Gov. Jim Douglas said Wednesday he will veto a gay-marriage proposal if it passes the Legislature, the first time he has signaled such an intent before final legislative action on a bill.

Speaking at an afternoon news conference, the Republican governor said that he thought Vermont's first-in-the-nation civil unions law, passed in 2000, provided sufficient rights to same-sex couples and that he believed "marriage should remain between a man and woman."

"For those reasons and because I believe that by removing any uncertainty about my position we can move more quickly beyond this debate, I am announcing that I intend to veto this legislation when it reaches my desk," he proclaimed.

Yet another moral coward in politics, afraid to do what is right, ethical and just.

I hope they have enough votes to override the jerk's veto. Typical republican.

I have had it with this legislation-that-gets-passed-only-to-be-vetoed shit! If the fundies don't manage to get it voted down, some fundie asshat vetoes it. We need to get this done through the courts. The fundies will always find a way to prevent marriage equality.

If I remember properly, it took the courts to do it in Canada. The fundies didn't like it but there is very little that they can do about it. It's about time to make the xtians and other fundies realise that they do not own this country!

Unacceptable and discriminatory. Show him the door.

I don't think that this republican bastard is afraid to do the right thing. I think he thinks he IS doing the right thing. How despicable. An override would be magical. If not we wait until a new governor comes in. Guys, listen, calm down. It's only a matter of time. Even after the CA Supreme Court upholds Prop. 8, that piece of garbage has its days numbered.

Chris, I am so tired of waiting for straights to "do the right thing". I am tired of chickenshit politicians and the fundies they kowtow to. How long are we supposed to wait for a human right?! I went to Canada, but I want to see the day that my spouse can inherit from me without fear that relatives may just come in and take it all. How long are we supposed to wait to have a right which heterosexuals who marry simply take for granted? This is not something which should even be voted on. If blacks had waited to have their rights lesgislated or voted into law, they'd still be waiting in many states. Thankfully they had the Supremes on their side.

Open the floodgates. There must be at least one or two gay state employees who can file a lawsuit against their homophobic boss. I would suspect it is and has been a very difficult employment atmosphere for these gay employees to be forced to tolerate such conditions when the head honcho is so openly discriminatory against their very being.

Its about time our people went after these bigots who veto our rights away. Lets push to keep religious beliefs out of the political system altogether if there is truly separation of church and state. Religion has NO place in politics or the public arena. I don't give a damn what people believe in, they should just keep their "lifestyle" cultist beliefs in their homes where it belongs. Nobody forces them to believe, they deliberately choose to. Why should we be subject to any of it? Its beyond arrogance.

Meanwhile, on a happier note, Sweden yesterday voted overwhelmingly to allow gay couples to marry effective May 1, 2009. Way to go Sweden. You can bet Denmark will be next.

What a disgrace for the U.S. Only two states allowing it and only then at the state level. We're so damned backward.
