All I can do is shake my head at the spectacular hypocrisy of Ted Haggard, leader of the National Association of Evangelicals. Apparently, Ted was in bed with a 49 year old male hooker. The good news is - at least it wasn't a page boy. I give props to the whore with a moral core for still getting paid twenty years past his prime and exposing this hypocrite.

Interestingly, the accuser said that the irreverent reverend liked to tweak on Tina, making him the first (alleged) PNP preacher. No wonder why Haggard had so much energy on TV!!!

Haggard says he isn't a homo, but then why did he resign? It makes no sense. Plus - and let's be honest - Hag looks like a fag. He's queer as a 3 dollar bill. I believe the charges. Even my parents outed him in the film Jesus Camp a few weeks ago. Teddy, it's time to come out!

Finally, are there any straight right wing preachers or Republicans left?

Haggard has already admitted that it is true to the press and his church. They sent an email (available online) to members saying such. That's why they cancelled the rally for his support yesterday.

What he says he DIDN'T do was have a gay relationship with the guy over 3 years, and that he never cheated on his wife and is not gay, which I think is technically true from what I have read.

Otherwise, I think it's really great that Mike Jones is 49. Maybe he failed the lie detector because those were 49 AOL years and he's really 53...

No doubt all the evidence is not in, but he does look pretty guilty. It's hard as hell to not be a bit glib at his downfall. In truth, it's all very tragic. Being a Baptist minister and gay, I understand the struggle that Haggard has gone through and will continue to go through. My hope is that he can find his integrity in a supportive environment. My suggestion is let's not crucify him, but rather pray that he may turn out to be a powerful convert for our side.

Have you seen the picture of Mike Jones? He may be 'old' but he's built like a brick house. I'm sure Ted Hag was getting prostate massages from him as well.

I feel very sad for the family as well. He is a grown man who had every opportunity to live his life according to his principles and he chose not to. Whatever mask he is wearing (that of the straight preacher or that of the homosexual) he needs to figure out who the real man is. Unfortunately, he has indulged himself and hurt his family greatly. Either way he has behaved selfishly.

The prostitute who scandalized Jimmy Swaggart, a Ms. Debra Murphree, also failed a lie detector test when that story broke in 1988. Swaggart nonetheless confessed. It seems that many people fail these tests when under the stress of a breaking top news story. The evangelical community's house of cards has collapsed. The facade has been ripped away, and indeed, the truth really does set one free!

If Haggard claims he is not gay or had a gay relationship, then why on earth did he solicit the services of a male escort in the first place, massage or no massage? I find that a bit odd if not weird. NO straight male would do that. He could have asked for female escort instead. The man is in denial just as McGreevey was and all the rest of the self-loathing bigots who hide behind religion and denigrate our lives let alone deny us our rights. May they suffer eternally. I have no pity for any of them. The Log Cabiners have been pretty silent too.

I can't help but draw all kinds of other analogies to this situation.
'Passing', those who do it, are trying to wear an identity that isn't their own. They do it precisely because passing offers a certain amount of freedom. Freedom of expression without judgement. Freedom of association and freedom to pursue whatever profession, living arrangement and happiness you can with the full support of your community.
You live without overt threat.
But underlying all that is another threat.
Your true self being exposed or breaking out on it's own.
As I say often, identity is a POWERFUL and undeniable feature of self.
Obviously this man didn't want to have to live as a gay person. It's harder, it carries much less of all the freedoms and choices just mentioned.
Passing, is like wearing a cloak in public and it's fragile as well as easily ripped away.
It can't protect indefinitely or surely.

But rejecting what you are because it's harder to be your true self is one thing.
BUT, placing yourself in the socio/political position of making social justice THAT MUCH HARDER for those you left behind is unforgivable.

Passing to get to the level necessary to HELP your brethren is the higher ground that sometimes deserves latent praise.
It may not be brave, but it can be effective for positive change and progress.

Passing to hurt those like you is bad deeds justified by nothing.
I would no more have anything but contempt for an anti Semitic ex Jew who outed his own to Nazis. A light skinned black passing for white that supported Jim Crow, or a woman that aligned herself with misogynists who would deny a woman birth control, the vote or equal opportunity in the workforce.
Haggard is what he is, pathetic...he is without a community now, gay or straight.
That's what you get for straddling the fence. It cuts off the circulation to your cojones.

Nor would I. But people have all sorts of conflicts and gray areas. It might not be that he is gay but really does love his wife and family on one hand and does like the "darker" mysterious side of his life, too. Who is really to say except him. Just because he goes to an escort does not mean he is gay. It means he goes to a male escort for other kinds of fun. Anything more is speculation.

Huh? That doesn't make sense at all. Log Cabin has nothing whatsoever to do with Ted Haggard other than fighting against him within the structure of the Republican Party. They've certainly never supported the guy in any way. In fact, I find it really unlikely that there is a single politician that was endorsed by both Haggard and LCR. It would be like finding a Democrat endorsed by both Sam Nunn and Stonewall.

Part of me is delighted to see another gay-bashing bigot come to light as the hypocrite that he is. But I'm also starting to feel sorry for this guy. Nobody should have to live with that kind of self-loathing. But this is what happens when people surrender the right to think for themselves. Religion of any kind, but particularly the malevolent kind preached by these ultra-conservative evangelicals, demands that the follower just believe what he's told. Haggard did that, and even worse, preached it to thousands, and now he's paying the price.

I hope the so-called "ex-gay ministries" are paying attention. Haggard did just what they want gays to do: he played the part of a straight man. He got married and fathered children. He lived a lie, and he's hurt himself, his wife, his kids, his church, and I'm sure the rest of his family. Wouldn't it have been so much better if he'd learned early on that being gay is who he is and that's just fine?

I'm sick to death of these screeching religious types who cherry pick from the Bible and then beat people up with it. Haggard was one of those. On the one hand, he's getting what he deserves, but on the other, I hope he can learn to live with who he really is.

I think that what Wayne DOES do is heap scorn and derision on the people who deserve it. You have a "mega-hick church" that gears up to pass a Marriage Protection Amendment in Colorado while the guy walking across the stage with the Bible in his hand is secretly bedding down with a muscular male escort. Those people DESERVE as much disdain as we can all heap on them. Why? Because they don't have the courage to be honest or authentic about the real world. They prefer their delusions.

Personally, I'm sickened by these people. It is only natural and right to be repelled by them and the arrogant way that they push ideas and notions which are so obviously foolish to any thinking person. "Pastor Ted" now says that he has struggled with "that side" of him for his whole life.

Therein lies the problem: As long as religious zealots view gayness as a "problem" that should be ignored and fought against (while taking on a wife no less), they will continue to experience such embarrassing "falls from grace". Behind those phoney masks of holiness, however, it seems that grace never found a true home to begin with. "Freedom in Christ"? Really, now.

It was so interesting to read the forthcoming Michelangelo Signorile interview with Mike Jones and learn about how Haggard went about fulfilling himself sexually . . . the secrecy, the hypocrisy, the prostitute patronage, the sexual contact devoid of emotion or affection, the lights dimmed so he can't really see what's going on. The orgy fantasies straight out of a William Higgins porn movie. The combining of sex with drugs.

These are the actions of a man who feels his homosexual desires are depraved and shameful. He goes about having homosexual relations in a way that confirms his view of them. He thinks: "Gay sex is sick and the way I'm having it is proof of that." I think these closeted evangelicals have a deep emotional need for homosexuality to be all the bad things they say it is. They try to make it bad. Maybe it's not exciting to them unless it's bad!

There's one thing I'm absolutely convinced of, and it's that the obsession Bible fundamentalists have with Gay sex is unseemly! It masks a twisted desire to "defile" themselves by engaging in what they preach so fervently against. Basically, they talk about how loathsome Gay sex is just for the chance to talk about it! You can tell by how explicit some of them are willing to get. Why, they think nothing of inserting inappropriate language into a sermon, even with elderly women sitting in the front row of the church and children sitting behind them in the choir loft.

This is the essence of what I call "dirtylegs" religion!!! These so-called ministers of the Gospel are unable to concentrate on what's spiritual because they're obsessed with what's carnal. How many preachers have set the church on fire with anti-Gay rhetoric after the sight of a handsome young assistant pastor gave them a secret boner? I'll bet if we knew how many, the number would blow our minds! Shame-filled evangelists are in the process of working out their own psycho-sexual hang-ups, and they make us suffer while they do it. They hate our guts for daring to challenge the view of homosexuality as sin that they're so heavily invested in!

I agree that Haggard has the look of a gay man. I have thought a lot of preachers have that look and sound. I always wondered about him anyway. My hope is that he might come to terms with his faith and his sexuality and like many of us, be able to merge the two in a happy union. He does deserve our prayers because like many folks, he fell, but we all deserve a second chance

Andrew Sullivan posted a screed by David Frum on the moral differences between living closeted married and all that, admitting your homosexuality and asking forgivness and compared that to going to same sex prostitutes, living openly gay and taking drugs.

In Frum's world, that of Haggard or any other person who can't see homosexuality as exclusive of any other pathology.
the scenarion Frum brought up is of gay=addiction=adultery=and so on.

It doesn't occur to Haggard that his liasons didn't have to be a part of a drug taking, sex with prostitutes sort of situation.
And then he says that it's the homosexuality part that he's struggled with 'all his life' that is the worst and most repugnant.
The adultery and drug use of course would have to come later and of course is something heterosexuals struggle with too.
So those TWO issues couldn't possibly be the most repulsive, could they?

And if the homosexuality is what he's struggled with 'all his life' then we are to assume it's from a young age, and tender formative age and THIS is the feature he can be held least accountable and responsible for.
This is what he had no choice over.

But to hear the fundies tell it, he and every other gay person always did.
That's STUPID!!!

Haggard has the opportunity right now to take advantage of a second chance, but judging by what I read about him lately, he sure doesn't seem to be headed in that direction. Check out this news excerpt from the website 365gay.com:

"In a statement read at the church Sunday, Haggard confessed to unspecified 'sexual immorality,' accepted responsibility for his actions and asked forgiveness. (James)Dobson will join pastor Jack Hayford of The Church on the Way in Van Nuys, Calif. and the pastor Tommy Barnett of First Assembly of God in Phoenix in overseeing Haggard, according to a letter from Haggard read at New Life services on Sunday. 'Those men will perform a thorough analysis of my mental, spiritual, emotional and physical life. They will guide me through a program with the goal of healing and restoration for my life, my marriage and my family," Haggard wrote.'"

This statement doesn't sound like repentance to me! It sounds like public relations. That's the last thing he should be engaged in after what has happened.

I agree with you, Stuffed Animal. And all Dobson and his band of self-righteous zealots will do is make Haggard hate himself even more than he already does. Going to them for "analysis" is another thing he shouldn't be doing. I hope that someone somewhere will be able to get through to him that he can be a happy, healthy gay man before he sinks even further and decides to remove himself from this life.

Well, In the state of South Carolina, the marraige amendment that states only 1 man and 1 woman shell be legal, so for me as a gay man, I may as well get married to a female& have kids and just pay a male husler as Haggard did, No gay couple in S.C. will be honored But instead considerd 2nd class citizens.

It sure sounds like he, or someone like him, has gotten near you, if not in person, then in philosophy! I'll say this one more time for emphasis: Gay people exist. Bisexual people exist. Straight people exist. Sexually confused people exist. "Ex-Gay" people do NOT exist. It is a mythological identity created by Religious Right Wingers to help advance their theocratic agenda. It is also an unsubtle slam against Lesbians and Gay men which suggests that their sexual attraction is both undesirable and "correctable."

In the process of clarifying one's sexual identity, there's no need to denigrate that of others, and there's no excuse for it, either. Anybody who comes to the conclusion that homosexual acts are wrong for him or her has my support. I have no problem with them abstaining from homosexual conduct, engaging in heterosexual conduct and identifying as heterosexual. I don't even have a problem with the word "Straight" like some folks do. However, I will always take strong exception to the fallacy, the absurdity, the bigotry and the insult of people who insist on calling themselves "ex-Gay." You either are homosexual or you aren't, and anybody who claims otherwise is just as guilty of factual distortion as Ted Haggard.

The problem is the political and social ramifications of the term "ex-gay." Yes, of course you have every right to call yourself ex-gay, but to hear it brings about suspician and fear. Semantics need not be used where there is no political agenda. If you were once gay and are no longer gay, people would feel more comfortable if you called yourself straight. Do you get my drift at all? You seem to be an intelligent person, so I believe you can dig where I and others are coming from. Again, I stress, it isn't important where you have been. It's where you are now that matters. And again, semantically speaking(if that is a word) I would never refer to a M to F trannie as an ex-man. Why would I call you ex-gay? Because I used to be gay. I was not a heterosexual stuck in a lesbian life. So - it is kind of different - but I get your drift, too. And it's the story of my whole life not just parts. Yesterday was as important as today. So it does matter who I was. And yes, I can understand that it may cause fear and suspicion but that's on someone else's mind - not mine. I would never tell a gay man or lesbian that they must change or that they are any less valueable because of being gay. And neither am I less valueable. I hate the political crap more so than most. I despise Dobson and his group for taking children and parents and making promises where none can be given. Thank you for understanding, JH.
