(Weekly Column)Only one year ago, author Rhonda Byrne's life was a mess. However, all that changed when she discovered a little secret: A sucker is born every minute and people will shell out money if you tell them exactly what they want to hear.
Today, Byrne's life has turned around. She has a number one best selling book, The Secret, which flogs the bizarre notion that if you suppress bad thoughts and place your finger on the "feeling happy" button, life will be a utopia.
"You can think your way to the perfect state of health, the perfect body, the perfect weight and eternal youth," she writes in her loopy tome. "The Secret is the law of attraction. Everything that's coming into your life you are attracting into your life. Imperfect thoughts are the cause of all of humanity's ills, including disease, poverty and unhappiness."
The great irony is that Byrne was correct on the big picture: One can accomplish greatness only by envisioning great things. The author was on the mark, as well, by suggesting that the mind can be trained to tap into a plentiful source of creativity. She was also right to point out that people could improve their health through an optimistic outlook.
Unfortunately, Byrne's book is one of breathtaking irrationality and stunning hubris that largely offsets her more illuminating advice. It is difficult to know whether her impetus to pen the book comes from a metaphysical breakthrough or a nervous breakdown.
For example, she makes the wild claim that through the power of positive thinking she abandoned her reading glasses and restored perfect vision in only three days!
"It is as easy to heal a pimple as a disease," Byrne simplistically jots down. "You cannot catch anything unless you think you can."
Indeed, her attitude towards disease is cruel and appalling. She quotes Bob Proctor, author of "You Were Born Rich," who says, "Disease cannot live in a body that's in a healthy emotional state."
This awful message essentially tells children that if they (or their parents) get sick, they brought it on themselves. Byrne is really suggesting that the thousands of gay men who died of AIDS passed away because they had bad attitudes. She seems not to consider that illness is caused by viruses and bacteria or from unfortunate circumstances. If one is born in Chernobyl, for instance, they have an increased risk of dying of cancer, no matter how steadfastly they push the happy button.
Byrne also crosses the line when she attacks sick people who acknowledge their diseases.
"You are also inviting illness if you are listening to people talking about their illnesses," remarks Byrne. According to this twisted logic, Elizabeth Edwards and Tony Snow are placing the lives of millions of people at risk by discussing their cancer.
Incredibly, Byrne goes on to quote a so-called "teacher" who blames a gay bashing victim for causing his own troubles because he had a negative attitude. I suppose Matthew Shepard's biggest sin was he wasn't happy-go-lucky enough to ward off the thugs that murdered him.
Most outrageous, the author even blames the victims of genocide by claiming they had to be on "the same frequency as the event." Sure, millions of Jews were on the Holocaust frequency and Rwandans were on the "machete me to death" channel.
More benign, but equally bizarre, is Byrne declaration that, "Food cannot cause you to put on weight, unless you think it can." Yeah, right. You can eat a bucket of pork rinds and still look like Naomi Campbell.
Another doozie is when she quotes "wealth specialist" David Schirmer who says, "I would visualize a parking space exactly where I wanted it, and 95 percent of the time it would be there." Why doesn't the clown do something useful like visualize the end of the war in Iraq?
In yet another spin down Ludicrous Lane, the author says, "It is as easy to manifest one dollar as it is $1 million." And, she says, "When you have a pile of bills that you have no idea how you are going to pay, you cannot focus on the bills, because you will continue to attract more bills." Tell that to the "Repo Man."
Feeling old? "Beliefs about aging are all in our mind." (Amazing, how most of us die between 70 and 80.)
The sad Secret is that this best seller is just another slick form of "drink the KOOL-ADE" fundamentalism. The main difference is that God had his name changed to "The Universe." Like the Bible, this book will transform many lives for the better. However, it will also be abused and do grave harm, not to mention line the pockets of a New Age charlatan who is making millions by peddling false miracles.

This philosophy was given to me by a writer friend. And essentially, it is VERY true.
I agree that The Secret is and does do some silly and insensitive editorializing or paraphrasing of this basic philosophy here by Goethe.
But there is a great deal of support that will come your way when you let the people closest to what you want to attain or accomplish, know and see that you are following through with your ambition and have the talent and fortitude to do it.
With or without their help.
Persistance and opportunity will converge, and a new level of success can and will meet at that place as well.
As you see, Goethe knew that. Over a hundred years ago.
And he lived to be a very old men...back in the day when lives were shorter and
attending to your goals was far more urgent.

Anonymous, the Bible is rife with editorializing, exaggeration for the sake of gravitas and written exclusively by MEN to give some framework of order and chronology to their primitive culture.
Let's remember something, giving a story gravitas is still the stock and trade of story tellers and even our culture is guilty of it in these modern times.
Anonymous The Bible is not "The Truth", it is NOT an undisputable fact of life, certainly something to be interpreted as a standard by which to drive politics and social intimidation.
There is much in those tales that are reactive, violently so.
Particularly against men and women who don't meet the strictest criteria of belief that that book dictates.
In real life, we know better and much human progress and social integration wouldn't have happened had the religious maintained constant control of our lives.
The Bible is unrealistic about men and women and gay people and how they are to respond to each other, and certain instincts and characteristics in people.
We weren't talking about the Bible, which itself is suspect because of the change in language, reinterpretation by European males and it's exclusive creation by men.
The Bible is best read as a means to understand how men ordered their ideas around their primitive understanding of their world.
It's a FOUNDATION of where we WERE and how FAR we come as a human race.
There are parts of it that are beautifully written, of course.
But that's true of Shakespeare.
But those who want to maintain a strict course on Biblical directives, ALL tend to be white heterosexual men, who have abused with it before.
Unjustifiably.
No, The Bible is a cautionary tale...or many cautionary tales. It's interpretation and indulgence in what's true within it, has promoted much bloodshed in the world.
Which is why, caution MUST be paid to it's interpretation and the negative effects of that interpretation.
You don't need that to decide how to respond to a thief or murderer.
But for so many people to decide and demand that the Bible is good enough or they learned how to treat gay people badly strictly from the Bible than yes, it's proper to fight the abuse against another group.
It's fair to read the Bible to learn about it's content, why it has so much influence and to respond to it as one might respond to Shakespeare, or Aristotle.
It's information, not fully about LAW.
But there are standards of civil law that should and are very simple.
Treat another human being as you'd want to be treated.
And know exactly how to measure those who violate this, and respond to them accordingly and appropriately.
The most avowed Bible believers are as guilty of violating the basics more than anyone.
Mostly because they don't read the Bible and work proactively, but as they say the Bible teaches...to act out reactively against and perceived offense instead of an actual one.

"The Secret" is just the latest in a long line of spiritual snake oil dating back to antiquity. Byrne might as well claim that eplieptics are possessed by demons. Religious institutions and unscrupulous merchants have been trying to sell people a quick-fix solution for centuries...and humanity has always proven far too gullible for them to ever stop.
Byrne must have imagined millions of fearful, desperate people longing for a magic bullet to take care of all of their problems and give her all their money, because that's exactly what she got. Even Oprah, who never met a guru with a lazy philosophy she didn't want to kiss up to, seems spellbound. If I imagine a world where people take responsibility for their own actions and don't rely on quasi-mystical bullshit to take care of all their problems, will Byrne shut the hell up?

Rhonda Byrne appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show I believe some weeks ago. Oprah seemed to be endorsing the book. I'm very sceptical at best about Byrne's claims and statements. There must be a lot on insecure people out there buying into this nonsense. They believe what they want to believe, you can't stop them.

I went into a "New Age" shop in a fashionable part of London some years ago, and looked at a little kaleidoscope. You know, the kind of thing you had as a child; fragments of coloured plastic in a tube you peer through, with mirrors to turn them into a symmetrical pattern that shifts as you turn the kaleidoscope.
It was quite smart, with a leather-look covering. It was priced at around $70. I imagined burnt-out hippies looking through it and saying "Oh wow man! Shapes! Colours! Great spiritual experience!" And the owners of the shop scurrying along at the end of the day to put the profits from such "New Age" nonsense in an Old Age Bank.

Let's not forget, this is the woman who fully endorsed the guy who made up his own autobiography.
As good as it is to think positively about what you want, it's also necessary to do a reality-check once in a while. Because of this book, people may start thinking that getting tested for HIV means you believe you have it, so it's better to not get tested, ignore any signs and symptoms, and simply believe you're healthy.
And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Though I do sort of admire Ms. Byrne for pulling such a blatant scam and actually getting away with it. It seems that being a con artist is easier than I'd ever imagined.

This book has been instrumental in destroying a 30 year friendship.
She is totally addicted to this stuff and spends every last cent on this media and seminars.
When I told her about another friend of mine dying from complications after a colonoscopy, she had the nerve to say that this poor woman "manifested" her own death thru fear.
No, I'm sorry your friend died. Not a shred of compassion.
She never used to be this way.
This book is way more harmful than anyone can imagine.

Try it and see...it has amazing results whether you believe it or not. Think for a moment...What if you're wrong and the secret is correct? Do you really want to miss out on what life can offer due to your own negativity? I have done it with amazing, amazing, amazing results. Maybe it's time to grow rather than hold onto old beliefs that obviously do not work in this world!

Couldn't agree more. This book was one of the most infuriating pieces of idiocy I've ever read. Given the precarious state of things in the world, it's an especially sad comment that now is when something like this is taking off. "Ignore them and the newspapers will stop printing bad news"! Kind of fitting how Darwin is never mentioned as someone who knew about the Secret...

David Schirmer has refused to respond to everyone who has asked him questions about the money that he owes them for wages, investments and trading including people who did work for him even late 2006. He is a lying greedy cheating bastard who is now going to have to deal with trial by media for his bastardry. Wow, harsh words. I agree with them though. Schirmer should not be permitted to continue in business if he cannot pay staff wages owing, any of his investors who have asked for their money back and any of his suppliers who are owed money which I believe there are a few. The people working for him should be ashamed of themselves for taking pay when Schirmer owes others from years ago - they have to wait why the hell should his current staff get paid first? Oh that's right they must keep up with appearances. Such are the teachings of The Secret. What evil rubbish. If I worked for Schirmer and have not been paid I would take it to ACCC immediately. Why the hell should Schirmer benefit from his lies.

Schirmer can whinge and squeal all he likes about the predicament he is in but it does not change the facts. Blame is so lame and it only makes him look all the more the wanker. He could turn this thing around completely if he decided to sell up his assets, settle everything and then start over. I don't think anyone who has been fleeced by Schirmer gives a toss about him, his family, his business or his future and the only reason for that is because that is the treatment that Schirmer handed out to everyone who believed in them. Today is DDay for David Schirmer and there are a lot of people watching.
This is what the secret IS in my opinion:
a) A massive marketing campaign designed to line the pockets of the teachers NOT help the masses.
b) An evil form of human seduction and emotional manipulation.
Not one of the teachers on The Secret are making REAL changes to humanity despite boasting about making their millions. If they are, wheres the proof?
Where are the Mother Theresa's the ones who are willing to live ample but humble lives and gift their excess successes to the needy? Instead they choose to tell the needy that they created their own problems so get off your butt and fix it up. Try telling that to a small child in Africa with aids. This is the most evil that mankind can be and by the looks of it, the only reason why he talks like this is because he has nothing to give because he has spent it all living a pretentiously wealthy lifestyle. Lets see if he can prove that one wrong today.
We all hope that Schirmers wrongs can be righted and that MUST start today otherwise David Schirmer should be seriously under investigation by everyone not just the authorities. For the Schirmers to continue successfully now is almost impossible according to the laws he feels compelled to egotistically preach when all the evidence shows that he knows bugger all about any of it.

Hear ye Hear ye, David Schirmer is now claiming to be an expert on the Bible. I have some very serious questions for him and I am grossly offended that such an arrogant and dishonest person could be such a fool as to try to justify what he has done by preaching to people about what is right and wrong according to God.
1. Where in the bible does it say Schirmer that it is acceptable to STEAL from other people? Yes that is what you have done, you have chosen and evidently very diliberately, to take from others for yourself. You set up new companies, close companies down, right off the debts, open new companies and siphon the money off for yourself. Interesting concept but not real legal it seems but we'll leave that matter to the law to deal with.
2. Where in the bible Schirmer does it PROMOTE SELF AND SELFISHNESS? You can't help yourself in fact I think you dream about David Schirmer you are such a sad man and yes, we really do feel sorry for you because you are so blinded by your[b]self[/b] and your lies.
3. Where in the bible does it say Schirmer that men who persistently COMMIT ADULTERY are acceptable to God? And where I ask does it say Schirmer that it is ok to have [i][u][b]multiple partners at the same time[/b][/u][/i]? Be careful now some things might come out that you might not want your mommy or your wife to know about. I'm sure this has been a problem in every country you've been in...... How insulting, how insensitive and how outragreously crazy are you?
4. Where in the bible Schirmer does it say that GREED is an acceptable quality of any christian? Why have you taken from people who helped you and refused to return what is theirs? Oh yes, I know a bit more than you might think I do, you have done wrong to a lot of people and all the while lied about your real position. Thank heavens that most of the population are honest and don't follow what you recommend.
5. Where in the bible does it allow you Schirmer to have POWER OVER OTHERS. No matter how powerful you might [b]feel [/b]or how much your ego is enhanced standing on stage and professing such heady knowledge, you are, in the eyes of everyone you have stolen from, a very weak sad individual. In the eyes of God you are no better than the man in the gutter. Rather humbling don't you think?
6. Where in the bible does it allow you Schirmer to FORCE YOUR OPINION ON OTHERS? Why should anyone take your opinion as truth honestly, after what you have done and so publicly too? You have not once proven anything that you have said to be true. You lie, you cheat, you steal and you know it, so why should anyone listen to you, come on?
7. Where in the bible does it allow you Schirmer to PUT OTHERS DOWN because what others think or do is not according to what you believe or think. This is an interesting one Schirmer because you are a very egotistical man, you really do have a problem accepting others opinions particularly of you. Was it you who said other peoples opinions of me are none of my business? Sadly nothing you have said or done tells anyone that you really believe it. If you did you would simply make amends and go on your way.
8. You are NOT a man of God, you are a very evil individual who is being judged very harshly because of your sinful and wickedly deceptive ways. Your interpretation of The Secret is a very dangerous and deceptive attempt to manipulate people into thinking that they need much more than God. You are attempting to set up a cult gathering by having people think you are right and following you by hanging off your words. Thank God they don't hang off your actions because we'd have a very sinful generation indeed. Guess you wouldn't have to explain anything then. Don't you realise that way you responded on the interview on Australian TV where you sucked your lips ever it gave the whole world full view of your egotistical arrogant manner.
David Schirmer would like you to believe that you need his DVD's in order to understand any of this stuff. The truth is that [u][i][b]the BIBLE has all the answers and anything anyone needs concerning your life and the conduct of your life[/b][/i][/u]. David Schirmers interpretation of such things is his alone and what he is doing is attempting to justify all the hurt, solicitation, dishonesty, manipulation, greed, envy, anger, hate, jealousy, stealing, adultery, aggravation, did I mention adultery, that he has caused in his life and [b][i]continues to do now[/i][/b]. He will never know true peace until he finds peace within himself and everyone who has been hurt by him will not forgive until David Schirmer humbles himself enough to admit that he might have got it wrong.
Schirmer if you want to preach, get rid of your worldly posessions and preach, I mean really preach but first, you have to ask for forgiveness and with what is on your conscience I'm not sure even you believe that is posssible.
HUMBLING REALLY ISN'T IT?
This is precisely where DAVID SCHIRMER comes unstuck. He has lied, cheated, defrauded, stolen, gossipped and promoted his own opinion as being the only right one and shunned others for theirs. DAVID SCHIRMER WHEN YOU CAN COME CLEAN ON EVERYONE, PAY EVERYONE BACK LIKE YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO AND HAVE STOPPED ALL OF THE ABOVE YOU MIGHT HAVE A CHANCE OF BEING TAKEN SERIOUSLY. Until then, you Schirmer, are just a little man who will be treated like everyone else because you have chosen to place yourself in the position of God. I have no doubt that THE LAW OF ATTRACTION is at work on your life Schirmer because I think the position you are in right now might not be quite as pleasant as you would like. You choose to take the place of God no matter how much you try to justify it then God will see to it that you get the lessons in life that you must have. Sobering thought isn't it Schirmer!
SCHIRMER, YOU WILL BE JUDGED BY GODS LAW, YOU CANNOT AND WILL NOT ESCAPE THAT NO MATTER HOW YOU TRY TO JUSTIFY YOUR ACTIONS.
