(Weekly Column)

My last request in 2006 is that sleazy right wing preachers, especially in Colorado, will put aside their "Do Me," list so I can finish my "To Do" list. How many times will I have to blow off my busy work and write a press release about some homophobic holy man getting busy in search of a release? When will these men learn that their hypocritical happy endings with hookers will never end happily?

Mainstream Americans hopefully figured out in 2006 that the closet affects everyone. Evangelicals, in particular, must now come to grips with the fact they have no grip on reality. If the Village People ever reunited, they would add one more campy character to the line-up - a right wing preacher.

Much of the credit for discrediting the right wing goes to Mike Rogers, who has done more outings than a summer camp counselor. The enterprising activist has been a one-man wrecking crew and single handedly brought the GOP to its knees. Well, many of its members were already in this position, but Mike has brightly shone a spotlight on such hypocrisy and for this we should be grateful.

What I like best about Mike is his creativity and chutzpa. For example, this week he released a video where he and another advocate walked into the Republican National Committee to confront Ken Mehlman, the RNC chief, about his alleged homosexuality. Not surprisingly, they had a door slammed in their faces and were escorted from the building.

Nonetheless, this has to keep creeps, like Mehlman, up at night and lets them know that they get no free pass for their self-loathing homophobia. The price for being a modern day Roy Cohn is confrontation and exposure.

Another hero of 2006 is Lane Hudson, the former Human Rights Campaign staffer who posted the first set of Mark Foley emails on his blog. As a result, he lost his job, which is unfortunate, because our movement needs more bold and brave people, such as Hudson. While he may have lost his career, he did gain the admiration of countless people. More important, his contribution played a key role in returning Congress to the Democrats.

John Aravosis, the founder of Americablog, deserves recognition as well. This year, he solidified himself as one of this nation's most prominent bloggers. He has now joined Andrew Sullivan as an elite gay newsmaker who has crossed over to yield considerable influence in the debate over today's leading issues. Likewise, John Byrne, founder of Raw Story, deserves our respect for his ascension into this pantheon of pundits.

The web has also led to the explosion of online entrepreneurs who have demonstrably strengthened the GLBT movement. Strong voices have emerged from blogs such as Pam's House Blend, founded by Pam Spaulding, and Jeremy Hooper's humorous site, Good As You.

In 2006, the web also fostered the rise of what I refer to as the Truth Movement, where fundamentalist propaganda is vociferously challenged. The right wing "God Squad" is finally being held accountable for their lies by gadflies who no longer let them dehumanize GLBT people without suffering the consequences. Truth Wins Out's recent video of a scientist refuting James Dobson's misuse of her research is just one example.

The Truth Movement includes Mike Airhart, founder of the site Ex-Gay Watch, as well as Internet sleuths, such as Joe Brummer and Jim Burroway. While many people might not be familiar with these advocates, they are the movement's fact checkers who play this game as if it were chess.

In terms of establishment advocacy, the GLBT community has much to be proud of. Under the leadership of Joe Solmonese, the Human Rights Campaign performed admirably in this year's elections. Matt Foreman, of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, has established himself as a voice of passion and emerged as a formidable leader. His words reverberate, which is a refreshing change from the poll-tested pabulum we are too often spoon-fed from our political organizations.

Another advance in 2006 was the growth of gay spiritual groups that are working to wrest back control of the Bible from extremists. Furniture mogul Mitchell Gold is leading the way with his tremendous new organization Faith in America. SoulForce's Jeff Lutes also deserves credit for the highly successful Equality Ride.

Finally, philanthropists such as Tim Gill, the Gill Foundation, and Jon Stryker, the Arcus Foundation, are the engines behind much of the GLBT movement's recent progress. Through their incredible generosity many gay organizations are finally on equal footing with our opponents.

Well, 2007 is nearly here and it has to be better than 2006, if only, because we know that former Sens. Rick Santorum and George Allen are on Monster.com looking for new jobs. And, we are one year closer to the end of the Bush error, I mean era. Hold that pleasant thought and have a very happy new year!

"...he released a video where he and another advocate walked into the Republican National Committee to confront Ken Mehlman, the RNC chief, about his alleged homosexuality. Not surprisingly, they had a door slammed in their faces and were escorted from the building." This is indeed unsurprising - it's what most reasonable people would do to someone who behaved in such an intrusive and obnoxious way.

I guess a man and his party who constantly bash, demonize and discriminate against the same group that this man belongs to *isnt* obnoxious and intrusive into OUR lives?! Yes, and Rosa Parks was being obnoxious when she refused to move to the back of the bus!

Ain't that the damn truth! Why is it, if a gay man speaks up for himself or his brothers/sisters, he is being "obnoxious" and "intrusive", but if a hetero breeder does the same thing, he/she is just fulfulling his/her "right to express his/her opinion"? Sounds like a crock of sh-- to me!!

Busses are public places. The headquarters of the Republican National Committee is a private building. There is no comparison. The only thing the person who 'confronted' Mehlman proved is that he is a jerk.
posted by Anonymous Anonymous, at 12/24/2006 3:13 PM

Hey stupid ass, Mellman got a bunch of pricks elected that run our nation's PUBLIC policy. You know, the schmucks who make the laws that keep gays as second class citizens. That's even more public than a bus, since these laws affect all people while mainly poor folks ride the bus.

So, shit-for-brains - it is a public matter. God damn, some people should not state opinions because they are too fucking stupid. Just because the Internet allows you to easily make an asshole of yourself, does not mean you have to take advantage of the opportunity.

Sammy, do you think that if you ever do something that has consequences for the public, people have the right to 'confront' you about it in private, such as at your house or in a building you own or work in? Legally, I don't think it works that way. In any case, 'confronting' Mehlman achieved absolutely nothing for gay people.

Wayne,

I hope you had a happy Chanukah. For all who celebrate Christmas, have a merry one. And best wishes for all of us for the New Year, obnoxious or not.

How about confronting the voters?? Unfortunately, gay people know that the majority of voters are against them - but that is truly where the issue lies. You either need to change public opinions about gays and homosexuality or live as second class citizens. Confronting one man on private property is ... well... idiotic. It proves that you are either willing to disrupt the very private lives that you so demand or are just a bully and now put on the "don't let him in" list. Sorry, the fight for civil rights is hard. Oh - yeah and people respect you more when you don't trespass.
posted by Anonymous Anonymous, at 12/25/2006 2:09 PM

Bullshit...some one should slug Ken in the mouth. People ought to start fearing us, as they do other miniorities. Our timidity allows human scum like Mehlman to exist. A few confrontations would make him change his low life career path.

And no, the public has no more right to decie gay issues than it has the right to decide the "place" of blacks. Human rights are not left up to the fucked up majority...sorry, but that is not how we do it in America and other free countries.

So, eat my fat, dimpled, stinky, unwiped, ripe ass scumshit fuckwad. Please state you name, so I can confront you in public and see if you like it. You propably won't becasue you are a coward and a pussey.

Merry Christmas Motherfucker.

I don't post my name because gay extremist can be violent ( please see your own post) And though I support gay marriage, am an ex-gay and a christian, gays seem to hate me verymuch. Hmmmm. And yes, appraently the general public does not think well of gays - I wonder if your kind of thinking, acting and posting has anything to do with it. For now - I'll just call it displaced anger. But wouldn't that be frightening to anyone (even gays or blacks in the historically past south???)

Take responsibility for the actions of your community and quit advocating violence, threats etc...

You are neither ex-gay (they dont exist) nor christian. If you were either of those, you wouldnt be reading this blog nor bending over backwards (the opposite way you usually bend over) to defend scumsucking republican gay bashing hypocrites. As SCIENCE and Wayne and a panoply of 'disgraced' evangelical ministers have proven--you cant pray away the gay! It's here to stay, not go find a hot guy and have a roll in the hay.

You are simply a repressed queer obsessed with gay websites, because you are too much of a coward to go out and get what you truly desire. In short, you have hangups and are a severly demented and ill shell of a person. As a Christian, I weep for you.

1. I am not a man

2. I don't hate gay people or advocate for laws against gay marriages

3. You should pray for more people like myself who help and protect gay lives even though we are different.

4. If I was trolling about don't you think I would go to a gay bar, gay political fund raiser, or women's site for that???

Your first clue that you are making assumptions should be that you think you know me at all.

Ex-gay is a political term that causes suspician and hostility in most gay people. But you know this already. Why you continue to use the terminology that you know will cause people to lash out at you is beyond me. But I will not continue to beat that dead horse. I do want to bring to your attention, the nature of activism. Since the civil rights movement, and the anti-war movement of the 60's and early 70's, activists have been downright disruptive. And it has worked. And it will continue to work, as long as activists have the stomach for it. I watched my mother and a group of activists sit in the middle of a busy intersection and stop traffic until the police came and dragged them away, in protest of nuclear bombs. Was it obnoxious? Of course. Did it do anything? Yes it did. It brought publicity to the cause. I am a die hard believer in a woman's right to reproductive choice, including the choice to abort. I abhor the activists who block clinics and confront women trying to enter. But it's ingenious. Is it obnoxious? Of course it is. Does it piss people off? Damn right. But it works. And that is the job of every activist who is worth his or her weight. Sitting on the sidelines singing kumbaya doesn't get the job done. Only and "in your face" attitude and the balls to confront, and stand toe to toe with the oppressors gets the job done. Miss Manners can play no role in Activism. So yes, we should walk up to people's front door and ring the bell. Or carry picket signs outside the walk in front of their house. And if we get arrested, so much the better. More publicity for the cause. I don't believe in violence as an answer, I was not raised that way. But I applaud the intestinal fortitude of Mike Rogers, who has the guts to walk into the RNC and confront a supposed closeted oppressor. The cause needs more activists of this caliber. And I applaud Wayne in all of his efforts. Especially when he gets rude and obnoxious. It's the nature of the beast. My parents are wonderful people, but at a protest or rally, they are totally insane. And you know what, the Viet Nam war ended, a nuclear bomb hasn't been dropped since the 40's, and people of all nationalities and races have equal status in this nation, at least on paper. Only GLBT men and women are still second class citizens. I hope Gay activists continue to be obnoxious and rude, in order to get things done.
posted by Blogger jekelhyde, at 12/26/2006 9:15 PM

It won't work in this case - being rude. Gays have to be above the standrards.
posted by Anonymous Anonymous, at 12/26/2006 10:18 PM

I remember activism from the gay perpsective. We had to be above reproach. That still stands true today. And never did I nor do I now believe that acting "out" (no pun intended) was the way to get things done. It was done by being outstanding citizens and proving our value and worth. While in a perfect world no one should have to do that - we are all entitled to freedom and happiness. But this is not a perfect world (remember the blacks had to wear better cloths and get better grades and prove and prove and prove and prove)

As for using the term ex gay - what term should I use? It is a political term but IT IS ALSO a term that those of us who used to be gay and are not gay anymore use to identify our change. Of course, I don't go around introducing myself as such (as I am just a woman like any other) but I do use it when people need to know. Gays and conservative fundamentalist christinns need to know that we do exist and that not everyone of us is a narrow minded, brain washed, hate monger. Some of us truly are the good guys. So - JH - I will use the term. You may not like - I don't really like it either - but it has a use and a purpose. That's activism for you.

Anonymous at 11:25 and before: You have previously alluded on Wayne's Blog to having changed in sexual desire.

Previously you indicated that this happened involuntarily, rather than by any clinical intervention.

Previously I asked if you would be willing to correspond further about this, privately and with the assurance of confidentiality. You have been unwilling to do so.

It would be most interesting if you could describe the timescale in which the reported change of sexual feeling took place, and how you found yourself looking for the first time at the opposite sex with sexual desire.

Also, since you previously reported that your own change was involuntary and not the result of any "therapy", it would be most interesting to hear your views on whether it is possible to change desire deliberately.

Or do you feel, since your own reported change of desire was apparently accidental, that the whole "reparative therapy" industry, and the many "ministries" aimed at DELIBERATE change, are a waste of time and money?

Can you appreciate that unless you are able to give more details on such matters respecting your own reported change, your comments on here will be met with justified scepticism, and cannot be regarded as credible evidence?

Wayne,
You may or may not be aware of the New Jersey radio talk show host, Halk Turner. He is an outspoken white supremacist, advocating violence to minorities [and gays], murder etc. What began as simply a few prank calls has escalated to a full scale and very vocal opposition to his ideas and hate-mongering. After the prank calls to his phone, he published the number of several prank callers, encouraging his listeners to violence against them, some of them minors and these numbers were later translated into addresses by his fanbase. This angered the callers, and the conflict escalated, as many of them began downloading files Hal is hosting on his website which in turn caused the website to become inaccessible. Hal's next step was to personally threaten physical harm and death in the comment section of his website during a time where it was accessible. At some point he decided to redirect all of his website traffic to fbi.gov, in an attempt to make it look like the FBI was helping him. When he stopped this, he claimed that one of the prank callers had been sought out by his friends, and posted an image of a young man with blood in his face. This later turned out to be a hoax, as the image came from a completely unrelated website.

I have to disagree with the assessment that we can or should be somehow more docile than the activists of the past. If the riots at Stonewall had never happened, we wouldn't be half as far as we are today. Again, I don't condone violence, but I will make a broad statement that the Black Panther party did as much for the civil rights movement as MLK. They shared like ideals, just different methods. Both methods worked. The Chicago Seven was obnoxious and intrusive, and they got things done by making things impossible. Activism is what it is. My mother used to get up into the faces of the police and call them pigs. My father would offer to pray for them. My father's approach seemed to often piss them off more. You can claim all you want that we should take the high road. I, personally, have most always taken the high road and try, for the most part, to give people the benefit of the doubt. But I am not an activist. I don't have the stomach for it. But that doesn't mean that I don't admire the people who have the guts to fight my fight for me.

As for you referring to yourself as ex-gay, I don't personally care. You can call yourself a fruitfly if you feel like it. All I am saying is that when you use a term that is primarily used for attempting to shut down the rights of GLBT people, you shouldn't be surprised or offended when people get angry and don't see you as sincere. Many GLBT people have been duped and hurt by the ex-gay movement. Those people will especially be hostile toward you. And again, I say, I do believe that a small number of people can change orientation. But I don't think that the majority of them call themselves ex-gay. They refer to themselves as the orientation they are now. This is simply a theory. Since you are the only person with no political agenda I have ever heard utter the term in reference to themselves, I have to believe that most "Changed" individuals do not call themselves ex-gay. I won't ask you to provide examples to the contrary. But if another ex-gay shows up in a minute to contradict me, I will become extremely paranoid.

Weell JH, I'm sure you know a lot of ex gays who don't call themselves ex gays. We don't go around campaigning about it. A lot of my friends who are ex gay wonder where all the ex gays are. Isn't that a hoot! Not everyone is so political or cares to make a stand. it is too bad that the only one's you usually hear about are against gay marriages. BTW, you ought to pick any of the author Stephanie Coontz's books. She is really great and explains in detail the history of marriage. Very excellent and powerful words for those who support gay marriages.
posted by Anonymous Anonymous, at 12/27/2006 8:48 PM

It isn't just gay marriage, though. All people, except for you, who claim ex-gay are totally anti-gay. Or the ones who advertise, I should say. Which is why, you, who advertises your "ex-gayness" is met with such hostility and anger. Hey, I invented a new word. "Ex-gayness."

BTW, in speaking of gay marriage, the best thing I've read in a long time was written by Timothy Kincaid on the exgaywatch.com blog regarding what the Bible says about marriage. I was blessed by with having a father who is a christian minister and who loves me as I am, queer as a three dollar bill. Too many people of religious upbringing are hurt by it. Timothy Kincaid's well thought out and researched post on Biblical marriage is fantastic. I wish the heirarchy of the right would surf the good gay websites more often.

This issue of Ex-gays is starting to get to me, I have before gone through the thoughts of becoming Ex-gay,not that I am ashamed of being attracted to the same sex but becasue of how tough it is to be gay but after giving it some thought and going to gay christian sites as well talking to people,I realized I need to be who I am and that I can't just deny my sexual desires just because society has'nt cought up to the idea that GLBT are real people to. If your gay, love and be happy with who you are, you don't need to change.

Anon, I'm astounded by your statement "we don't go around campaigning about it."

Well, perhaps YOU and your circle may not, but there is a HUGE campaign by ex gays to insinuate their weak theories and lies on other gay people and the general public.
I have been annoyed by this behavior. As a straight woman, the 'straightness' that is claimed, doesn't ring true to me, nor can to what degree this straightness manifests can be proven or laid out to the public.

Marriage to the opposite sex doesn't prove it, bearing children doesn't prove it, and celibacy doesn't either.
So how can one's new found heterosexuality possibly be qualified?
One's word against the other, is what it's down to, and those ex gay claims are further bolstered by blanketing the entire gay population with an utter lack of self control, or ability to commit, unless one is straight.

Which makes no sense, because heterosexuality isn't a virtue.
It's a state of being, same as homosexuality.
Two sides of the same coin, one is no less than the other.

Also as a straight woman, I know that one KNOWS exactly how it feels to be attracted...period.
There are qualities in gay folks that do appeal to us straight folks, but that has little to do with sex.
But I submit that the emotional and spiritual bond that can form between gay folks and straight folks IS the precious gift.
Believe me, it's a RELIEF to be able to have all the benefits of a male in my life, without the inevitable sexual tension that can form with a straight male.

I find it utterly sad, that this particular form of bond, isn't respected and encouraged, because we NEED it.
I've mentioned before and it's obvious, that men and women, the world over do NOT get along well.
And religious communities in particular do not and cannot respect individual character, but seek to relegate people into strict, artificial roles according to their gender.
THAT is what is unnatural, and quite brutal.
I can't appreciate a chronically misunderstood minority, is kept FROM being understood by the lies and interventions of the ex gay movement.
I wish the ex gay people and the straight people who encourage this mess, would get out of the way of this MUCH needed understanding and knowledge.
Identity is one of the most powerful things we have as individuals.

Flagrant disrespect for the identity of gay people has had NO positive results and a world full of nothing but straight people would bore the hell out of me.
Gay people do not owe straight people a damn thing.
Only the truth of who they are.
But too often, straight people don't really want to know, but find gay folks compelling nonetheless.
My question continues to go unanswered, especially by the very people who claim to know gay people best, the ex gays.
And my question is this:
How can anyone know so much about what they don't want to know, nor want others to know?

Regan that many people are just turned off by gays and want to dismiss their value, feelings, love for others etc....

I happen to NOT be one of those people. I'm not going to get into a long discussion about what it means to be gay or straight or ex gay or whatever because the truth is - it REALLY is different for everyone. I can't define you and you would be hard pressed to define me.

My goal here is to stand and be counted as an ex gay who supports gay rights and marriages and doesn't hate gay people. There are others who need to be couragoeus and come forward.
posted by Anonymous Anonymous, at 12/31/2006 1:52 PM

But that's the crux, isn't it. As long as you continue to label yourself "Ex-gay" you will to continue to stigmatize yourself within the gay community. And you will unconsciously allow the right to use you.
posted by Blogger jekelhyde, at 12/31/2006 3:22 PM

No. If I hide, the right will continue to use all ex gays for their exploitive purposes. If I deny that I am ex gay then gays will always call me gay if I talk about a gay past. Being misunderstood for not speaking up is cowardly. Being misunderstood because I have spoken is ignorance on someone else. And it makes it obvious.

OK, too much.

Good luck on losing your weight. My sister had great luck with Nutri-System and Curves. Her husband walked out on her and she ate herself to an additional 20 pounds. She lost 30.
