Fundamentalist preacher Jerry Falwell was found unconscious in his office today and rushed to a hospital in Lynchburg, Virginia, but later died, according to various media reports. Falwell made his fortune on the backs of GLBT people. He degraded them and formed the Moral Majority in an effort to ruin America and turn it into a fundamentalist nation. Before he turned his wrath to gay people, he was a staunch opponent of interracial marriage and was pro-segregation. He certainly was a busy man.
Won't the good preacher be shocked when he finds himself at the gates of Hell this morning! Man, I would love to post that video on YouTube. I must go now and mourn, as I can hardly contain my sorrow.
47 Comments:
When I heard about Jerry Falwell's death, I wept -- because he never backed down from his bigotry, because of his family and his wife, because he was a human I met and talked with who is now no more, because any death is a diminishment of the human family. Now, I'm crying even harder after reading about you sipping champagne. My friend, and I ask this not to scold, but to get you to think for a moment: How do you think the creator would react to that kind of callousness?
Wayne, I love you with all my heart. I know the good you do. I know the wrong that Falwell did and preached. I know something else: You're a far better human being than this heartbreaking show of schadenfreude would suggest.

Dry those crocodile tears Davis! How many gays, especially teenagers, would be alive today if it werent for people like this piece of human detritus and his con artist ministry of hate? No, not every death is a diminishment of the human family--think leaders of the Third Reich! Sip champagne? Hell, let's have a keg party!
And as for 'callousness' that piece of shit who just bought the farm has a hell of a lot more to answer for to the Creator than Wayne ever will!

Friends, in the coming days, we will hear an outpouring of phony mourning by many in the GLBT community.
Let's be crystal clear: This is not genuine regret about Falwell's death. Instead, this is all about an unctious show of undeserved "moral superiority."
It is an attempt by some people to say, "look I am better than you, because I am taking the time to feign deep mourning."
There happen to be some of us that think it is dishonest to act as though we are heartbroken over the loss of a man who spent his entire life trying to destroy gay people and African Americans.
Pretending you are filled with sorrow does not make you better - just fake. I prefer to deal in the world of reality with real people who are not so plastic as to cloak their true emotions with elaborate shows of pity and sorrow.
I do feel bad for his family, but my heart is with the thousands of families who were torn apart by this man....And my heart is with the gay youths who commited suicide because they were made to feel inferior by Falwell. We will never hear from these children - as they suffered in silence.
To NR Davis and all the others who will shed crocadile tears - please do us all a favor and stop the charade. Falwell made the world a more dangeroud place for you and me. He even tried to blame us for 9-11. Am I really supposed to be depressed about his passing?
Let's have a moment of candor: NO - his passing will not keep me up at night. Nor, should it.

You know me, Wayne. And you KNOW I am an honest person AND that I am no better than you or anyone else in ANY way. I am genuinely sad, though. And now, hurt. It isn't necessary to club people in the head and mock them because you disagree with them. I can't understand why that concept still seems to elude you. But hey, none of us are perfect and the good stuff you do far outweighs the bully stuff.
Much love.

On second thought...it's quite right that we should be happy that Falwell died, and for a couple of reasons:
First, he's gone and we don't have to hear about (or listen to, if we're so inclined) his nutcase pronouncements about teletubbies and 9/11, or any of that other nonsense he sprouted.
Second, if his beliefs are correct, he's getting his judgment now. I'm not a believer, but this one is making me smile.

To nr davis. When I was young, trying to understand myself and the feelings I had for other boys, I picked up a mailing my step mother had laying around the house from the "Moral Majority". For years I was tortured by what I read about myself.
I knew I was a good person but for years struggled with thoughts that this important man and the many who listened to what he said somehow knew I was evil, wretched, would no less than cause the downfall of my country and likely burn in hill.
I'm sorry, but we all have some cleansing to do today. You do it your way and I'll do it mine. I deserve to.

I am sorry, but I feel nothing but glee at the passing of a man who helped make my childhood and adolescence a time of unspeakable shame, self-loathing, and sorrow. Coming from a fundamentalist xtian family, I was frequently subjected to that man's incessant tirades against people like me. At the age of 11, I wanted to kill myself because I thought I was responsible for AIDS, natural disasters, and any other tragedy he decided to attribute to the mere fact of my existence.
I hope that his passing symbolizes in some small way the passing of the power wielded by the fundamentalist xtian rats who infect this nation.
I am glad he is dead, and I can't wait for the chance to spit on his grave. Hopefully Pat Robertson will soon join the son of a bitch in hell.

My letter to Americans United for Separation of Church and State and the Rev. Barry Lynn (which are really the good guys!)
I'm sorry but I do not share the sentiments of Americans United and the Rev Barry Lynn.
What I do want to share is that DING DONG one of the Witches is Dead!
He, Jerry Fawell, will always be remembered for his misleading information and the spread of Lies, hate and fear about the Gay community to which to this day his cohorts, Robertson and Dobson and those others mentioned, are still following through.
The ex- Gay ministry is closed down, as should the rest of these Religious Right Bigots, and they should be removed from the political system and their Strangle Hold on our political leaders!.
This religious group, the RR, are the people who give Religion a Bad name and feed Atheist ammunition against the rest of us!

Falwell was also a segregationist who supported apartheid and called civil rights, civil wrongs. He was also the douche bag who paid the AK state troopers to lie and say they had procured girls for Clinton when he was governor. He also totally ripped off Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker. When they went bankrupt he took over their enterprises for a song. When questioned about it, he said it didnt matter because Jim Bakker was a homosexual. I know it's 'bad karma', but they should do to falwell what they did to Mussolini. Hang is fat bloated corpse up by the ankles in San Francisco or P-town and let the all the people he crushed under his boot kick and spit on his maggot ridden hulk while it slowly rots in the noon-day sun, crows eat his eyes out and jackals sup on his lard caked intestines.

The social conservatives are particularly virulent these days because they know they are slowly losing the culture wars that they started. On the Randi Rhodes Show yesterday she said (paraphrase) 'that groups of teenagers today look like a mini United Nations. There are white, black and bi-racial kids, gay kids, Asian and Indian, Christian Jewish and Muslim kids. The younger generation is much more tolerent and inclusive. Thank God our generation did something right'.

Compassion and radical inclusion is what Jesus was all about. It beggars the imagination how falwell and his cohorts could have gotten it soooo wrong!!

Gary, the sad thing is that Fallwell and his ilk don't believe they've ever got it wrong. WE are the ones who are in the wrong according to their distorted belief system. They claim they base their beliefs entirely on scripture. I'm not a believer but having read the new testament just once in my life out of curiosity, I didn't ever find Jesus saying anything about homosexuality let alone condemn it as a sin.
Adultery for example is forbidden in scripture, as is divorce, among many other things and polygamy is actually permitted. Yet these are the same bigots who do NOT practice what they claim to believe is written in scripture. How can they use Leviticus against us, yet ignore everything else that pertains to them in the rest of the bible, both old and new testaments? Its nothing but hypocrisy. If the American electorate can't see through that, then we're in deep trouble.

When I was in college I told a professor that I hated Falwell. He tried to correct me and say I hated the things Falwell stood for. I replied back - "No. I hate him and his hatred for others."
I sighed such a relief yesterday when I heard of his death. After thirty years!!! But my stomach tightens up wondering what nut will try to "fill his shoes"

I think it's healthy and good to feel shame over any inclination to dance on anyone's grave. But, I must say, there are few deaths for which I personally am so inclined so strongly. I was in 10th grade when Falwell helped Reagan get elected. Falwell then, and at other points in his career, exerted influence that terrified and terrorized me. I don't think teenagers fully appreciate how much better things are...and how hellish things used to be, thanks in no small part to Jerry Falwell.
I am especially interested to how Mel White (one of my heroes) is reacting.

Dominick, thanks for posting the video by Christopher Hitchens. Though I'm no fan of Hitchens, he offered a great insight into the evil of Fallwell. We need more of that circulating around the net and in mainstream media.
I get most of my information from Air America (AM1600) and I wish there were an equivalent of that on t.v. to counter bigots such as Bill O'Reilly and others. Bill Maher is the closest thing right now, but nothing when compared to some of the programs I listen to on Air America.

Lindenmac, the road to hell is paved with the 'good intentions' of people like falwell (that is, if greed and power are good intentions). The nazi's had good intentions to 'save' europe from the 'international Jewish conspiracy', the kkk had good intentions to 'save white christian society' from every race and religion that wasnt them. The 'christians' had good intentions when they wanted to 'save the heathen indians' by slaughtering them, stealing their land and destroying their cultures and languages. Jihadists have good intentions when they murder and suicide to save islam from 'the infindel.'
When 'good intentions' are primarily self-serving and applied without any REAL moral values or critical thinking skills the result is always the same. Falwell was just another clown in the long march of folly.

I think people should not worry about whether Jerry Falwell went to heaven or hell and just concentrate on their own destination. Nobody can get to heaven without repentance for sin and God's forgiveness. This applies to all people no matter what our sins--and we all have them. He expects us to control our desires that violate his laws, but we can only do that with his help. He loves all people, but hates sin. He desires for all to repent and come to him.

Then, Wayne, you do not know me as well as you think. I am quite sad, one, because a human being (even one who absolutely left the world worse than when he came into it) is dead and two, because he died without finally accepting the equality of his lgbt brothers and sisters and making tangible moves to right the wrongs he committed while alive. To me that is endlessly tragic. And I am sad that Kennedy will likely die in ignorance as well.
A question: Why do you assume that people are lying and insincere? There is no reason I can see for that, and that hurts a lot.
On another subject, you are spot on about Rick Warren. I suspect he will be the, um, anointed one, and more people will die (or wish they were dead) as a result. That's tragic too.
Wishing you love and luck and praying the book is doing well.

Sometime during the mid-1980's, I remember seeing a copy of the Moral Majority's newsletter. It had a picture of a family (Mom, Dad, Brother, and Sis) wearing surgical masks along with a scare headline and story about AIDS. This was to the effect that the Reagan administration had better get off it's duff and quarantine those dreadful AIDS carriers before the whole country became infected.
I don't know how many died (from gay bashings, neglect of the sick, and foot-dragging on AIDS research) because of this vicious propaganda, but I suspect it wasn't zero.
Since I don't believe in hell (except for the kind that some humans create for others on this Earth), I can't consign the good reverend there. But I'm glad he's gone.
Perhaps this is "un-Christian", but it doesn't really matter since I am no longer a Christian. Besides, this is nothing compared to the party I plan to throw when the former Senator Helms bites the dust!

Mr. Falwell certainly may have brought a lot of pain on many people. But I think he tried his best to do good, according to his understanding of things. One can say, "Well, the road to hell is paved with good intentions," but who among us can claim to be perfectly enlightened? We all do our best. Let's try to respect each other, rather than trying to prove each other wrong. And I am speaking to myself as much as to anyone else.
