(Weekly Column)

In the very week Saddam Hussein was sentenced to hang, George W. Bush has found his presidency in the gallows. Hussein now awaits his fate as a dead duck, while Bush will usher in his final two years as a lame duck. How bitterly ironic it must be that the Democratic landslide victory was fueled on outrage over the quagmire in Iraq and the president's refusal to "change the course" even after the facts repeatedly changed on the ground. This is more a victory for reality than a win over a sleazy and atavistic Republican majority that empowered lowlifes such as Tom Delay and Jack Abramoff and extremists like Rick Santorum.

The GOP is learning that reality may take extended vacations, but it never completely vacates. Denial may be effective as a tactic, but at the end of the day it does not stave off tragedy. In an even a greater state of denial than the president are Prozac Protestants, who must have become depressed and stayed home in larger numbers this Election Day. Who can blame them? First, we had Ralph Reed "humping in" on accounts with lobbyist Jack Abramoff, then we had Foleygate and now we have the fall of Rev. Ted Haggard.

Haggard was the pastor of 14,000 member New Life Church in Colorado-Springs and President of the National Association of Evangelicals. However, what started as Haggard's calling for the Lord ended with a call boy. Former sex worker Michael Jones accused Haggard of hiring him for sex and purchasing Crystal Meth, making Haggard a PNP Preacher (Party and Play).

In a letter read to the New Life Church congregation on Nov. 5, Haggard confessed, "The fact is, I am guilty of sexual immorality. And I take responsibility for the entire problem. I am a deceiver and a liar...That's part of my life that is so repulsive and dark that I have been warring against it for all of my adult life. The accusations made against me are not all true, but enough of them are that I was appropriately removed from my church leadership position."

What was most bizarre about the Haggard meltdown was watching the cartoonishly emotional reaction by his befuddled congregation. The pictures were telling in that, once again, we had thousands of holy rollers weeping with make-up running down their faces, while passing around several dead forests worth of Kleenex.

I know I'm supposed to feel compassion, but I don't (other than for Haggard's wife and children.) I just want to shake these people and scream, "how naive are you?"

Time and again, the downfall of closeted conservative leaders is met by vacant stares and the collective refrain, "how could this have happened?" What seems to separate many Christian conservatives from the rest of the nation is the inability to learn from experience. It's one thing if the Haggard scandal was an isolated incident, but how many times can these people get burned before they wake up?

In January, Oklahoma preacher Lonnie Latham stepped down from his congregation and the executive committee of the Southern Baptist Convention after being arrested for allegedly asking an undercover male police officer for oral sex. There have also been the recent falls of Spokane Mayor Jim West, New Jersey Governor James McGreevey and Rep. Mark Foley.

Even after the disgrace of all these prominent men, the church refuses to ask relevant questions and continues to promote the lie that homosexuality is just a temptation that can be changed. Indeed, Haggard even sought the help of James Dobson and other preachers to cure him of his impulses.

But if this preacher couldn't pray away the gay, with all the power and prestige he had to lose, who can, and how can Dobson help him? It is time Evangelical Christians exchange their anti-gay rhetoric for reality. (Dobson, afraid his therapy will be exposed as ineffective in a high profile case, today said that that he will no longer help Haggard because he is "too busy.")

Haggard is correct that there is a dark and repulsive part of his life, but it is not his homosexuality, it is his closet and the lies he used to maintain it. He built his empire on the backs of openly gay people and now he faces an awful comeuppance for his anti-gay sins.

In an interesting twist, social conservatives originally whined that the timing of the Haggard outing was political. They might be right, but too bad. Having played the sexual orientation card as an election year ploy for decades, they are in no position to complain about this November ballot box boomerang.

In a church of 14,000, at least 5-10 percent of members are gay, including many children poisoned by their preacher's toxic rhetoric. Perhaps the fall of Haggard will make it easier for these young men and women to come out. But first, instead of washing away Haggard's supposed Sins, the Christian Right must unwash their brains and repent for the holy Hell they have put so many good people through, including several of their most respected leaders.

Two questions re: Haggard.

First, if the guy wants to be married to his wife and believes that is right and best for him, why urge him to "come out"? How does this solve his problems?

Second, why does Haggard's fall prove that homosexuality is immutable anymore than, say, the fall of Swaggart and others prove that heterosexual lust is immutable? A lot more preachers fall prey to unwanted heterosexual lusts, yet we don't use that to prove that there's no such thing as self-control. Haggard was obviously not looking for intimacy but for gay sex fulfillment -- and for him, this was an unwanted SSA. Where's the proof of immutablity just because a guy yields to temptation? Am I missing something in the logic here?

No- if your dick gets hard because it sees sexual symbols (organs) that's normal. If your dick does not get hard when you have sex with your wife or when thinking about women - then we have to consider that. But as you can see - he gets hard both ways.

Anon, the issue of immutability is not whether one can control one's actions. We can.

The issue is whether one can control one's orientation - the internal mechanism that says, "hey, that's attactive".

As you said, Haggard had "unwanted SSA" and took steps to get rid of it. But none of his efforts were fruitful.

When you try to change something every way that you can and it just doesn't change, that suggests it might be immutable (i.e. not changeable). And that is what Haggard's case suggests. If anyone wanted to not find guys attractive, it was Haggard. But try as he might, he just couldn't get rid of that pesky SSA.

Of course Haggard didn't have to act on his desires. Many people never do. And perhaps he will never do so again. But that will not have much, if any, impact on what goes on inside him.

Perhaps sexual orientation is mutable... but poor Ted Haggard thought that too. And see where it got him.

My question is and always has been: Why? You say that this man wants to be married and have a family, but it doesn't seem that that's what he really wants. It's sooo sad that he has to hide and lie to himself because of what others think he should be. Yes, he should come out, for his own sake and the sake of his poor family. He needs to be comfortable in his own skin. If he were a straight man, he would be paying a female hooker like swaggart did. He's gay, and he's hiding behind the bible. Sad thing is he could accept the bible and still be true to himself. And maybe in the process find a nice man to love forever, not just someone to screw behind dark curtains.

Can you understand that for Haggard, SSA's are dark and repulsive -- and he has no desire to be gay? Look, Swaggart knew that his pornographic desires were wrong, he simply failed to subdue them. Why can't the same thing be true of Haggard in terms of his SSA? And wny not, at least, say that he's bisexual? Why do so many in the gay communinity insist that he's gay?

Many guys who perform in gay porn films are heterosexual, including the much lusted after Jeff Stryker. They do it for the big bucks. And no they still have ZERO interest in men sexually; some/many people can psych themselves up to have sex in a convincing way with people for whom they have NO attraction. This does not change their sexual orientation; which as we know from REAL science cannot be altered; suppressed---yes, altered---no; despite the protestations from 'anonymous' and others who practice fundamentalist churchianity. I refuse to call them Christians, because they're NOT!

Anonymous, let me put in my two cents.
The key word isn't same sex attraction.
The key word is 'unwanted'.

The initial feelings of attraction towards one's same sex isn't a matter of wanted or not wanted, but a condition not guided by morals or instructed in any way.
The unwanted part, is essentially unwanted by HETEROSEXUALS.
Who condition the gay young person to not want it either.
And this unwantedness is based on religious ideology, NOT reality.
The myth of mutable homosexuality or homosexuality as a sin is an artifice created by HETEROSEXUALS to comfort themselves, NOT the gay person.
To create loathing of homosexuality. Within and without.
To reinforce their commitment to heterosexual supremacy, NOT morality.
It is CONTROL of gay people, simply that.

But the key to this whole issue really is, for WHOSE purpose?
Who does it really serve that gay people fake being straight?

Straight people FORCE gay men and women into believing being gay is unwanted, undesirable by using the language of gloom and doom to exact the STRAIGHT agenda.

That is to say, now BE HONEST.
What this really is about is straight people want gays and lesbians to pay a perpetual debt to straight supremacy and call it paying God's due.

But God isn't the one making the demand, PEOPLE are.
It's long past time the straight world DID deal with reality.
For these reasons:

1. Being gay is not as bad, nor are gay people as bad as they keep saying.

2. Nothing really good has come from forcing the maintenance of this lie.

3. There are far worse and more pressing issues out there than whether or not someone is same sex attracted. Let them have their companions, WHO DOES IT HURT, really?
REALLY?

4. As a straight woman, I'm sick and tired myself of straight people that can't place themselves in the skin of gay people and for ONCE in their lives ASSUME that being gay is as fixed as being straight is and try to imagine what it would take for YOU to turn GAY!
And what would YOU put up with and for how long if you had to really deal with what gay people have suffered from the straight.

5. Unless and until there will be those straights out there with the stones enough to wear their gay and lesbian family's skin for REAL!

Screaming shut the fuck up is stupid. But understandable. Anyhow, so what if someone wants to change. I have brown hair and color it. It is straight and I add a wave every few months. I am naturally prone to carrying a few extra pounds and diet & exericse to keep it off. I take medication for a genetic trait that makes life a bit easier. So what if someone has unwanted homosexuality. Why can't they decide what religion, what belief system, what course of action to take for their own life????? Just as you as a black woman can't stand it when white men have made decisions for you - don't you think you should stand by the same standard. I can't stand the religious zealots who throw their children into "gay changing" camps or programs either. Nor can I stand it when christian republicans tell me how to vote. Nor can I barely tolerate the gays who think they have the market on understanding diversity. And as an ADULT we all have the right to choose what path we will take. It's the programs like Fof that impose on children - but they are not my children.

Now that our side has a majority in both houses they should actually USE the subpeona power and launch a REAL independent investigation into 9/11.

One thing that struck me as odd in the days after 9/11 was Bush saying "We will not tolerate conspiracy theories [regarding 9/11]". Sure enough there have been some wacky conspiracy theories surrounding the events of that day. The most far-fetched and patently ridiculous one that I've ever heard goes like this: Nineteen hijackers who claimed to be devout Muslims but yet were so un-Muslim as to be getting drunk all the time, doing cocaine and frequenting strip clubs decided to hijack four airliners and fly them into buildings in the northeastern U.S., the area of the country that is the most thick with fighter bases. After leaving a Koran on a barstool at a strip bar after getting shitfaced drunk on the night before, then writing a suicide note/inspirational letter that sounded like it was written by someone with next to no knowledge of Islam, they went to bed and got up the next morning hung over and carried out their devious plan. Nevermind the fact that of the four "pilots" among them there was not a one that could handle a Cessna or a Piper Cub let alone fly a jumbo jet, and the one assigned the most difficult task of all, Hani Hanjour, was so laughably incompetent that he was the worst fake "pilot" of the bunch. Nevermind the fact that they received very rudimentary flight training at Pensacola Naval Air Station, making them more likely to have been C.I.A. assets than Islamic fundamentalist terrorists. So on to the airports. These "hijackers" somehow managed to board all four airliners with their tickets, yet not even ONE got his name on any of the flight manifests. So they hijack all four airliners and at this time passengers on United 93 start making a bunch of cell phone calls from 35,000 feet in the air to tell people what was going on. Nevermind the fact that cell phones wouldn't work very well above 4,000 feet, and wouldn't work at ALL above 8,000 feet. But the conspiracy theorists won't let that fact get in the way of a good fantasy. That is one of the little things you "aren't supposed to think about". Nevermind that one of the callers called his mom and said his first and last name, more like he was reading from a list than calling his own mom. Anyway, when these airliners each deviated from their flight plan and didn't respond to ground control, NORAD would any other time have followed standard operating procedure (and did NOT have to be told by F.A.A. that there were hijackings because they were watching the same events unfold on their own radar) which means fighter jets would be scrambled from the nearest base where they were available on standby within a few minutes, just like every other time when airliners stray off course. But of course on 9/11 this didn't happen, not even close. Somehow these "hijackers" must have used magical powers to cause NORAD to stand down, as ridiculous as this sounds because total inaction from the most high-tech and professional Air Force in the world would be necessary to carry out their tasks. So on the most important day in its history the Air Force was totally worthless. Then they had to make one of the airliners look like a smaller plane, because unknown to them the Naudet brothers had a videocamera to capture the only known footage of the North Tower crash, and this footage shows something that is not at all like a jumbo jet, but didn't have to bother with the South Tower jet disguising itself because that was the one we were "supposed to see". Anyway, as for the Pentagon they had to have Hani Hanjour fly his airliner like it was a fighter plane, making a high G-force corkscrew turn that no real airliner can do, in making its descent to strike the Pentagon. But these "hijackers" wanted to make sure Rumsfeld survived so they went out of their way to hit the farthest point in the building from where Rumsfeld and the top brass are located. And this worked out rather well for the military personnel in the Pentagon, since the side that was hit was the part that was under renovation at the time with few military personnel present compared to construction workers. Still more fortuitous for the Pentagon, the side that was hit had just before 9/11 been structurally reinforced to prevent a large fire there from spreading elsewhere in the building. Awful nice of them to pick that part to hit, huh? Then the airliner vaporized itself into nothing but tiny unidentifiable pieces most no bigger than a fist, unlike the crash of a real airliner when you will be able to see at least some identifiable parts, like crumpled wings, broken tail section etc. Why, Hani Hanjour the terrible pilot flew that airliner so good that even though he hit the Pentagon on the ground floor the engines didn't even drag the ground!! Imagine that!! Though the airliner vaporized itself on impact it only made a tiny 16 foot hole in the building. Amazing. Meanwhile, though the planes hitting the Twin Towers caused fires small enough for the firefighters to be heard on their radios saying "We just need 2 hoses and we can knock this fire down" attesting to the small size of it, somehow they must have used magical powers from beyond the grave to make this morph into a raging inferno capable of making the steel on all forty-seven main support columns (not to mention the over 100 smaller support columns) soften and buckle, then all fail at once. Hmmm. Then still more magic was used to make the building totally defy physics as well as common sense in having the uppermost floors pass through the remainder of the building as quickly, meaning as effortlessly, as falling through air, a feat that without magic could only be done with explosives. Then exactly 30 minutes later the North Tower collapses in precisely the same freefall physics-defying manner. Incredible. Not to mention the fact that both collapsed at a uniform rate too, not slowing down, which also defies physics because as the uppermost floors crash into and through each successive floor beneath them they would shed more and more energy each time, thus slowing itself down. Common sense tells you this is not possible without either the hijackers' magical powers or explosives. To emphasize their telekinetic prowess, later in the day they made a third building, WTC # 7, collapse also at freefall rate though no plane or any major debris hit it. Amazing guys these magical hijackers. But we know it had to be "Muslim hijackers" the conspiracy theorist will tell you because (now don't laugh) one of their passports was "found" a couple days later near Ground Zero, miraculously "surviving" the fire that we were told incinerated planes, passengers and black boxes, and also "survived" the collapse of the building it was in. When common sense tells you if that were true then they should start making buildings and airliners out of heavy paper and plastic so as to be "indestructable" like that magic passport. The hijackers even used their magical powers to bring at least seven of their number back to life, to appear at american embassies outraged at being blamed for 9/11!! BBC reported on that and it is still online. Nevertheless, they also used magical powers to make the american government look like it was covering something up in the aftermath of this, what with the hasty removal of the steel debris and having it driven to ports in trucks with GPS locators on them, to be shipped overseas to China and India to be melted down. When common sense again tells you that this is paradoxical in that if the steel was so unimportant that they didn't bother saving some for analysis but so important as to require GPS locators on the trucks with one driver losing his job because he stopped to get lunch. Hmmmm. Further making themselves look guilty, the Bush administration steadfastly refused for over a year to allow a commission to investigate 9/11 to even be formed, only agreeing to it on the conditions that they get to dictate its scope, meaning it was based on the false pretense of the "official story" being true with no other alternatives allowed to be considered, handpicked all its members making sure the ones picked had vested interests in the truth remaining buried, and with Bush and Cheney only "testifying" together, only for an hour, behind closed doors, with their attorneys present and with their "testimonies" not being recorded by tape or even written down in notes. Yes, this whole story smacks of the utmost idiocy and fantastic far-fetched lying, but it is amazingly enough what some people believe. Even now, five years later, the provably false fairy tale of the "nineteen hijackers" is heard repeated again and again, and is accepted without question by so many Americans. Which is itself a testament to the innate psychological cowardice of the American sheeple, i mean people, and their abject willingness to believe something, ANYTHING, no matter how ridiculous in order to avoid facing a scary uncomfortable truth. Time to wake up America.
