Chuck Grassley, a Republican hick senator from The Iowa, has insulted New York. He took off his Corn Belt and whipped Giuliani yesterday, while the former New York City mayor was down. The droopy-faced hillbilly said that Giuliani's speedy downfall stemmed from:
"that New York personality, the New York lifestyle hasn't gone over [in] some places. It seemed like the more people got acquainted with him, the less they liked him," he said. "Things you do in New York don't stay in New York."
Well, I've been to the The Iowa five times, and I can tell you that I would take the "New York personality" any day of the week. It is bad enough that the cardboard-like people there talk slow - but the conversation revolves around picking wheat and corn. These people have pigs - as HOUSE PETS.
Not only that, but we have to subsidize the boring Iowa lifestyle with ethanol and other farm subsidies. I'm tired of these people in The Iowa getting farm welfare and then turning around and insulting New Yorkers who are paying for their right to slam us while they sit on top of tractors with weeds sticking out of their mouths.
As a New Yorker, I can say that these cornholes need to get a life and stop bashing us. It was bad enough when they were just boring, but now they are also brazen.
To The Iowa: Stop acting jealous because we know how to have fun and please refrain from talking about places you have no idea about. Just shut up and feed us. With love, of course.
P.S. I am kidding about Iowans....but I am making a point, here. New Yorkers are fed up with getting dissed by country folk who can't stop boasting about their superior values. We are quite content here and we are proud of our own values - diversity, tolerance, humor, innovation. We think that those pointing fingers should take a moment, get to know the real New York and learn a little from us. That's all.

Everytime I read about this type of cultural disagreement I think back to a Daily Show segment where John Stewart talked about dividing up the U.S. states into red and blue countries, with Cleveland as our Berlin. Hilarity!

The "New York lifestyle", eh? I guess that Senator Grassley must be referring to our appreciation for the arts, our noted intellectualism, the finest restaurants in the world, our amazing cutting-edge cultural offerings, our incredible diversity and our entrepreneurial spirit. I think their Ethanol might be going to their head, but when the only thing you can call your own is CORN, I suppose it's only natural to criticize those who truly have it all. Ridiculous.

Fine, but isn't Sen. Grassley the one who's been investigating the financial improprieties and tax abuses of the fundy mega-preachers? It seemed curious to me that he would do that, being a Republican, but if true I'd have to give him points.

Chris, to digress, as a New Yorker myself, I wouldn't say New York City has the finest restaurants in the world, it has some but not to the exclusion of others in Europe, Canada and elsewhere. I've eaten in some of the finer eateries in the city and wasn't overly impressed by most but by one or two, e.g. what passes for Italian in NYC wouldn't necessarily pass muster in Italy. There is really nothing that authentic outside of Italy.

I agree, some of the finest restaurants exist in other places, too. However, we are blessed to have world famous chefs like Daniel Boulud, Danny Meyer and others who have opened here. Italian IS very tricky here, and although I have yet to visit Italy, I can only imagine that nothing comes close to the real thing. :)

I think Mr GRASSley needs to have a gay guy dress him instead of his milkmaid. That tie is way too long, I guess no one ever told him that the point of the tie is supposed to come down to the belt, no longer, no shorter. I heart NY!!! Gary (NJ)

I've had the misfortune of being in Iowa for the last few years, & I don't think their gripe is about art & fine dining! I've been trying to cope with midwest hostility toward we NYers, & these ppl who are all middle-aged drug addicts with criminal histories & started having sex at 13 yrs old RESENT that most of us NYers have not screwed up OUR lives in a similar manner! they go as far as to say manners, morals, concern for family, etc., are "signs of mental illness"! I don't know much about the politicians, but as for Grassley's statement it's true: normal decent people have no place in Iowa!!!

Hey, guys, listen up - - - there is another Iowa out there that you all seem to be missing because of dicks like Senator Grassley. There is a song called Iowa Stubborn from the Music Man, which depicts nicely what Iowans are about. "They will give the shirt off their back if you need help!" but just don't piss them off! Some of the nicest gringos I have ever met have been Iowans!
