On the day voters head to the Iowa caucuses, I endorse John Edwards for president. I want to make it clear that this is not an endorsement from TruthWinsOut.org - as the group does not take positions on candidates.
Why Edwards?
I was going to go into a long and elaborate defense of his record, but decided against it. The bottom line is that he is the only one who is speaking to the middle class (i.e. me). I am fed up with corporate CEO's who are driving their companies into the dirt and still getting huge pay raises, while the average worker struggles. Conservatives would argue this is the free market, but this is not true. In a free market, people are rewarded for success - not failure. What we have now is a sick system that needs radical change. America is a declining empire that is falling behind the rest of the world. Edwards is the best candidate to reverse this slide.
Let's face it, our children perform poorly on tests. The dollar is falling as fast as the price of gas is rising. We have failed the entire world in dealing with climate change. And, our sadistic health care system is a national disgrace.
Edwards is the only candidate speaking about the plight of many Americans who are fighting to get by. He is the candidate who genuinely wants to make our lives better and is saying the things that I want to hear. This is why I will vote for John Edwards.

Though Dennis Kucinich is the true democrat out of all of them and the one I love, if I have to vote for a dem, it would be Edwards too, though I'm struggling with his phobia on marriage equality.
If Huckabee becomes the nominee, good. Let him polarize the country even more and maybe the democrats will get back to the left and not the center where they are now.

John Edwards is certainly the cleverest of the three leading Democratic presidential candidates. He actively courts labor, criticizes Congress for having socialized medicine when so many have no insurance, and because he’s not in Congress has the luxury of criticizing Obama and Clinton for prowar votes he’d ape if he were there.
If you look at his record most of his populist appeals are new. When he was in the senate he was a right centrist who voted for the oil piracy and to fund it. During his vice presidential run he didn’t oppose the slaughter of Iraqis although by then civilian casualties may have passed 100,000.
His current stand on the war is just as bad. Along with Obama and Clinton, he refuses to commit to a withdrawal before 2013, much less total and immediate withdrawal from teh region. Like them he refuses to endorse the impeachment of Bush, Cheney and the dismissals of top NSA, Pentagon, State, and CIA officials. Such impeachments and dismissals would be the first step towards determining guilt for the over 650,000 murdered Iraqis, mostly civilians and including an appalling number of children.
He refuses to impeach and indict them for the criminal war he voted for, even though virtually every one agrees it's a war to steal oil.
John Edwards is an an expert on the filthy practices of the HMO/Insurance industry because of his legal practice. But he still refuses to support socialized medicine or to call for criminal prosecutions of HMO/Insurance industry leaders for manslaughter. Like all the Democratic presidential candidates he panders to bigots by opposing samesex marriage.

He's a total phony. And what is this "corporations are the enemy" nonsense? What corporations? Microsoft? The Fortune 500? What would he do regarding the high CEO pay that he likes to talk about...forcibly take the decision making process away from shareholders and give it to the government, empowering government to decide how much private corporations can pay their employees now? You've got to be kidding.
As for health care, 85% of all citizens are covered, and the remaining 15% are what's at issue here. Our health care system is excellent, and I know this because people still come here when they get sick. The basic structure is still good. Many of the uninsured 15% have simply chosen not to buy health insurance. I AM ONE OF THEM. I'm perfectly healthy and pay out-of-pocket for any care I receive. I do this with my eyes open. Am I one of the "forgotten" Americans? Of course not. How silly.
And on a final note, government isn't the solution to our lives. WE are responsible for changing our lives, and looking to government isn't the answer and it never has been. Government can do many good things, but ultimately, we must look to ourselves, not government, for a better life. As someone who made his own fortune, Senator Edwards clearly knows that it was his own talent and ingenuity that got him out of being a mill worker, not socialized government.

Chris L. - You don't get it. You are confusing the issues and really - if you want the truth - you sound as if you don't know a damn thing about what you are talking about.
Corporations - Edwards' focus is on how corporations control our government, not necessarily the paychecks of its CEOs (although the rich are getting richer, while the poor gets poorer and the middle class heads into oblivion).
Healthcare - Your number (85% vs. 15%) sound like crap. Give me a source to back that claim up. Until then, I'm calling B.S. There are far more people who are uninsured and it isn't by choice.

Chris L. - That doesn't prove that health coverage and insurance isn't a problem. Thanks for the citation, but I'm still sticking with the point that health insurance is a major issue that needs to be addressed, especially for low-income families.
"Lack of insurance is much more common among people with low incomes. Some 24.4 percent of people with incomes below $25,000 were uninsured in 2005, almost triple the rate of 8.5 percent among people with incomes over $75,000."

Oh I completely agree that we need a safety net for the poorest and most vulnerable among us. I just don't think that government should socialize the entire system in order to do it when 85% are already insured.
What they did in New York and California seems to be the way to go, which involves strong regulatory rules so, for example, an indigent person doesn't die waiting for a liver transplant while some insurance company fails to get its act together. It should be acknowledged, however, that people also die in Canada waiting for their turn under Canada's universal health care system.
As for affordibility, tax credits would go a long way towards bridging the problem for the middle class along with stipends for the poorest. In fact, we MUST take care of the poor. If they are allowed to "fend for themselves", it actually costs government more in emergency room costs and so on. No American should die because they can't afford proper care.

Chris, there are over 47 million people in this country without any access to health care. Bush's message to them is: THERE IS...GO TO AN EMERGENCY ROOM. Who pays for that? 47% is not 15% of almost 300 million people, where did you get that figure from?
Also, NOT everybody comes here for health care. You just can't do that unless you are wealthy enough to pay and even then, you have to go through rigorous bureacracy to get permission to do it. More people from overseas go to the European Union for health care than come here, nobody is turned down and nobody is asked for an insurance card. You just can't come to the US and demand health care as you seem to imply.
Health insurances companies have no right to determine who gets care and who doesn't and no other country allows insurance companies to deliver health care either. Its absurd. Many Health Insurance carriers override a doctor's decision, even after second opinions for things they deem necesssary for their patients care and for which the carriers refuse to cover. How dare they. Another thing, medications are the highest in the U.S. Seniors and others have to buy them from Canada and elsewhere for about half or less than half of the price they are charged in their own country. Its a national disgrace and is further evidence that corporate greed is what is getting in the way to deliver decent, accessible health care for all.
I sincerely hope you never are subjected to catastrophic health care without any coverage. You could lose your home, everything you own to pay for it. You think that's a good system?
All of these scare tactics about socialized medicine and waiting months for procedures is hogwash. That only applies to elective surgery, non-life-threatening conditions. Anyone who requires emergency care in the European Union, Canada or elsewhere gets immediate care. I should know, I've been a recipient of it after a serious car accident in England several years ago. I was rushed to the nearest hospital, stayed approximately three weeks and received excellent care. Plus, the doctors who treated me compiled a file that I could hand to my own physician upon my return. I was also given paid cab fare to my hotel.
The naysayers for universal health care are the usual cabal of republican and democratic political whores who have strong ties to insurance and pharmaceutical companies and the military industrial complex, many of whom fund their campaigns in some form or other.
There is a system already available called medicare, available to all senior citizens. It costs very little to administer, its efficient and delivers decent care for the most part and is a model for universal health care. All it needs is streamlining, refining and open to all at low cost to the taxpayer. Privatize that and see the backlash from seniors.

Chris, I've been on the receiving end of universal health care when I had a car accident in England several years ago. Not only was I taken immediately to a fine hospital where I received immediate care and ended up staying for two weeks, I was also given transportation to my hotel at no cost to me, nor was I asked for an insurance card. After leaving the hospital, the doctors treating me provided me with a file of my stay so I could give this information to my home physician here in the U.S.
As for your comment that people also die in Canada as a result of waiting for a procedure. Understand this....it is only elective surgery where you may wait a few months, non life-threatening situations. People die in our own country because they have absolutely no access to health care of any kind because they can't afford it, or they're employer can't afford to cover them. More people in our own country die from the lack of health care more than any other western nation.
Why should any employer have to provide health insurance anyway? What do insurance companies know about the delivery of health care? Why should an insurance company override a doctor's recommendation, often the right decision? Why should insurance cover only what they see fit as long as they are making a huge profit on other peoples' misery? Why should someone die because their insurance company deems a procedure as experimental, procedures that can sometimes save lives?
Why should seniors have to buy their medications in Canada and elsewhere because they can't afford the abominable prices pharmacies are charging here at home? No other civilised western society has to do any of this.
The reason why so many in power don't want universal health care is that there all political whores with strong financial ties to the pharmaceutical and insurance companies and the military industrial complex. Privatization is not always the solution as we've seen with health care. Universal health care has done an excellent job in the majority of western countries, most of whom believe in strong preventive care and whose infant mortality rates are far lower than ours, among other things.
History judges a society by how it treats it citizenry. Clearly, we've failed abysmally in being the only western country that does not deliver health care to all of its citizens. We've had more than 50 years to do something about it as others have done and we've failed and will continue to fail. Get insurance companies out of the health care industry and you'll see cheaper, more efficient ways in delivering what almost all societies deem as a basic civil and human right, access to health care for all.
Since you do not have coverage, I sincerely hope you do not fall prey to a catastrophic illness where you can face the loss of your home and finances, or become indigent as a result of it. This is the reality that many people face, even people with some semblance of coverage.

I've heard Edwards say that he worked with his father in the mill when he was a boy. This is not an argument over whether or not all people should be covered. I agree with that. The debate her is over how, and I haven't heard any reason why socialized medicine is better than a universal private system accompanied by proper regulation. As for the government, now it's "the people"? I thought Huey Long, errrrr, John Edwards has said that it's been hijacked by special interests and corporations. Which is it?

Yes, John Edwards worked in the mill with his father. His family was a lower-to-middle class one. Edwards was the first in his family to attend college and he did so relying upon scholarships and financial aid. One of the reasons I support Edwards so much is because I know he has been where I have been. He knows what it is like, first hand, for North Carolina families like mine. He's been there. I don't care if he is rich now - I'm glad he was able to work so hard to achieve what he has. Being wealthy doesn't mean you have forgotten your past and the people from which you've come. I don't believe Edwards has forgotten his poor brothers and sisters across the nation.

We can always debate the wisdom of how much any private corporation pays its Wall Street fat cats (some of those stories are obscene), but one thing that people forget is this simple fact: IT IS THEIR MONEY! It is not MY money, YOUR money or the GOVERNMENT'S money, it belongs to THEM. Doesn't that make anyone hesitate even a bit before demanding that government come in, confiscate wealth and redistribute it to those who haven't earned it?

Chris, it is not a question so much about it being their money, who on earth deserves $147 million as a retirement gift while the ordinary man on the street has to struggle to make ends meet and families can't afford to have one bread winner any more. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer no thanks to this regime of greed and corruption and indifference we've had over the past seven years. People are laid off while their bosses reap millions in bonuses and other goodies and retain their high-paying, lucrative jobs. Health insurance CEOs are no different, while 47 million go without any access to health care and a further 59 million underinsured. What happens to the unemployed who can't afford to buy insurance? What do these political whores in Washington think when they say that insurance should be affordable for all? What do you tell the unemployed?This is a national disgrace! We do not do a good job at taking care of our society no thanks to Reaganomics. Its time for we the people to take back our country from the oligarchy that has been entrenched in Washington and elsewhere along with the greed and inherent corruption that has permeated the political process.

Though none of the three democratic frontrunners are far from perfect or ideal, they're a damn sight better than anything currently in or running for office of the president.
Now that Giuliani is really out of it, how on earth can any Log Cabiner vote for the dregs that are left? Not one of them is in support of our equality or any for that matter, among other things. MHC: Most Americans would label Edwards childhood "idyllic"
He was blessed to have such an upbringing. He had 2 parents that obviously cared about him and probably an extended family. A support system that fostered education while his father by his own words had a very good job as a millworker. It was a nice position at that time. Edwards childhood was not some great struggle. Edwards childhood was fantastic so i do not see how he is going to necessarily identify with the poor.
