The Washington pundits who brought us George W. Bush's presidency and the Iraq fiasco have reached a consensus that John McCain came across as "more presidential" at mega church pastor Rick Warren's faith forum. This conclusion is true if we are still defining "presidential" as a cocksure windbag who bonds with the common people by pandering to the lowest common denominator.

On cue, the media judged the candidates by how fun they'd be at a barbecue. McCain was lauded as a "commanding figure" while Obama was derided for coming across as "professorial." In today's politics, if you demonstrate your I.Q. your career may be through and a candidate can now admit having smoked marijuana, but not that he has experimented with arugula.

In 2000, the media gave Bush an easy ride because he was affable, but have learned nothing after his presidency turned out to be laughable. We watched Bush strut in his flight suit on an aircraft carrier with a gigantic banner claiming "Mission Accomplished." When it was clear that the mission had hardly begun, Bush thumped his chest and challenged the insurgents to "bring it on." Well, they obliged and now thousands of Americans and tens of thousands of Iraqis are dead.

After nearly eight years of alienating the world with cowboy diplomacy, the media portrays Obama's tendency to be humble as a political stumble. Meanwhile, McCain talks tough to the Russians as they continue to rush into Georgia. At the forum, without hesitation he said he is going to defeat evil. But how does he plan to make good on his shallow sound bite with our military tied up in Iraq and our economy on the rocks?

Vladimir Putin has shrugged off the McCain crowd, essentially saying, "You and what army is going to stop us?" McCain must be acting like a galloping stallion because he knows of secret battalions that can be called on to defends the budding democracies in the Caucasus region.

At the forum, McCain also got a big hand by vowing to continue Bush's policy of ensuring that tycoons can live nearly tax free. Such economic policies combined with Republican deregulation have sold out our country and helped fuel the rise of China -- which not only has more gold medals, but owns much of America's gold. Perhaps, McCain remains so bubbly and blissfully unaware of the housing bubble because he has several million-dollar homes. Yet, the media still builds him up as the common man ready to storm the gates, even though he has more in common with Bill Gates.

Of course, the enablers of America's decline are Evangelical Christians who eschew their economic interests in favor of their bizarre moral fetishes. This penchant for the puritanical was exemplified by Warren's voyeuristic question asking each candidate, "What would be the greatest moral failure in your life."

Predictably, this carnival of confession and moral spectacle accomplished nothing and failed to reveal any juicy new "sins" that were not already on public record. Fresh from discussing the implosion of his marriage -- a huge biblical abomination -- McCain spoke out against gay people marrying. In the backdrop of this event was a low level controversy where Jonathan Crutchley, the co-founder of the gay cruising site Man Hunt, gave a $2,300 donation to McCain. This was odd, considering McCain reconfirmed at the forum that he favored Supreme Court judges who had cast votes to outlaw sodomy - the very Man Hunt commodity that had made Crutchley rich.
Horrified, the other Man Hunt co-founder, Larry Basile, pressured Crutchley to resign as chairman of the company. While Crutchly has been reined in, a new Harris Poll shows that Obama has only 68-percent of the GLBT vote.

Sadly, 2008 is looking much like the last two elections, where a compliant media joins forces with chest thumping evangelicals and closeted homosexuals to further degrade America's greatness. If McCain is inaugurated, we will all be invited to the barbecue on his million-dollar Arizona ranch, blissfully unaware that our future is the roasting pig with a rotten apple sticking out of its bloated mouth.

Of course, the further we sink into irrelevancy, the more faith forums we will see - even as the rest of the world loses faith in our ability to lead the world. While Rick Warren is an improvement over Focus on the Family's James Dobson, he must teach evangelicals there is a better way than the selfishness of modern conservatism, or it will go down as his biggest moral failure.

55 Comments:

LOL! Wow - there are words for this type of column: fury and desperation.

Why? In a forum where the two presidential candidates were asked the exact same questions, McCain shined and Obama stunk. And it's now obvious why Obama refused McCain's offer of joint town hall appearances during the fall campaign. McCain is obviously better at them. To be fair, Obama can deliver one hell of a prepared speech from a teleprompter.

Quotable Quote:

"Obama is one of those rare political figures who seems to grow smaller the closer we approach him...

McCain's performance at the Warren forum helps change the political psychology going into the conventions. Republicans have spent the past few weeks pleasantly surprised at the closeness of the presidential race. But they have generally chalked this up to Obama's weakness, not McCain's strength. After Saturday night, even Republicans most skeptical of McCain must conclude: 'Perhaps we aren't doomed after all.'

Of such small hopes are large upsets made."

As a conservative christian I cannot even tell you my stand against having politicians in a church setting, sponsored by a church with a pastor there!!

Politics DO NOT BELONG in the church. Nor do church activites belong in politics.

As I see it, during Jesus' time - it was a very political time. And he stayed out of it.

Yes, Wayne - that is a carnival! I am disgusted that this happened.

I fear the men who are running for office and those who are leading the churches.

Actually Rick Warren should be commended. His questions were simple, yet probing. He was fair to both candidates, didn't go for the typical "gotcha" questions (in fact, he asked both candidates the exact same questions), and didn't pull any punches.

And asking the same questions to each candidate was a great idea. It allowed Americans to see McCain and Obama giving revealingly different answers to the same question.

The reason Democrats are so furious is because Obama didn't do well at all. He didn't have a prepared speech, his didn't have a teleprompter, and he clearly doesn't like to answer questions.

Just look at what happened when Obama was asked about abortion and same-sex marriage. He declared his complete support for the Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion on demand. When asked a very relevant and logical question concerning human rights - "at what point does a baby get human rights?" - Obama said that the question "is above my pay grade."

"Above my pay grade?" Well, that was a particularly evasive answer, and millions of Americans knew right there that this guy is a waffler. The President of the United States must frame policies that are predicated on some assumption of when a human being, born or unborn, deserves the full protection of the law.

And on same-sex marriage, Obama attempted to define marriage as the union of a man and a woman, but he made clear that he would actively oppose any constitutional amendment designed to protect that definition, and he gave full support to civil unions. He suggested that the matter should be left to the states, but he has opposed Proposition 8 on the California ballot - a citizen-initiated referendum that would define marriage as a heterosexual union.

Confused? You should be. I don't think you'll see Obama away from the teleprompter any time soon.

"[T]he media portrays Obama's tendency to be humble as a political stumble."

But he doesn't come across as humble Wayne, and it has nothing to do with media portrayal. Obama comes across as weak. Very weak.

And it's because Obama is drawing the wrong contrast. He shouldn't be humble where McCain is arrogant, or modest where McCain is cocky. This only leads to Obama looking weak.

On foreign policy and defense matters Obama needs to be arrogant and cocky, but smart. Be arrogant and cocky and offer better plans and proposals. Tell Americans how he will utilize American power and strength abroad wisely, AND STRONGLY.
posted by Anonymous Anonymous, at 8/20/2008 8:52 AM

There's more than a little evidence that McCain heard/got the questions ahead of time so had time to think about his response. Obama never should have lowered himself to debate in a religious venue; before bush shreded the Constitution there was supposed to be 'no test of religion'. And if you think Obama cant function without a telepromtor, wait until the debates!

John McCain did so much better in a recent forum than Barack Obama that his supporters are looking for whatever excuses they can find for the profound differences in the candidates ability to think on their feet. Obama's people know he didn't do well and are now looking for an excuse.

You see, they just "know" that McCain must have cheated or surely he couldn't have performed so well while their guy stammered and stuttered and bloviated his way through the interview.

Let's keep in mind that McCain has asked Obama to debate him on numerous occasions in town hall style forums and Obama has demurred each time. He is obviously not in a hurry to meet McCain one on one. That in itself is an interesting fact for someone who is aspiring to be President of the United States. But then, when one is in a debate that person has to listen to someone's voice other than his own. He also can't just read a speech.

Anyone who has heard McCain in his blogger conferences or in his frequent town hall meetings know that what we saw of McCain in the Saddleback Civil Forum is typical of how he conducts himself in those situations. While Democrats may be accustomed to every question being answered as though its an exercise in academic dissertation, most Americans simply don't talk like that. Most are not so much in love with the sound of their own voice and are fully aware that other people might have something of value to add to a conversation.

McCain is direct, straightforward and concise. He thinks quickly on his feet and is well versed on the issues. He doesn't hem and haw and pause to think through every permeation of every question and answer and how every possible person might interpret it before he answers.

The bottom line? Obama didn't do so well when he didn't have a script in front of him. That is McCain's forte. McCain did better in that forum. Get over it.

yes it is him again.

We get it. You could not be more thrilled with McCain. He beacon of moral rightiousness condeming gays and abortion. Which is why you are here. I would be a bit wary of the idea that he is anxious to fuse church and state like you are. There is much in his background to suggest otherwise.

Some quotes:

"No, I'm calling you a f*cking jerk." --to fellow Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley, when Grassley asked "Are you calling me stupid?"

"Only an a**hole would put together a budget like this ... I wouldn't call you an a**hole unless you really were an a**hole." --to Budget Committee Chairman and fellow Repulican Sen. Pete Domenici, during a Senate budget hearing

"There's no doubt in my mind that we will prevail and there's no doubt in my mind, once these people are gone, that we will be welcomed as liberators." --on the Iraq war, "Hardball" interview, March 24, 2003

"At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you c*nt." -to his wife, Cindy, after she playfully twirled his hair and said "You're getting a little thin up there,"

"Do you know why Chelsea Clinton is so ugly? Because Janet Reno is her father." --at a 1998 Republican fundraiser

"Did you hear the one about the woman who is attacked on the street by a gorilla, beaten senseless, raped repeatedly and left to die? When she finally regains consciousness and tries to speak, her doctor leans over to hear her sigh contently and to feebly ask, 'Where is that marvelous ape?'" --a joke McCain reportedly told during his first Senate race in 1986

RUSSERT: Do you believe that Jerry Falwell is still an agent of intolerance?

MCCAIN: No, I don’t. I think that Jerry Falwell can explain to you his views on this program when you have him on.

Back in 2000, when McCain was asked whether he stood by his description of Falwell, he said, “I must not and will not retract anything that I said in that speech at Virginia Beach. It was carefully crafted, it was carefully thought out.” (Hardball, 3/1/00)

McCain said initially:

Neither party should be defined by pandering to the outer reaches of American politics and the agents of intolerance, whether they be Louis Farrakhan or Al Sharpton on the left, or Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwell on the right.

What changed with Falwell? nothing. McCain will say anything to get elected.

Even a top reporter at CNN (I forget her name) who is noted for her objectivity drew the conclusion that McSame COULD have gotten the questions ahead of time, to the howls of protest from the McSame camp (a little too much protesting---like you do when you get caught). I dont think mcsame is so good on his feet, his speeches are dottering, uninspirational, filled with inacurracies (lies!) and flipflops, and have almost as many malapropisms as bush's do.

Let us not forget that, no matter how nicely packaged is Warren's public persona, he advocates the very same values as the right-wing evangelical nutjobs that have taken our country to the point of ruin. As well, there is nothing new in his widely publicized book. Victor Frankl's Man Search for Meaning is a classic that deals much better with values and life meaning.

Jamesinsf,

Yeah Warren wrote the dumbed down version.

Why oh why is a pastor holding a political "conventon" in his church?

Everyone is talking about the event without talking about the obvious. What are politicians doing in church discussing anything other than God. This is - in my opinion - very wrong.

Hey read what I wrote. I did not say they did not have a right.

What I am implying - for those who have low reading comprehension skills, is that this writer does not approve of mixing politics and religion. Especially when the pastor may be using this as a gimmick to have more people attend his church. The message of Warren's religion just sank due to his actions of having politicians in his church in this way.

Jerome Corsi has written a heavily footnoted book that assembles thousands of facts on the personality and character of Barack Obama - you know, what his supporters say is of primary importance.

Corsi's book is basically a critique of Obama's own first book, "Dreams From My Father." It finds hole after hole in the narrative. Dates don't add up. Stories don't square with reality. You get the picture.

Obama wants to run from this radical past. But his first memoir is a peek into his soul. "Dreams" has become more of a nightmare, and he may just come to regret ever writing it.

And Obama's fierce attack on Corsi's book has completely backfired. Obama’s been forced to confirm things he'd hoped would stay buried.

Yeah, Obama's looking worse everyday. If he falls behind by more than 5 points in the polls before Denver, I think Hillary will (and should!) stage an insurrection that may be successful.

Hillary is crazy not to challenge Obama if he continues to plummet (Obama has lost 12 points in a month). Aside from the mindless Obamanations, Democrats are much closer than most observers realize to hitting the panic button, as they know perfectly well that, given President Bush's MANY failures and the low-popularity of Republicans, McCain shouldn't be anywhere near the Democratic candidate in this pro-Democrat electoral environment.

If Obama blows his VP choice, which would not surprise me given the strategic missteps he's made since becoming the candidate, Democratic elders will have no option but to draft Hillary Clinton, who is all too willing to be drafted. And she can win!

At this point, I think Obama would be best off choosing Clinton to forestall a revival of her candidacy, but don't be too surprised if he does something totally insane like choosing Tom Daschle as his running mate.

And Obama's sliding even though the mainstream media's basically campaigning for him.

A comprehensive analysis of every evening news report by the NBC, ABC and CBS television networks on Barack Obama since he came to national prominence concludes coverage of the Illinois senator has "bordered on giddy celebration of a political 'rock star' rather than objective newsgathering."

The new study by the Media Research Center reveals that positive stories about Obama over that time outnumbered negative stories 7-1, and significant controversies such as Obama's relationship with a convicted Chicago man have been largely ignored. The networks downplayed or ignored major Obama gaffes and scandals. Obama's relationship with convicted influence peddler Tony Rezko was the subject of only two reports and mentioned in just 15 other stories.

The list could go on and on...
posted by Anonymous Anonymous, at 8/21/2008 11:30 AM

Anonymous, positive stories about Obama outnumber negative stories by 7 to 1 because there are 7 times as many positive stories about him as there are negative stories. Only a fool would think that objective reporting means the number of positive stories has to equal the number of negative stories.

Republicans are fundamentally dishonest. You can see that in their anonymous postings here. Rather than using a pseudonym so people can associate all their posts with one person they post anonymously so they don't have to be consistent from one post to the next - its a form of lying.

Whereas liberals place fairness and equality as their highest values conservatives place in-group loyalty as their highest value. To conservatives equality and fairness are secondary concerns, they'll happily give special rights to those they consider their own while oppressing those they define as "the other". Liberals believe gays deserve the same marriage and employment rights as heterosexuals, conservatives consider gays to be less than human. Only Liberals truly believe "all are created equal".

Priya Lynn,

Sorry but I have heard and read a lot off liberals (I am liberal by the way) who are not fair and equal. What they are fair and equal about are people for people who view things as they do. Not others.

And - You've got to be kidding me - that counting the number of articles/reporting in the media about a person (good vs. bad) as a gauge for anything is naive.

Please, do not lump all librals into the same category, nor raise the media to a level of the righteousness gauge.

Well, can if you want - I was just trying to open your eyes to the idea that the media may be tainted in the home of the free and the brave.

Someone in college must have told you that liberal america was honest. (Put enough money, passion, and intensity into an idea and you will ALWAYS have those who are dishonest)

As a person, you sound like someone who has a lot of integrity. But you also sound young and inexperienced. As a liberal, I wish I could believe that all lierals were honest and had integrity. That jus is not the situation.

You are probably referring to Richard Elliott Friedman's "Commentary On the Torah," specifically; his interpretation of Genesis 18. I doubt very much that his text would be considered politically infiltrated, since his pure mission was simply to write a commentary on the Torah - something many Jewish scholars have done. It's a traditional endeavor. In ADDITION, Jews are arguers. We argue over meanings of every jot and tittle in the Torah, b/c every word is special, right down to the last "yud." His commentary is not the end all be all of Torah interpretation. He writes things I disagree with. But he never fails to make his case. Here is a Google Books link to it: http://tiny.cc/F1YSs
