They shouldn't have put an ad in a Utah paper. They could have had just as big of an impact if they put it somewhere else, if not a bigger impact without undermining the Utah boycott.

I like the fact that they went to enemy turf. The right are always butting in on our territory, and it's time we grew a pair and did the same to them. Plus, the Utah paper is probably a lot cheaper than the Times. Good job.

Wayne, some comment I read at Queerty blogsite suggested sending the ad to HRC and all the other equality orgnanizations. Maybe they'll help cough up some of the expenses to helf defray the overheads to run and ad in the NY Times. I'm sure Neil Giuliano of GLAAD would be interested to see it.

The ad didn't violate the Utah boycott because Salt Lake Tribune is a progressive paper. If it ran in the conservative Desert News, that might be an issue, but for the money, this is an excellent placement with great strategic value.

I think I'm starting to absorb all the cynicism toward the mainstream organizations, because even though I think this ad is well within the bounds of civility, I feel like HRC and GLAAD would shy away from it because it (gasp) dares to criticize people who happen to be religious. And remember, we want to look as polite and innocuous as we can for the fundies so they come to like us someday (big smiles everyone!).
On a related note, I heard the Freedom From Religion Foundation wanted to get in on the legal action against Prop 8 and they were told they were "undesirable" and were denied.
I listen to FFRF's radio podcast every week and give money to them. They have NEVER hesitated to defend gay rights. But No on 8 would rather parade around gay-positive (but no less batshit crazy) religious leaders. Look everyone, god-worshipers who don't hate us! See? See? Jesus loves us! Praise Yahweh.
People are still afraid to criticize religion, still afraid to offend (crazy) people (even when those people are unreasonably offended by nothing more than objective reality), and if one thing changes in the wake of Prop 8, for Yawheh's sake I hope this is it.

I fully agree with Eshto. LGBT 'leaders' need to stop placating and holding the hand of religions that are irrational to begin with. We will never win if we wait for the delusional people to accept us.
Though I'm no lover of religious cults (all religions are cults in my opinion), we also can't afford to alienate the good ones such as the United Church of Christ, the Metropolitan Community Church and others of "faith" who support us. We have to be careful not to paint all of them with the same brush even though many of us don't subscribe to any of their belief systems such as myself. I've no objection to what people choose to believe in, but the minute they start agitating and supporting hate legislation, then the've crossed the line. They deserve incessant bashing. Why aren't we seeing more support for the removal of their tax-exempt status for starters as well as the prohibition of religious ministers running for political office such as Ruben Diaz of the Bronx and Mike Huckabee, isnt' that a conflict between the separation of church and state?
