Dr. Warren Throckmorton has flown to San Francisco to argue that it is healthy for gay people who are tormented by their religious beliefs to remain in abusive relationships with their church counselors. One would have to be deluded or a money grubbing charlatan to actually subscribe to such quack-like notions.
Of course, San Francisco is one of the research capitals of the world. One would think that Warren "Dr. Blog" Throckmorton would use his trip to initiate a real study to back his controversial views. Under his nose are University of California Berkeley, San Francisco State, University of San Francisco and many other universities and medical facilities that could assist him.
But, no, instead of producing, he'd rather protest; he'd rather play culture warrior and demonstrate in front of the annual APA meeting than sit in a sterile lab and demonstrate that his "shame therapy" works. Indeed, I checked up on Throckmorton hoping he was in San Francisco to prove me wrong. What great potential Nobel Prize winning scientific experiment was he working on? Was he penning a groundbreaking tome on the topic of sexual orientation?
"My heart is safe but this beautiful spot on earth has my attention. I am blogging from a little cafe in Sausalito and have had a nice day," Dr. Blog wrote today on his vanity cyber diary.
Well, there you have to folks - Dr. Blog is, well, blogging - surely adding to the body of scientific literature and base of human knowledge.

It's highly notable that no-one among those selling "ex-gay therapy" publishes any primary research.
Most notable, perhaps, in the case of NARTH, which after all calls itself a National Association for Research.

Since Wayne Besen has never written a 'groundbreaking tome on the subject of sexual orientation', it's pretty juvenile of him to complain that Warren Throckmorton hasn't done so either.
And yes I know he did write a work of journalism about ex-gay ministries, but that's not the same thing.

Mr. Besen does not claim to be a scientist or clinician. He would not therefore be expected to publish scientific or clinical papers.
NARTH claims to be a National Association for Research. One might justifiably, therefore, expect the organisation to carry out some research and to publish it. Dr. Throckmorton claims to be a clinician and appears to support unorthodox clinical approaches and to believe in their safety and efficacy. One might therefore expect him to publish some clinical evidence.
Mr. Besen might be called a Journalist, Activist, Polemicist, Writer, Reviewer, Campaigner. In those capacities he has done - and done very well - what might be expected of those roles. He has written and had published two substantial books, the first of which I have read and which is meticulously put together and replete with factual detail. He also of course writes elsewhere, including this Blog.
Peer review of scientific papers is crucial in establishing their weight and worth. But one does not have to be a "peer" to be able to spot, in many cases, junk science or a shoddy paper. I do not have to be a scientist, for example (and I am not), to see that Dr. Elizabeth Moberly's "Homosexuality a New Christian Ethic" does absolutely nothing more that set out a bunch of opinions, that it contains no primary research whatever and precious little reference even to secondary research, and that Dr. moberly appears in it to have caried out no scientific work relevant to the topic she treats.
One does not have to be a scientist to read Dr. Throckmorton's online writings and to observe that there seem to be deficiencies.

Throckmorton is more than a quack. When i was at Grove City College, I believe with 99% certainty - but can not prove - that he helped get me kicked out of that university because I had OCD. The university conveniently found out about things that only my therapist could know . . . also perhaps because I was a heterosexual evangelical openly supporting gay rights, though I doubt he actually knew my political views at the time. Oh, and he deletes practically every post I put on there now. Yes, conversion therapy. Such a loving thing for Christians to do.
