(Weekly Column)I have finally developed a grudging respect for Focus on the Family. The ease in which they lie is so remarkably breathtaking, all one can do is applaud in wondrous awe. Not even Condi Rice or Dick Cheney can compete with this motley crew when it comes to fibbing with a straight face.
What amazes me is that Focus on the Family raises approximately $200 million a year but produces virtually nothing. It's the empire built on bunk and a monstrous Machiavellian monstrosity that manipulates and vituperates but doesn't generate. Indeed, the organization's "scientific" apparatus consists of a few fundamentalist flunkies who couldn't tell a research trial from the Anna Nicole Smith trial.
For example,
Gay.com reported on an obscure new study that found 16% of same sex relationships in China suffer from domestic abuse, while only 9% of opposite sex couples do. The study, reportedly conducted by GLBT civil rights groups, found that the most common form of abuse followed threats of outing a partner to employers or family members. In other words, the blackmail situations the closet creates, leads to an increase in domestic violence. Without the closet factor, such violence would likely decrease.
This would be common sense to any reasonably intelligent person analyzing such a study. It is even more obvious to anyone remotely familiar with conservative Asian culture and the consequences one faces if outed. Of course, the "geniuses" at Focus on the Family had their
own "brilliant" take on the situation.
"Rather than use the research to point out a basic flaw with homosexuality, activists are attacking social service agencies in China with not being equipped to deal with gay violence issues," wrote Josh Montez in Family News in Focus.
His article went on to quote a few wing nuts that drew some interesting assumptions.
"It reinforces the fact that same-sex relationships do not work and that you cannot substitute the love and interaction that you need from same-sex parents and peers by getting involved in a same-sex relationship," said Regina Griggs, executive director of Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays.
"I think these are folks with issues that are unresolved and part of that is going to come out in anger and it's going to be directed at the people closest to you," said Linda Harvey with Mission America. (Because, of course, there are no angry heterosexuals - like Osama or Mike Tyson)
"Often times, especially in the male community, drugs and alcohol play a factor because there are high rates of depression among homosexual men and women," said Matt Barber with Concerned Women for America.
It is incomprehensible that these luminaries extrapolated such conclusions from a shaky study reportedly conducted by activists. This was hardly the kind of research where one can draw such sweeping, broad deductions about an entire class of people.
Even if the statistics are completely accurate, it still means that 84% of gay couples, vs. 91% of heterosexual couples do not engage in domestic violence - an overwhelming majority in both communities. (Did these 84% of gay people have their needs met and issues resolved? Maybe Griggs' gay son can answer that question?)
More surreal is that Matt Barber gratuitously throws drugs into the mix while commenting on the Chinese study. Perhaps he is aware of ecstasy-fueled gay raves in Beijing that the rest of us in the GLBT community are not privy to. Or, maybe he has just added the "Year of the Ass" to the Chinese animal zodiac chart. It is abundantly clear that his comments were a cheap smear. Kind of like the gay community saying the NASA chick in the diapers represents heterosexuality.
This diabolical discourse is not surprising. What is a bit shocking, however, is that the "Focus on the Fallacies" article came out on a day when the gay rights organizations Truth Wins Out and SoulForce held a
joint-media conference to highlight right wing distortions of legitimate research.
Yet, even as we set the record straight on old studies, Focus on the Family twisted and mangled new ones. Batting down lies against this group is like swatting flies in a manure field. To fight back, Truth Wins Out unveiled its new website
www.RespectMyResearch.org.
The site offers scientists a place to report right wing misrepresentations of their work. Hopefully, we can embarrass the truth challenged and make a powerful case to the so-called liberal media to stop liberally quoting serial shredders of the truth.
Still, it remains to be seen if the media is willing to kick its habit of providing a Volkswagen for the very entertaining right wing clowns who boost their cable television ratings. Or, is it possible to shame a group as astonishingly shameless as Focus on the Family?

Wayne,
The fundies have their hands full at this time with the news of the lost tomb of Jesus Christ, see article:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17328478/site/newsweek/
At the moment they are busy disproving the archelogical find and giving us a recess. But not for long. Focus on the Family will probably spend some time and money focusing on the 10 bone reliquary boxes from Jerusalem and then come back to us. The Catholic Church will spend more time and money defending the ressurection and Mary's ascension to heaven before continuing its war against us gays. They have to defend their investments. My only comment to the fundies is: try reading and then living by what is printed in red in the New Testament (Jesus's words) and kiss the rest goodbye? See how it goes, you might like it!

Actually, the gay community is amazingly peaceful considering how we've been treated over the centuries. I've read that police officers like doing security for gay pride events the most, because they have the least amount of problems to deal with (except for the occasional lustful stare).
With the hetero divorce rate up around 50%, Fokkkus on the Addams Family should put their own filthy glass house in order before they throw bullshit at ours!

I'm sure you've seen this, and it's not directly related to the study from China, but I thought it might be worth noting that the abuse of science by evangelicals bothers some christians, too:
www.christianitytoday.com/bc/2007/001/5.11.html
That article presents a fairly sensible view but perhaps more interesting is this rather frank comment I recently ran across in an old AFA article:
"This exposes the glaring weakness in a Christian community that relies so heavily on "science," or the opinion of various scientific "professionals," to legitimize its arguments. It may be one thing to bolster an argument with scientific evidence, but for the Christian, God is the final authority."
I was just stunned to see the author of the article put quotation marks around the word "science." Not because I was surprised at the sentiment (that "science" may be useful if it bolsters one's arguments but can be ignored when it conflicts with one's beliefs) but because it seemed unusual to find such an unambiguous statement of the position. Maybe I just don't read enough of this stuff, is it common to see xtians dismiss science in this way?

Why did FOTF even go so far as to cite a foreign culture, Communist no less...to ascribe the same to gays here as well?
I already told several people there, and local homophobic ministers to check with the local law enforcement officers on who commits the most acts of violence, domestic and between strangers.
And what parents are the most abusive to their own children.
Working for the LAPD forensic photo unit, and the ability to access the databases in our agency allowed me to put cred on what I had to say.
Wayne is correct that often couples have disparate ability to come out. Or get help for their interpersonal relationships in conflict.
Counseling or support for a relationship is not a general option, so if there are difficulties that go unresolved...FOTF or the Heritage Foundation can easily blame orientation, it's convenient to do so.
Rather than blame the cultural hostility against gay people.
And of course, citing relationship SUCCESS of gays and lesbiand despite the cultural climate, it's not mentioned by these people at all.
Gays and lesbians, as far as a violent criminal class are concerned...are beyond the pale.
My own look at the crime blotter reveals, that the biggest reasons for arrests...are non violent, such a possession of small amounts of illegal substances, or financial fraud.
However, what stats on assaults are there, are intra gay. Gay on gay assault, but as far as gay on STRAIGHT, that's virtually non existent.
Gays are more VICTIMS of crime. Armed robbery, rape, assault and homicide...and the perpetrators almost all identify as heterosexual.
Our agencies, LAPD..as well as LA County Sheriff's Dept. started keeping records on orientation over thirty years ago.
So when it comes to who should fear who, who is more likely to commit a violent crime, who abuses their own children, who makes up the majority of gang terrorists in any given city in America...straight folks should be cleaning up their own act.
EVERYBODY should be afraid of straight people.

What is truly sad is that we have to hear about the misrepresenation of research by FOF on the Internet. The Fundies repeatedly scream "Liberal Media" however, they are more often than not, unchallenged when doing TV interviews (well unless its on Fox, then they are congratulated).
Our entertainment media is liberal, our news media is not and never has been.

Regan, I agree with you entirely, everybody should be afraid of straight people. Not only do they hold the monopoly on crime of every kind, but also they are the ones who perpetrate wars, genocide and torture. The Catholic church also promotes death by refusing to allow condom distribution in third world countries where they have missionaries and where AIDS is pandemic, overwhelmingly heterosexually contracted. So maybe Focus on the Family and all the other right-wing zealots should be going after their own hetero adherents instead of using as as their scapegoats for all of societies' ills. It is so transparent what they are doing.

There's another reason I think you would expect higher rates of domestic abuse - or at least physical fighting - in the gay and lesbian community: the lack of taboos on same-sex violence. Nearly every boy is raised not to hit girls (not that it stops domestic abuse, mind you), but boy-boy and girl-girl fights are far more acceptable and accepted. Also, there is an open question as to whether the power imbalance that is typical in straight domestic violence situations exists in same-sex. In the typical wife-beating situation, the man does not simply physically dominate the woman, but also psychologically - controlling money, access to friends and family, etc. I don't know if research has been done on the topic, but I would be surprised if that same dynamic exists in same-sex relationships.

I read this statement By Regina Griggs, saying that same sex relationships do now work because,
It could be true in some cases that some gay men hook up with the wrong type of person for whatever reason,But that happens with straight people as well, I know many gay couples who have been togather for so many years and YES! they are happy, true a few may have some small issues But thats only human but hardly ever have I heard of any Domestic Violence.

Hey Anonymous...they ARE private. I had a security code and I am bonded, background checked and had a probationary period.
There are no names mentioned here. No addresses and no places of work
Private and secure as far as identity goes.
But breakdowns on gender, age, orientation, ethnicity, religion, disability, region and times of year and times of day crimes most likely occur is vital for statistical purposes.
After all, the anti gay are bringing up stats all the time, and never mention their resources...or their real motives for detailing their information.
Law enforcement's purposes, are far different than those of groups whose specific aim is to destroy or eliminate the ability for free gay citizens to function in society.
I have revealed no specific gay person's identity, but that I had the ability to study databases from all over the country.
And rather than the homophobic being rest assured that gays and lesbians are NOT the social reprobates they are led to believe (to the danger of gay people or those perceived as gay), they are more interested in maintaining a fiction of homosexual menace.
Which is patently weird. And should be challenged by fair minded people.
Especially fair minded people concerned with violent crime.
My interest in law enforcement and crime goes back to my childhood. I am the daughter of a probation officer.
This preoccupation with making gay people out to be the greatest concern and menace to our society is dangerously stupid.
It will take people like me, with the experience and the information to tell the public the truth.
It's a responsibility, really.
The reckless arrogance, and casual lying and distortions that FOTF, the FRC...and ADF, isn't a matter of inconvenience to gay lives...it's LIFE THREATENING to gay people.
So I have a distinct responsibility to inform as best I can, without compromising confidentiality, to stay informed and say something.
You got a better idea?

You know and have seen as I have, that our dissenters avoid challenge and what honesty will reveal.
Easier to take pots where there will be no actual repercussions.
Easier to vote anonymously on legislation that can make gay life more difficult, but the gay person unable to face who would make it so.
I'm not that kind.
But I do wonder about those we discuss on these blogs, and their fear of real discourse and answering to it.
Alan Chambers did something recently at xgw (and you might have noted that Throckmorton chooses to ignore me altogether), that made me realize not who...but WHAT I was talking to.

And I never said a closeted gay person was wimpy...YOU did.
I do however, consider those who are anti gay, that do not include the gay people or the subject of homosexuality without gay participation weak.
I consider those who refuse to deal with reality and confront their actions against gay people...wimps.
And I consider anonymous people who make hit and run statements, with no intention of serious discourse more of the same.

I will not, nor do I support the outing of a gay and lesbian person.
Unless they are personally and publicly engaged in politics, religious hypocrisy and lawmaking that is destructive and hurtful to gay lives (such as Tim Haggard or Jim West).
They don't get the option of protection where they are attacking others.
And I fully understand the risks involved with young people and their need for privacy, as some are at risk of abandonment or abuse by their parents or religious community for being gay.
You like to bait in blogs and I don't have to take it.
But you are exercise, I can handle you, because you exemplify exactly what I mean, the individual who can't stay around and take the heat.

This isn't about merely name calling someone who 'differs' from me. I'm talking about those who DELIBERATELY lie, distort and misinform so that gay lives are dangerously compromised.
And then run from the consequences of their actions.
If you are offended by my use of the word coward, that's too bad.
Because it's appropriate and accurately descriptive.
When I don't feel like taking this behavior on their part kindly, tough.
People are getting beaten, killed and threatened out there with their children.
Cowards do that to people who are not treating them that way in kind.
If my language and tone is too strong for you, or you're worried about giving offense, sometimes THIS attitude I have is what it takes to wake them up.

"I am neither condemning, nor supporting other groups."
This is for the previous Anonymous, so I don't make this point to the latter. I am assuming you are two different people.
Anonymous, that statement right there shows that you're fence sitting the middle. I can and WILL condemn what I know to be deceit and deliberate distortion of facts DIRECTLY by James Dobson of FOTF. He wrote and article half or misquoting researchers, and when the researchers themselves wanted to meet him to address this, he avoided them, while at the same time, disrespected them personally.
This is not 'good intentions' on the part of FOTF and it's leadership.
I am FAR from misguided, and don't you a fence sitter, scold me on what I do as I am out there confronting this as directly as possible.
You are either ill equipped, or uninterested in doing so and YOUR style is different from mine.
But you have attacked me on something that isn't true, and you've scolded me for accurately describing what the likes of FOTF and LWO do.
So if anyone is in no place to cast stones...that would be YOU.
Now, I can criticize whoever I want, in whatever way I want.
Dobson is uncivil, he refuses to acknowlege the very people whose research he abuses.
Bet you didn't even know that.
Now, unless and until YOU have a BETTER way or ideas of handling this very serious and difficult situation, I suggest you back up off of ME.

Scolding me for name calling, aw gee.
Scolding me for properly getting worked up and pissed at the behavior of FOTF and FRC, et al.
And what have you proven by scolding me?
Not even compassion for my feelings? No understanding about why I would be upset at the indirect results that people like James Dobson causes?
I can't be so free to speak my mind here, without an objection by the likes of YOU?
I know Wayne personally. We're working towards the same goals. It's no wonder that for the most part our respective activity would converge and coordinate.
This is his site, and nobody but YOU has an issue with my use of A name...and an accusation about my use of private information that isn't even correct.
You aren't answering any of my rightfully asked questions about that.
No evidence, just putting a thought out there?
You owe me that if you're going to bother to make the statement. Otherwise, you're being provocative.
It looks like a game you're playing and no one else here will respect what you're doing either.

Okay, how many disapprove or don't isn't important really.
What is, is that you've accused me of something you don't understand or haven't read properly.
I didn't use private information.
I used statistical information. This is actually available to anyone who wants to use it.
But groups like FOTF DON'T, and should. I was pointing out that they say that have truth, stats, numbers and I looked for myself, something they can do as well...and found NOTHING that coincided with what they say.
I can share generalized overviews and breakdowns, such as I did.
It's something important to information on hate crimes and sex crimes, just a divorce stats are important when discussing the issue of marriage. Gay or not.
I couldn't discuss hate crimes, without bringing up the same information.
The FBI puts out such info on their website.
So, GET YOUR FACTS straight before you accuse someone of something.
This is why I don't have a discussion about a subject until I have specific and pertinent information that will help it, and the people whose lives it affects.
It's YOUR logic that doesn't make sense.
You want to come to a gunfight with nothing.
And expect to effect the outcome in a way that's purposeful.
FOTF puts out information that's hurtful and inaccurate and I set the records straight, as any responsible person should.
I ask you again, you got a better idea?
And exactly WHAT private information was revealed that's hurtful to the discussion or the group discussed. If anything, what I did reveal protects the group discussed.
What can you bring?

Tell you what, Anonymous...Daniel Gonzales has done excellent work recently examining James Dobson's deliberate distortions.
One of the researchers has a clip there. His name is Pruett.
You don't have to take my word for it, but see for yourself how Dobson treats members of the scientific community and how he misuses their work.
And eventually misuses, THEM.
Dobson was featured in an important magazing like TIME. That is significant. He passes himself off as this experienced, trustworthy and compassionate soul.
When in reality, he is quite calculating in what he's doing.
I'm trying to understand you, Anonymous. But more and more, I'm getting the impression you're one of those people who can't commit to a definitive moral decision or articulation.
You don't like someone being called an accurate term for their behavior, even if THEY AREN'T HERE.
You're up for scolding on something you are obviously ill equipped to discern, except to judge MY actions, instead of what prompted me to bring it up.
Pointing fingers at ME in particular is something you did before.
And a long thread was dedicated to you complaining about me, and me defending my actions.
You can correct me if I'm wrong, but pass judgement on me regarding how I can analyze a very bad person's behavior is really a WEIRD thing to do.
I'm the easy target, not the right one.
I know your type anonymous. No ability for standards of moral examination or discipline.
Now, you're either very young and naive.
Or very sheltered and naive.
Either way, it's folks like me that don't sit in the middle, we MAKE A MOVE. Even if it's to do research to disprove the Dobson's of the country.
And I know how and where to find information to illuminate the lying.
Instead of bitching at me, why don't you ask me how it's done. What resources you might try.
It didn't occur to you to ask me what uses there are for this information, WITHOUT compromising anyone BUT someone like Dobson.
Dobson, I already know...and other mau maus just like him WORRY about me.
Not because I'm untruthful or inaccurate, but precisely because I'm just the opposite.
But you, Anon, seem like the timid type that can't commit and address the right target.
We don't need a gang that can't shoot straight, dear.
This is a serious fight, life and death...and war of wills and honor.
Dobson and his ilk are EXTREMELY dishonorable and I won't take crap from you to tell me it's not polite to point that out.
I'm not misguided, I have DEAD AIM.
And the GLBT community TRUSTS me, for a long time now.
The real question is, can YOU be to be strong enough and effective enough to knock these liars off their pedestals.
They are a stubborn, mean lot and they hide from Wayne and every other person like him...or me.
They HIDE. That's what cowards do.
I can't believe you're stuck on a name like that.
And took offense and just HAD to point out your disapproval of it's use.
Just like the annoying little kid on the schoolyard who runs and tattles to make himself look good among the big people.
