who do we turn to after all? Who is really sincere and brave enough to support our community?
The betrayals keep piling up, and our efforts to secure advocates looks more and more pathetic, not strong.
I read the article in Advocate as well.
And came away seething. As a straight advocate who'd rather die, (and I mean that sincerely) than do something like this to my gay friends.
My loyalty isn't split.
Mine is to justice, to equal protection and access.
My loyalty is to the Constitution and it's own mission statement, NOT the Bible or any other religious text.
And those who anoint themselves in a cloak of leadership should have the same sense of justice and honor it.

Evil-angelicals are nothing but a sneaky, slimy bunch of "hetlers" out to destroy the community from the inside. Ironically, Andrew Marin is the only one screwing people in the ass.

not all evangelical christians are homophobic bigots. Look and the UCC and the ELCA those are basically progressive evangelical religions. Heck I attend a reconciling church in the ELCA and those people are very friendly and not in the least hate gays. Most evangelicals unlike what the fundie right would have you believe think we deserve equal rights even if some of them don't believe that being gay is in god's plan. They still believe in social justice. So I really wish people on this website would stop painting all evangelicals with the same brush.

I can agree, Adam, but unfortunately, the squeaky wheel gets the oil. Fundamental evangelicals are getting the press, so they are the ones that most people identify with evangelical christians. It's not right, I know. But I don't see progressive evangelicals standing up and speaking louder. As a gay man of faith, I wish they would.
