A Cafeteria Catholic's Conscience of Convenience

(Rick Santorum: Your gay relationship will wreck his marriage)

Rick Santorum, R-Pa., likes to portray himself as the Senate's premier advocate for family values and a staunch defender of orthodox Catholic doctrine. However, a cover story on the sanctimonious senator in this weekend's New York Times magazine revealed that he is a mere cafeteria Catholic with a conscience of convenience.

For example, Pope John Paul II was very clear in his opposition to the Iraq war calling it a "defeat for humanity". Apparently, the Pope's protests fell on deaf ears as Santorum vigorously beat the drums of war for the Bush Administration. He justified his support by repeating the lie in Crisis Magazine that, "No one can ignore...mounting evidence of his [Saddam Hussein's] cooperation with terrorists."
Santorum's enthusiasm for the death penalty also runs afoul of the Vatican's position supporting a "culture of life."

Of course, playing God is a Santorum specialty, as was so evident in the Terri Schiavo case. The Times article makes it clear that Santorum was the driving force behind this unprecedented federal intrusion.

"I said to the leader: 'We're not leaving here until we pass this'...Let the folks know we'll be here for a long time."

Not surprisingly, Santorum parasitically parachuted into Florida to capitalize on the media frenzy. Between praying with Schiavo's parents and preening for the press, Santorum reportedly attended self-serving political fundraisers.

This type of insensitive and invasive behavior can be expected from a Senator who believes there is no right to privacy, including birth control, and that the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling overturning sodomy laws will lead to "man on dog" sex.

The senator's obsession with homosexuality is, in fact, weird. In the Times article he was asked if gay marriage threatened his own marriage. "Yes, absolutely," he answered without explaining how this would occur.

Based on the facts, this is an odd conclusion. The Boston Globe editorialized last week "U.S. Census figures show that Massachusetts has the lowest divorce rate in the country -- boasting more family stability than any of the 18 states that have adopted constitutional bans on gay marriage."

Santorum's ire is piqued, not only at those he deems morally compromised, but those who he views as insufficiently Catholic. In the Times article, the reporter writes that Santorum said that, in a political sense, President John F. Kennedy shed his Catholicism when he became president by supporting separation of church and state.

This is an interesting observation from a man who turns his back on one of Rome's most cherished values - fighting poverty. Santorum, of course puts on a good show. He visits poor neighborhoods, acts concerned and gives speeches at black and Hispanic churches. But a glance at Santorum's record reveals he is no Robin Hood, but a self-righteous hood whose policies are robbing the poor.

Santorum is a co-sponsor of extending Bush's tax cuts, which have already caused the deficit to explode - leaving precious little money for anti-poverty programs. The Senator is also a champion of Social Security privatization, which could drain another $2 trillion out of the treasury.

"When you have a budget crunch, everything gets squeezed," he said explaining why the poor get the shaft. "I respect that. You just have to scrap and claw for whatever little money you believe you can get for programs you believe are important."

So, Santorum asks the poor to scrap and claw, while he offers tax cuts so the wealthiest Americans can eat caviar and tan at the spa.

Most telling, Santorum fought against raising the minimum wage to $7.25, although this would directly help the economically disadvantaged. It is amazing that the senator believes working people can get by on $5.15 an hour, considering in the Times, he complained that on his $162,100 Senate salary he was living from "paycheck to paycheck."

It seems the only time Santorum truly offers charity is when it is faith-based and appears to flagrantly violate the Separation of Church and State. He enthusiastically supports sending $10 million of taxpayer's money to a Philadelphia charity run by Rev. Herb Lusk, that serves soup only if you hear Scripture.

"And there will always be someone at that [free] lunch giving their testimony about their relationship with the Lord," bragged Lusk. "That's the way we do it."

Fortunately, a statewide poll in April showed that Santorum is down 18 points to his pro-life Democratic challenger Robert Casey Jr.

"How is it possible, I wonder, to believe in the existence of God yet refuse to express outrage when His moral code is flouted?" Santorum once asked during a speech at the conservative Heritage Association.

That's a good question, Senator, which you will be in a much better position to answer when your public record matches your very public beliefs.

His cuteness,which I think is up for debate, is keeping you from having rights-especially if voters use that as the reason to give him a vote. People with your attitude don't care about rights though, I guess. I hope that you are not gay. If so, maybe your could consider sexual orientation conversion by one of our great religious bigot groups. I think you would be happier living in the shadows.
